Okay, he actually didn't say his administration, he said "Washington", but technically his administration is part of Washington. Also technically his administration has focused on things other than the economy, some of which I had to do (i.e. national security, the war on terror).

But in other times it seems fair to say that the Administration did focus on other things like healthcare (though perhaps that could be economy related), the temporary moratorium on oil drilling after the BP oil spill (I guess you could argue that spills damage the economy, but you could also say the moratorium damaged the economy because people who worked on the rigs were out of work and oil companies lost revenue), the HHS mandate and other things.

I think he was talking about Congress, but he said Washington, and his Administration is part of Washington. Besides who is he to criticize Congress for not focusing on the economy, when just a week ago he was talking about race and the Zimmerman trial?

yup, he is going from place to place giving roughly the same speech each time. Literally yesterday he said congress has taken it's eye off the ball. So you know, boring story being used by journalists trying to stir the sh!t when their is no sh!t to begin with.

Wasting taxpayer money traveling the country to give speeches that most Americans probably won't listen to. Did he say "congress", I thought he said "Washington".

eating, drinking, showering, bathing, flushing White House toilets, washing his hands. So long as he doesn't do these things excessively. Protecting national security, going after criminals, supporting disaster recovery (e.g. Hurricane Irene).

But you yourself said he is "going from place to place giving roughly the same speech each time", which sounds like a waste of money, why not just give one speech from the White House?

I suppose the argument would be that if you are going to engage a public that has waning interest in all things politics, due to the election having been over for some time, you will need more than a one time speech that most people won't end up watching. But you know that's just off the top of my head.

Maybe. Oh I would like to amend my previous statement, washing his hands is a waste of taxpayer money, but flushing the toilet isn't.

At lest he admits it. As much as I like Obama, he has been far to obsessed with the Trayvon case, guns, immigration, and foreign affairs.

Yet people give presidents far too much credit or blame for the economy when their policies effect doesn't show until well beyond their 8 year limit.

Has Obama actually started eyeing the economy? I don't remember him actually performing actions that were meant to improve the economy. He's done things to hide the mess the economy is in, like more handouts, but I don't remember him doing anything that will actually improve the economy.

So he's just supposed to ignore the fact that there was a massive oil spill and instead save the money that was spent on the issue saving the economy?

this idea that the economy is the end-all-be-all of the us. while i agree there should be more focus, it's not the only metric for measuring washington's effectiveness ( or lack thereof )

You can hamper the economy that's quite apparent immediately. Yes, good policies may take a while, but that's not what Obama is doing. And, the President is rarely ever the only problem.

So? Either he knows what he's doing or he doesn't. And if he doesn't then that's what the advisors are for. If he still proceeds with damaging policies, that is what I call him. Sure, it's for the shock value, and nothing else.

One of the very first things he signed was an economic stimulus package meant to slow the free fall that was occurring at the time.

Damage control was already done by passing Tarp. Obama's stimulus did little to stop the "economic collapse" after it.

[QUOTE="mattbbpl"][QUOTE="ferrari2001"]Has Obama actually started eyeing the economy? I don't remember him actually performing actions that were meant to improve the economy. He's done things to hide the mess the economy is in, like more handouts, but I don't remember him doing anything that will actually improve the economy. DevilMightCry
One of the very first things he signed was an economic stimulus package meant to slow the free fall that was occurring at the time.

Damage control was already done by passing Tarp. Obama's stimulus did little to stop the "economic collapse" after it.

Regardless of whether you agree with it or not, I was responding to the comment, "I don't remember him actually performing actions that were meant to improve the economy."

If that's not your cup of tea, his administration also implemented a tax cut and saw through a round of deficit reduction measures, both of which are generally Republican proposals to spur economic growth.

There's nothing that he can do about the economy besides more deficit spending. The current political climate in the U.S. demands debt reduction, ergo deficit spending cannot be pulled off. The fact that his previous round of stimulus prevented the U.S.A. from falling deeper into recession or even a depression obviously cannot be used to convince the House or Senate to pass more of them. Look at this thread, 90% of Americans have no idea what he did or why it worked because they know nothing about macroeconomics.

the majority of economists disagree........but whatever the credibility of this thread was made apparent with it's inaccurate why should I expect the people in it to be making decent arguments?

I don't buy the "economists agree" line being thrown by this administration. Fact of the matter is, a Republican President is going to say "economists agree" with mhis policies, while a Democrat President will say "economists agree" with his policies. The era of honest unbiased information is gone. Bush passed the first and most dramatic bill stabilizing the economy which pretty much everyone agrees was necessary, yet Obama takes credit for his Stimulus that was passed after he became President by mostly Democrats if not all. Which was loaded with congress spending the usual pork on each district for votes and so they can say "hey I've done something to help the economy" while damaging us long term, with short term solutions. They really are kicking the can down the road. I know it's cliche, but business as usual in Washington.
