Ok the 60's, 70's, and 80's all had distinct cultures. What set the 90's apart?

The 90s in the US will be known for:
  • The introduction of anime (DragonBall Z anyone?)
helium_flash

I'd say more along the lines of "mainstream episodic anime." A lot of Hayao Miyazaki's (and other's) films were released in NA during the '80's and were quite popular.

Late 80s. Rap was quite popular by the time the 90s started.

If you're a japanophile, maybe. I wouldn't say the popularization of anime in the US was a defining point of the 90s. :?

Dragonball Z was quite a popular show during the '90's... with japanophiles and others. Heck, most japanophiles probably would rather have watched the un-localised version of DBZ over that one we got on YTV. ;)

DBZ was the main point of introduction of mainstream episodic anime into western culture, and it happened during the '90's. Whether or not it is "defining" is opinion. :P

I'd say it's something our culture should bury and forget about.

The rise of "Grunge" and the more modern forms of the alternative genre, and the popularization of rap.

Well, I'd say its rise was in the mid 80, around 85ish. However, yeah, it started quite before then.

50s- the stereotypical American Family, you just tell when something is form the 50s

60's-hippies, marijuana, own style of music, different fashion style etc.

70's- disco, more distinct music, Star Wars, afros, different fashion style etc.

80s-chessy music, mullets, parachute pants, tie-die colors, another diff. fashion style etc.

Different forms of Rock and Roll prominent through 60s-80s.

90s?

90's is different from everything else. You can't compare the 90's with anything else, therefor, it's different. Also, the difference about the 90's and 00's is the fear of terrorism.
