Off-topic forum contests - storming your brains!

Just a heads up that I moved the Valentine's Day lyrics contest to the competitions forum for archiving purposes. If you missed out on checking to see who won head on over there for the results.

While I am at it, did you all like this kind of activity? If so, do you have any ideas for others worth considering?

Off-topic forum contests are more difficult to consider because we are a media game website. However, if you can think of non-gaming activities feel free to let me know.

Cookie or something visual to show what you think the general feeling about a certain day and explain why/how it shows that feeling O_O..that would be interesting..and people would really have to think about the picture and the meaning behind it..

Might cause some problems though..but eh...:(

a sig competion would be good

I liked it, but I have a feeling that not as many participated as expected. Not sure why, maybe some people thought they wouldn't be good at writing lyrics. I enjoyed making mine though. It would be cool to see simular activities in the future.

By the way, Jody, were you judge #2? Just a guess :)

I didn't mean to seem like the people who won didn't deserve it. Just commenting on the Off Topic Voters replies.

How about a traditional writing competition? Over at the Writers Lounge, there are contests like that all the time. A little while ago, there was a poetry competition (in which I didn't participate, but... well, you know).

I would absolutely LOVE to see a script-writing competition. Done in actual script style; full-length, original or based on existing work (fiction or otherwise). But I'm probably the only screenwriting afficianado on all of GS, and most certainly the only one who would actually want to enter.

Another idea, which would be similar to to the OT Valentine contest, is that we pick an already existing song which best describes a different topic every week; ourselves, OT, a political situation, a war situation, etc, The rest of the participants would then judge each song.

Of course, there could be just a vague "create something which describes you" and doesn't say what to do. A picture, a song, lyrics, a story, poetry whatever the individual participants choose.

That's a good idea.

That actually used to happen a long time ago, when users would use some website to create multiple choice questions about OT to test just how well you know OT.

BiancaDK: If it was themed around OT posters you all might have to host the trivias. :) So, might still be something to consider. I would just need you all to send me little WHOIS facts for the most frequent of OT posters. For an example, any of you recall bluesnews.com? Stephen used to have this nifty little background of who was in the game industry from customer level designers, professional gamers, developers, and much more.

xTheExploited: Costume design contests aren't bad. Bethany held one in her blog when she worked here. Might be something for a game forum or we could do it centered around a celebrity once a month. Hmm, might be fun. You know, pose like a celebrity or dress up like one.

_IronManDude_: Poetry contest might be interesting. Some people who did the lyrics contest were pretty good at poem style writing. Now, if it was a script writing contest as in a scenario to follow. Have some of you piece work it together such as record sound .wav files and then you could make a slide show of the story or something. Sounds like a lot of work though. As for the lyrics about politics/religious topics you are starting to scare me. *hides under desk*

I am actually planning a type of contest in the general games discussion forum over the next week. The idea is to grab pieces of retail box art and have the gamespot users guess what game it is. Maybe we could do this for DVDs/BlueRay covers, a clip of a celebrities face like their eyes only, lips only, nose and a hint, films in the theatre posters, or CD covers?

Why not have an actual debate contest? Pick a topic, then people can present their sides of the arguments. Let it run its course for a while, and then have people vote on who they thought the best debater in that thread was. JustPlainLucas

I like this idea better actually! That way you all have a chance to check into people's habits and such. Define your personality type (category based on a list, probably), favorite cookie, favorite car, favorite discussion threads, etc. Then I'll create a trivia once a month or something. This sounds like a winner already.

You could have a drawing contest (several GS posters are quite good artists) or a writing contest (well writtenuserreviews, articles, etc.).

You know I would love to see a short story contest. I belong to a short story site that gives you a sentence (or a "prompt") and you have to writea story around that line. I think something like this could be fun for the whole community.

Well I for one would be all for a sig competition or some sort of art competition using photoshop/GIMP.

I don't think drawing or art or sig is a good choice because not every poster can do it easily. You want to be able to have a contest where all users can enter without a clear disadvantage. I like the idea of writing or user submitted trivia because at least then everyone starts at the same level.

Yes but sig and drawing take obvious talent. I wouldn't enter either. But I think at least 90% would enter writing, especially if we had to write around one "prompt" and then everyone would be on the same field.
