"This is theft, clear and simple. It's smash and grab, no different than a guy walking down Fifth Avenue and smashing the window at Tiffany's and reaching in and grabbing what's in the window."Joe Biden

Not this bollocks again. You'd expect better from government officials, but good lord, apparently not.

I've nothing against governments cracking down on piracy, but c'mon, there's better arguments on why you should crack-down on piracy than this falsehood.

To be honest, I have no idea why I still have that expectation. :P

If people can copy it why would they buy it? The industry gave the commercial users the equipment to copy software. What did they think they were going to do with it?

I hate when people say "piracy is stealing", because it's not. Even within the law it's not defined as the same thing. A pirate could make a copy of some file, and provided he wouldn't have paid money for it, and doesn't redistribute it to anyone who would have either, the corporation doesn't actually lose anything. I'm not trying to say that makes it morally acceptable, though, just that there is a distinct difference. I'm all for a crackdown on piracy but so far there has been no method of prevention that doesn't in some shape or form screw over all the people who actually purchase the content legally, which I completely don't agree with being used.

It's irritating how even government officials represent a complicated problem like it's the most one sided issue in the world. Besides Biden being factually incorrect (he should be attacked for expressing falsehoods), he also implies copyright infringement is a one sided issue. If the government really wants to do something about it, look at the problem from different sides, and have a proper discussion about it. Just going the zero tolerance route won't work in any way. This was clearly only done to keep their campaign financiers happy.

I don't mind the effort to crack down on pirates. I do mind DRM on everything...that would piss me off to no end.

[QUOTE="clyde46"]Motion picture piracy costs the U.S. economy more than $20 billion annuallyGallion-Beast
Right because anyone willing to watch a movie for free would obviously pay full price for the DVD otherwise.

This... I don't see how pirating hurts the economy because the majority of pirates pirate because they can't afford to buy $20 DVDs or pay the $8.50 to see a movie. Taking away their ability to pirate will not make money magically appear in their pockets. Besides as much as the film and music industry profits you could venture to compare the people who do actually pay for all of there movies and music to sexual assault victims...

I don't see a problem with this, but I do have a problem with making it illegal to back up the property I legally own (such as breaking the encryption on a DVD).

This seeems like a immensely costly idea that will A) shrink the rights I have to what I can do with my property.. and B) infringe on my privacy.. Thigns like music and games arn't supposed to be shared.. And if you actually read the ToS and EULA its a terms violation.. If it were actually enforced it would really suck.

[QUOTE="gameguy6700"][QUOTE="clyde46"]

I just found this.

June 23 (Bloomberg) -- The Obama administration will try to shut down Internet trafficking in pirated movies and music, the government's first anti-piracy chief told Congress.

"We will go after the foreign-based websites and Web services that infringe our intellectual property rights," said Victoria Espinel, the U.S. intellectual property enforcement officer, in testimony today to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Espinel told Senator Patrick Leahy, the Vermont Democrat who leads the committee, she would cooperate as he develops legislation that he didn't detail to close illicit websites. She delivered a report yesterday proposing a 120-day review of government enforcement of laws protecting intellectual property and the need for new rules.

Motion picture piracy costs the U.S. economy more than $20 billion annually, Barry Meyer, chief executive officer of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., a unit of Time Warner Inc., said in written testimony. There were more than 1.7 million illicit downloads of the movie "Sherlock Holmes" in the first 30 days after its December release, Meyer wrote.

"Rampant theft of intellectual property strikes at the heart of our nation's economy," Meyer said.

Senator Thomas Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, said China isn't cooperating in quelling trade in counterfeit goods.

"They are stealing our intellectual property," Coburn said. "They are stealing our future."

Espinel, whose post was created by a 2008 law, said China is "an issue of great concern."

It is so aggravating that we still have politicians spouting that crap when an official government investigation into piracy found that not only are the entertainment industry's claims of damages from piracy "baseless" and "greatly exaggerated" but that the US economy actually probably benefits from piracy.

Once again, the fact they are going after countries oversea's worries me greatly.

Really though, piracy of US IP on US soil doesn't hurt our overall economy at all. They wouldn't have a banner to raise if they didn't go after the "foreign devils."

this is the industries views on it. you dont own it even though you paid for it, you only paid for the rights to use it for personal use and nothing else. they own the content still you only own the physical medium its contained on along with the permission to use it but only in ways they approve of.the law is written in their favor specifically allowing them to enforce the above beliefs of theirs.

Yep basically the case.. Your paying for the license and perimssion to use that license.. Outside of taht you really don't own a copy. Its quite lame, though form a business stand point I can understand why they do it..

I don't tend to put much weight behind any Joe Biden quote. That guy just runs his mouth and has really no idea what he's saying. He's an embarassment to this country and Obama should drop him fast for next election.

this thread seems to be inviting people to get moderations...

Not really, piracy is wrong but this way of fighting it is also wrong.

I disagree. 3ds-Max costs $3,500 but people in foreign countries are getting it for bargain-basement prices. That is piracy.

Some of those foriegncountries do not enforce copy write laws.. They are immune from any kind of criminal charges.

Well there goes the youth vote, well I hope

There is also the ACTA treaty that will be the the internets version of the Patriot act to fight piracy.

They would have better effect on piracy if they didn't have ticket prices at 10+ dollars a show (then add in 3D cost...)
