how is rap a genre? rap is a form of singing? hip-hop is a genre... you can have instrumental hip-hop. you could rap in rock music if you wanted.

You don't have to say it, you would've looked like a complete ass and been completely disregarded if you thought it sucked and never took time out to actually listen to a few songs and learn about the genre. I wouldn't go making threads like "death metal sucks", because I know next to nothing about it. The same way I don't say any music sucks I have no clue about.

Generalizing entire genres of music is never good. If one does that then one tends to give the impression one doesn't know what they are talking about. And there is no way that talent doesn't vary in genres. What do you listen to then? I'm sure there are bad artists in said genre....but you'd argue against someone saying the entire genre sucks since there is some talent to be found.[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"][QUOTE="Sajedene"]And Faith Hill isn't Johnny Cash...though both are country. I'm not familiar with the genre's of country music but with rock, we have punk rock, hard rock, power rock, alternative, etc. AND YET, they all fall under ROCK. Its the same thing with this, we have hip hop, rap, gangsta rap, hi-fi (or however you spell it) and even r&b. I'm not even going to go into the pop category.
Rap and Hip Hop .
You are providing me Wikipedia links to the method and the culture.
How about this list - from the link you provided me. Yes, all under the hip hop culture BUT different genre's of music.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hip_hop_genres
You just proved his point, basically.
Hip hop is a whole stile and culture. Rap falls under the category of "Hip Hop Music". Then, there are sub genres of rap. Gangsta rap, bubble gum rap, christian rap, hardcore rap, bounce music, crunk, miami bass, etc.
Some rappers don't even know this though. On C-Murders song "Y'all heard of Me", he raps: "I spit that gangsta rap, forget that hip hop".

thats a lot of what rap is about though. It stems from rap battles. Look at a rapper like Big Daddy Kane as an example of this.. or even KRS One.. MC's Act like they don't know, Ain't No Half Steppin', etc.

Then you must have no rythm. There is no music like rap that makes you just want to move to the beat no matter what you are doing. I mean, I like rock music, it sounds good and all.. but there is no music like rap where you hear a new , really tight beat that makes you want to move.

sorry most of my music if from one label so i miss a lot of rap, but i just searched a few lyrics in "big girl" by nas where he talks about seducing a girl, the roots "clones", the second verse is all about how there better rappers than "super star nwords".
i think my point still stands, but all that music that i just listend to was great.

How in the hell do you have hip-hop without rap?
This is what is confusing about the genre. Hip hop is the name of the culture and is also a genre of the culture. Rap is the action as to how most of (but not all of) the music is typically performed but then again is also a genre within that culture. Kenye raps but does not fall under Gangsta rap. Pharcyde raps and sings but are more under the hip hop genre. Nelly raps and is under the Southern Rap. Then we have Souja boy and god knows where he falls under but its not gangsta and its not hip hop.
Teh ignorance is strong with this one.
regardless of what category it falls under rap isnt MUSIC...they dotn sing or play an instrument....atleast in MOST cases..ArmoredAshes
so all techno, dance, and house music isn't music either, and about 50% of rock where they add "non-music" in isn't actually music
regardless of what category it falls under rap isnt MUSIC...they dotn sing or play an instrument....atleast in MOST cases..ArmoredAshes
Who cares if they sing? There doesn't need to be a "singer" for a song to be music. Beethoven never sung. His songs never had a singer. The producer or DJ is the one that plays the instrument. Ever seen rappers perform on jay leno or a late night show? They have a band with them... yes, playing their song.
You are really ignorant if you think rap is not music.

i agreee.. and i hate how someone will send a video or song out of 1000000 that doesnt have lyrics like that.Dont even try to discuss this , its a fact.
Rappers sing about how they shot one man down, how they got rich , how they are working out theyre bicep to impress ladies, how they roll with theyre cars, how off the hook theyre lyrics are , how thuggish they feel like , how much woman they banged in last decade, what chains and whats theyre worth theyre wearing , how they miss theyre girlfriends and at the same time saying they would bang them in all different holes , how they would or could smash some other guy in two pieces ( never seen rappers actually getting in a serious fight , all we see is bullets and guns )
How can rap be called culture? its a paradox . They dont make songs - its more of a thuggish myspace profile texts theyre trying to rap about .

Really?
Just because its all you hear on the radio doesn't mean thats all there is to it.
Theres alot more rap thats not about the gansta life style than you seem to think. You just dont hear about it because its not what most people who listen to rap feel like hearing. They want to hear what they can relate too and sadly that is the gansta life style.
Though I do agree that its a low standard of music, I have respect for it as art.
