You have to realize, colored folk getting their full rights in this country is still very recent. There are people in this country who have lived through the days of inequality. Do you think their offspring are going to forget so easily what their grandparents went through? The same can be said about anti-semitism in this country. Can you blame a Jew for claiming anti-semitism, when their own grandparents were alive during the holocaust. What about those who were alive during the apartheid in South Africa? The chinese for their views on Japan?
Let me be clear though, what these 6 boys did, was not right. It can not be condoned. It should not be tolerated. However, I also think a failure to fully understand the entire situation in context is just as bad as well. In other words, we should ask ourselves "why did these 6 black boys feel threatened enough to react violently"?
The thing is though, I don't think many well-off white folk will be able to understand such a situation, as I can not recall in the past 200+ years where they, as a group, have been targeted or made to feel threatened at such a level (as the holocaust, apartheid, etc). The closest event they have faced is probably 9/11, and just look at the reaction that caused.
While you may not agree with my analogies, I hope you still understand what I am trying to say at some level. We as men and women, have to not only condone violence to the fullest, but must also condemn the roots of violence equaly. Learn to not kick the dog, so that he does not bite. Not tease the lion, so he does not attack. For provocation, can sometimes be just as bad as retaliation.
I only hope, that Al Sharpton and his crew do just the same. Instead of holding the one-sided mindset.
