[QUOTE="Vyse_The_Daring"]Hanging nooses on a tree deserves a murder trial more than kicking someone while they are unconcious, which has killed plenty of people in the past? CrimzonTide
I exagerated, the noose obviously does not deserve a murder trial. But neither do the six, if they were attempting murder, the kid would have been dead. They used no weapons. Hanging a noose is sympbolic of a period that needs to be buried, though it probably never will.

Actually, I don't think information about the era of lynchings should be buried. It would be like trying to suppress knowledge of the holocaust. Things like that need to be remembered so we don't repeat them. I think it is not well-enough known by people today. George Santayana said "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". We don't want to repeat it.

Its funny how this is being construed as a civil rights struggle by some people. I wonder what Martin Luther King jr. would have thought about a 6 on 1 fight...Jocubus

I don't know, but Gil Scott Heron might have said "The revolution will not be televised".

You said "blacks are disproportionally convicted of everything else". What? Committing crimes? They are disporportionally convicted of actual crimes they commit? Get it together man.

And, if I was black I'd like to think I wouldn't be a criminal going around beating people up!

FPSGunnerDude
They're disproportionally convicted the same way you said whites are disproportionally convicted of hate crimes. When they're convicted of murder they're more likely to get the death penalty than white people who commit the same crime. They're more likely to be pulled over by the police. Etc. If you don't think that the justice system in it's current state is at least a little biased against black people then you're just kidding yourself. And I'm just going to ignore the last sentence because it's irrelevant.

OK so one party hung some nooses around the tree and one of the members in said group yelled racist remarks. Really nothing illegal there. The nooses maybe vandalism?

Now, the other party beat one person up. That's assault. So now I don't see where the racist stuff stems from if one party commited vandalism and the other assault.

I have not been paying attention to the situation so I am just going by what you said.

No, hate crime laws are specific laws to give whites who harm blacks or gays more time in prison. It's unjustness like we as young people have never seen but are seeing now.

I agree blacks may get harsher sentences sometimes. It's possible. But, they are also much more likely to commit crimes and much more likely to be 3 strike offenders and therby have earned them.

Justice is definitly not always fair and trumped up charges are unjust even in the OJ robbery case.

More news is coming out. Bell had allready had his conviction overturned. And the others were currently facing reduced charges at this time of 2nd degree battery. And 4 of the 5 were adults at the time.

So, actually they may all walk or maybe would have anyway.

You have to realize, colored folk getting their full rights in this country is still very recent. There are people in this country who have lived through the days of inequality. Do you think their offspring are going to forget so easily what their grandparents went through? The same can be said about anti-semitism in this country. Can you blame a Jew for claiming anti-semitism, when their own grandparents were alive during the holocaust. What about those who were alive during the apartheid in South Africa? The chinese for their views on Japan?

Let me be clear though, what these 6 boys did, was not right. It can not be condoned. It should not be tolerated. However, I also think a failure to fully understand the entire situation in context is just as bad as well. In other words, we should ask ourselves "why did these 6 black boys feel threatened enough to react violently"?

The thing is though, I don't think many well-off white folk will be able to understand such a situation, as I can not recall in the past 200+ years where they, as a group, have been targeted or made to feel threatened at such a level (as the holocaust, apartheid, etc). The closest event they have faced is probably 9/11, and just look at the reaction that caused.

While you may not agree with my analogies, I hope you still understand what I am trying to say at some level. We as men and women, have to not only condone violence to the fullest, but must also condemn the roots of violence equaly. Learn to not kick the dog, so that he does not bite. Not tease the lion, so he does not attack. For provocation, can sometimes be just as bad as retaliation.

I only hope, that Al Sharpton and his crew do just the same. Instead of holding the one-sided mindset.

Y'know, call me insensitive, but I'm having a really hard time giving a crap about this story...

I mean, people driving to Jenna from California to help protest? What the hell? This doesn't seem like that big a deal to me...

Another interesting point is that Bell had a black lawyer who called no witnesses and blacks were summoned for jury duty and none showed up.

Anothor somewhat humorous fact is that the rally was scheduled to be held at Bell's sentencing. But, theconviction was thrown out a week ago, and everyone showed up anyway. LOL
