First Look At Mark Wahlberg As Max Payne

Shooting has just started of the film adaptation of Max Payne, and a first look at the movie's main character is now available. As usual we are not too excited about the film, as every recent game to film translation has left us sick to our very stomachs, but with some people of quality partaking in the project it has a chance of impressing.

Mark Wahlberg will take the roll of Max Payne, and although he does not look much like the character I am sure we could have been stuck with much worse. Better news comes from the fact that John Moore will be directing. He did not do that bad with his effort in Behind Enemy Lines - although Flight of the Phoenix was less impressive. There is a bit more bad news though, as recent reports hint that the film is trying to achieve PG-13 rating, and we just can't see Max's character been portrayed correctly under the confines of that rating.

It is currently unknown if the movie with keep the heavy film noir and slow-motion scenes of the game intact, or if it will instead adopt it's own approach. However, it is not scheduled to be released until sometime in 2009 so we still have loads of time to find out, and then complain if necessary

No no. It can't be PG-13. For it to be Max Payne, there must be sex and lots of violence :D

Well, since Fox is going to be the studio to put this out, I'm not suprised. Look at what happened when they dumbed down the last Die Hard film to a PG-13 rating...it wound up putting more people in the theater seats. (and also cranked out the worst installment in the series, but that's just my opinion.) They're more concerned with making money then putting out a film that's actually good. But then again, it IS a video game film, so I don't have much faith in it being good to begin with.

So the games are for 17+ plus but the movie is 13+?

Something seems wrong here >_>

They should just eleminate the entire PG-13 rating. All it does is produce bad movies that could have been three times better if they just didn't have to aim for that teenager audiance.

Does it really need to be R rated? I don't remember much more than lost of violence in the orginal Max Pain, nothing that couldn't be pulled of in a PG-13 movie.

Hmm...wasn't there also a lot of swearing in that game? And no, a PG-13 movie cannot have tons of people being shot up all bloody like. Die Hard 4 was shot with bloodless squibs because they tried to get a PG-13 rating.

Well, the swearing would have to be reduced, and it probably would have to take the Die Hard route. Seriously,if they did it to Die Hard, than they might as well do it for Max Payne. I wasn't ever expecting anything other than crap, anyway. It's just poor judgement to expect anything more than that from a video game based movie.

What confuses me is that many people and critics complained that live free or die hard was dumbed down violence wise, yet when Rambo comes out and has tons of great old style violence they say its too violent:? WTF make up your damn minds!

oh dang its the end o' the world i guess ill go kill muself .... jesus people, its not so bad, die hard 4 still had good action, and as long as the story remains intact (which i doubt, it is a video game based movie after all) i dont really mind if a little blood and cursing is lost in the proccess, look at the lord of the rings movies, those movies were pg-13 and had excellently brutal action scenes

The latest Die Hard wasn't that bad. And we got Mark Walhberg. I can see how this can go wrong, but atleast this has a chance for success unlike an Uwe Boll movie.

I'm more concerned about Wahlberg playing Max than I am the PG-13 rating. Yeah, we'll be missing some swearing, and a bit of the violence (though the game was pretty tame in that regard), but that dude is so not Max.

we just can't see Max's character been portrayed correctly under the confines of that rating.

HiResDes
Exactly. I never played the second Max Payne for Ps2, but the first one was dark and disturbing--not to the level of, say, Condemned, but not anything you'd want the kiddies to watch. They can't replicate the atmosphere of the game unless they step it up to the R level of violence, fear, and gore.

It could work, in a sort of The Transporter fashion. Since it is a game -> movie port, I'm dubious, though.
