They're 30-year old plants that haven't been properly maintained / upgraded?

"The local Midi Libre newspaper, on its web site, said an oven exploded at the plant, killing one person and seriously injuring another. No radiation leak was reported, the report said, adding that no quarantine or evacuation orders were issued for neighboring towns."

This is international news because...?

So... - you are applauding this event as you are against nuclear power -you admit that wind, solar, and sea are not currently feasible (economically speaking) -you give no other alternatives Is this assessment of your assertions accurate?

And this is why I can't trust the media. Title: "Explosion at nuclear plant!" Later in the article: "It was just an oven at the plant, not the plant's nuclear material processing machinery."

It's not complex... this is not a part of nuclear power generation in a reactor. This is an oven that's used to melt waste as part of France's reprocessing regime... a really obsolete one by the way (read about PUREX), that can be compared to smelting any metal to seperate impurities. In this case it's not so much about "skimming" off the top to remove impurties, as it is about seperating the different actinides (metals involved). @Foxhound_fox: It's hard to report on things that the reporter has ZERO understanding of.

Yeah... you'd think at some point people would grasp the difference between a controlled nuclear reaction and a bomb, but somehow "nuclear" just seems to conjure images of mushroom-clouds in people's heads. I mean, Fukishima was a disaster, but it's going to harm far fewer people in total over time, than burning coal does a fraction of a year. This also ignores radical advances such as Gen IV intiatives such as Pebble-Bed reactors.

Apart from the loss of life it's quite a good result considering how this story appeared on news sites 10-11 hours ago simply with explosion at nuclear plant in France and everyone assuming the worst. No earthquake, tsunami, terrorist attack or radiation spill - looks like they got it all contained

I wouldn't go that far; there has to have been serious contamination in the vicinity of the ovens, and maybe beyond. It's great that the engineering met standards to prevent a release, but this is an OLD process that shouldn't be leading to explosions, fatalities, or contamination within the plant. The French really do tend toward the risky/cheap methods of dealing with nuclear fuel though, including a really huge FBR. They're very concerned with the economics of obtaining fuel, and these extra steps... especially fast breeding and related reactors, and reprocessing using thermal means is inherently risky given Gen III/III+/IV initiative thinking.
