Too much money would be lost if smoking was banned.Big_Bad_Sadthis is true

Nah I don't think it should be. I don't smoke, nor do I ever plan to but tobacco's pretty big to the economy, lots of tax dollars, lots of jobs. If people want to smoke even though it could easily kill them why not let them be?
So long as the toxins in cigarette's don't affect non-smokers, there's not problem.SetsaAgreed... It is a slippery slope 'we' tread -starts with smoking, then drinking, then eating certain foods, then driving certain vehicles...you can't just start taking away everything that is dangerous...we choose to live in the US for a reason
I dont see the problem unless you are implying that he will make everyone not smoke except for himself. :?[QUOTE="Snipes_2"]He's trying to ban something he himself partakes in? That's not Irony?Teenaged
He is not banning it to scold the US citizens for smoking, but to (at least typically) create healthier conditions (in public places I assume).
If Obama decided to light up a cigarette inside the White House, who's going to tell him not to?:P

i agree....ish. i hate smoke. hate the smell of it. its a disgusting turn off to the human race. i realize youre trying to push your straight edge agenda with you single track ideals. but youre not everyone else. if you really want to push something push for cleaner cars. and cleaner homes. your house creates a larger carbon footprint than a car. maybe we should ban homes. if you dont have to breath it. stop caring. smoking in your own home is fine. the cloud of cancer will not effect you if you are responsible enough to clean your AC filters in your own home.
let them do whatever they want. so long as you dont have to breathe it its fine. except litter. i effing hate littering.
[QUOTE="Gambler_3"]False analogy. We need cars for daily life. Nobody needs cigarettes.I do not own a car, why do I have to suffer with all the harmful gases that cars emit? CARS SHOULD BE BANNED!!!!!
hamstergeddon
An incorrect analogy maybe, but a relevant point. Why not look at placing congestion charges on cars in all major cities, combined with a minimum 1-passenger rule for inner city driving. That would boost the economy and reduce pollution.
The issue though is the toxins that are pumped into the air by cars in an inner city area far far far outweigh the contribution from cigarettes, which people put a disproportionate weighting on. I remember reading some 10 years how by merely living by certain main roads in the UK the intake of toxins was equivocal to 20 cigarettes. This 'you smoke I choke' mentality is beyond me.

Yeah and its a shame people think a cancer stick in your mouth draining your heart is cool. I am not trying too, EVERYONE has to breath it . its not just about me or you protecting ourself , its about millions of others like the rents who smoke in font of their children. If Im correct in MA smoking is illegal in public places.Nonstop-MadnessSame here. It works out OK, I guess (it's really just a minor inconvenience to smokers). But a ban in public places is far different from a ban altogether. I don't see the latter ever coming to fruition (which is good, IMO).

I wouldn't smoke in front of anyone's children, but I happily puff away to my (drained) hearts content on the streets and within the privacy of my own garden. Nothing for you to worry about.

Thats for sure. I think that iss what makes everyone different. How about BAN nudity in PRIVATE HOME? Seriously, this is another reason Obama needs to get a life and stop being a dictator.magicalclickI would hardly call Obama a dictator at this point, but I don't think you need to worry anyway. So far he's shown himself to be pretty spineless. Unless he starts to show some better leadership, I don't think he'll be capable of passing anything earth-shattering. And I think it would be near impossible for a GREAT president to pass a total ban on smoking in this political environment. I just don't see it happening.

Oh the horror. Next time we will see people getting arrested while they are having sex because apparently someone saw them with a binocular. :( *Quick google search* nope not there yetI dont think this can be compared to the prohibition. EVERYONE drank in the 1920s, it was a social activity. Not as many people smoke, and since they aren't allowed to smoke in public anyways... Also alcohol can be made at home with basic ingredients unlike cigarettes. Plus its so expensive now, wait until the factories close. Frenzyd109
20%-25% of Americans smoke cigarettes. That's a HUGE amount of people. Trust me, cigarette factories won't be closing any time soon.

GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULLS- SMOKING ISN'T JUST A PERSONAL CHOICE WHEN IT'S EFFECTING THOSE AROUND YOU!!!!!
In the description of the video. This statement bothers me. Second hand smoke is one the most blown out of proportion situation ever. People act like if they get a little bit of smoke in there face, they are going to die from cancer and its just **** ridiculous.
One more point, i think its stupid to want to ban everything you don't like. I don't like listening to hip hop but people around me sing or play hip hop so technically it does affect me but i'm not going to cry about itor try to ban it.
And you have to see this. I think it describes you perfectly.
Oh sorry i didn't see your post don't be angry please :) haha I totally agreed , but some won't listen or even care cause 89% of smokers are selfish and careless about others. wow you switching it all around , music don't cause cancer? its not killing people , SMOKING IS! i discovered skinny pants and it was the best day of my life. im sorry i just dont buy the peer pressure thing. everyone one of my friends is a smoker and a stoner. my older brother smokes like a chimney. but i have the mental capacity to say no. thats not an issue of smoking thats a self confidence issue. smoking is a small part of the air we breathe. and i mean very very small. i dont know if youve ever been to LA. but landing a plane in that city is like decending into a fog of toxic sludge. cigarettes are the least of my worries when im in those places. there are far more important problems than cigarettes.
everytime you exhale you are pumping toxins into the atmosphere. we should really require all humans to wear CO2 scrubbers when in public.

yes i wanted you to see the linkI can see the problem with smokers smoking in front of their kids all day but i'm just tired of people think one puff of smoke in their face will get them cancer. I will admit the music analogy was pretty stupid but the whole point i was trying to make is that some people need to smoke to relax from their day. Its the only thing keeping them sane and i think its messed up to try to take that away from them. Also i think its lame to try to ban everything you don't like. There is this thing called tolerance.
btw i never knew 89% of smokers were selfish. Where did you get that fact?

Well, that's a bit personal. But, the NASA thing is rather WTF. I mean, NASA is one of the major sciense department of USA. It is there to make sure we are still strong in science. And this is not helping the economy when more jobs are lost. :(
I KNOW RIGHT! I was talking to a NASA worker and the marshall spaceflight center. and he informed me that 20,000 contract workers will lose their jobs because of this. aparently hittin up old luna isnt all that important.

I really don't know how he can reform by taking science occupations away. Well, in your case, you can always get a job oversea. This is obviously scary because US always relies on the best of the best from out of states. And if there is no job to even keep you in state, US is no longer retains that American Dream. On a side note, 1) who is Chris Crocker and 2) does anyone have anything besides this guy's hearsay that any kind of ban is so much as being contemplated? I assume not since a ban would likely wreak all kinds of havok, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

 Yeah. Okay. Smoking is fine with me, myself being a smoker. And now, I'm not selfish. I don't smoke in public places, only my home. Therefore, I am not "spreading wind of cancer" if thats what you call it.
Sure you are spreading it still. Where do you think 48 percent of the smoke go? you think it disappears in your house?Yes wind of cancer cause the smoke pollutes the air.
I hope you never use a car as transportation in your life. And if you do, you deserve a punch in the mouth.wow i just actually watch the video. if i had known it was chris crocker......i would have gone as far as supporting mandatory smoking in elementary schools. christ i hate that guy.....
While banning tobacco use is a noble goal and all that, I don't think it will work in the end. Look at our attempts to ban alcohol consumption in the early 20th century, now imagine it ten times worse.
People who want to smoke will still find ways to get their fix, our prison population will skyrocket with nonviolent smokers (and this isn't counting dealers, gangsters, etc that crop up as well), and it would probably spawn the largest criminal empire in history.
Of course this is just a worst case scenario.
