[QUOTE="Mousetaches"]I know for a fact I meet all of the requirements except maybe the running because I am anemic, but only slightly, so I still manage to function at most tasks, but I've passed out every time I've gotten my blood taken thanks to it.thegerg

How are you anemic to the point of imparing physical activity and causing you to pass out after blood draw but still "meet all of the requirements"? Something tells me that you wouldn't make it through medical.

I can run a 6:30 mile, do 80 pushups, 120+ sit ups, but i've never run two miles consecutively, so i don't know if i would make it due to my anemia, but i'm fit. and i haven't ever passed out from physical exertion, just from blood being drawn.

Your opinion differs from mine. Anyway, if not enough joined the military willingly we would just reinstate the draft to fill in the holes. Be glad enough people want to join so you don't have to worry about being drafted, whether you agree with the military or not.

Also, the benefits don't hurt either. I have almost $80,000 to use for college either for myself, my wife or my daughter, for example.

I was hoping this would stay on subject instead of turning into some anti-military post with people saying why they think serving is immoral.

Haha. Do you think there were not political motivations behind conflicts before the Korean War?You certainly can't be so dense.

Also, how much oil is currently being exported from/produced by Afghanistan? The assertion that the war in Afghanistan is a "blood for oil" conflict is freaking ridiculous.

Read about the pipeline.

I'm fairly certain I'd be in the 25%. I'm both healthy and educated. At worst I'd have to work out and build up more muscle as I'm on the leaner side of the spectrum.

Care to do a cost benefit analysis on that? The cost of the war well outweighs the cost foreign cooperation for the benefits of an oil pipeline would have.

I've read about the pipeline. How does that, in any waym support your assertion that the war in Afghanistan is a "blood for oil" campaign?

Also, please answer the other question. Do you think there were not political motivations behind conflicts before the Korean War?

For the same reason the CIA was behind the Kennedy assassination.

Many people do have medical conditions that prevent them from joining the military but you really can't do much about that... However it's sad that so many people here in the United States are overweight and uneducated...Yeah America is overweight and for a lack of a better term stupid. Before people start jumping on me, I'm a U.S. Citizen currently living in Colorado (which btw is the only state in the U.S. that is considered "lean" or not overweight, pretty sad I know :( )... The education system here is lacking compared to many other countries and we simply just don't eat healthy, not to mention we also eat too much... I know I'm generalising but you kind of have to in this sense.

Well seeing how being "overweight" doesnt incorporate muscle mass or bone structure but just how much you weigh i wouldnt trust that percentage. I am 15lbs (180lbs) "overweight" from the normal weight for my height/age of 145lbs but that is muscle and i have low bodyfat, im sure i would still probably end up in that biased %75, as well as anyone else who frequents the gym and has more muscle weight than I.

That's not really saying much. I run half-marathons, and I'm probably in better shape than a large portion of the military, but I have a surgically altered foot that would not hold up in a military situation where I can't rest it as much. Many people have conditions like mine that don't keep them from being in decent shape, but prevent them from passing the military physical.

I also think the military has upped their requirements for qualification quite a bit.

That's where some people get confused. The military has a weight table based on your height but you can exceed that weight as long as your body fat is good. For the Army (each branch varies on this) you can join at 26% if you're male or at 32% if female. This is in place because some people work out alot and as a result wouldn't make their weight.

Joining the military doesn't mean you're going to get slaughtered. Your chances of dying in the military aren't that far off from your chances of dying in a car accident driving to school. Going to the Middle East isn't Omaha Beach on a daily basis like some people think.

It's not the military's job to take an obese person and make them thin. Basic training isn't "The Biggest Loser" and the drill sergeants don't have the time to take a 350-lb person and make them drop 100+ pounds. It would just slow everybody else in training down and there is no way they would pass their physical fitness test to graduate. Good luck trying to get an obese male to do 53 sit-ups or run two miles in less than 16 minutes. Private Pile wouldn't be able to enlist at all in today's military, enlistment standards aren't the same as they were in Vietnam.

That's true, but is the study referenced based on the Army's definitions or a more loose definition of fat/obese?
