Material items don't make people happy. If I said "If I had an ipod, I would be happy". I buy an ipod, but this ipod would not satisfy, I would want a better ipod, with more memory. I would continue to desire a better ipod. Because of this, I would never be truly happy.
Of course, it works on a much larger scale.
but the thing is, you will be always buying yourself things to make you happy. you buy a ps3, so what, after 3 months you'll probably be bored of it, then 7 years later ps4 comes out, then you'll be buying that too, then getting bored of that. and its the same thing as everything else. you'll keep buying and buying things, but really all you're doing is looking to fill that emptiness with material things.lonewolf604
Thats only assuming everything else in your life is crap. You get bored with material things irregardless of your financial situation. The only difference is with money, you can do something about it.

imo thats only true if you buy things because you think they will make you happy. maybe gaming makes you happy, so naturally you wouldnt be as happy if you couldnt afford to play. but if you buy games because you think you might be happier person, thats where theres a problem.
but i do agree, people who buy playstations are soulless husks of people. :P

anything in life is like this, not just with money, things that just don't last foreverSo you're saying NOTHING can make you happy?
To say money buys you happiness is seeing in a real organic way, if that makes sense. For example, lets say xbox makes you happy. You got out and buy an xbox and playing it makes you happy. You link your happiness to the money you used to buy the xbox, therefore, you believe money buys you happiness. Thats just fine.
Othe rpeople will see it as happiness is a spiritual thing that you have to conjure up only in yourself, not through materials and whatnot. This is fine too. Whatever makes you happy just does, no matter what it is.
This theory fails and here's why. I'd consider myself lower middle class and I know for a fact if I was rich I'd be ALOT happier. xboxplayer1990
You are who you are, and money only makes you a rich miserable person.
I'd imagine a large chunk of the people who make a LOT of money also work a lot. Like one of my teachers in college. He worked for a large CGI company and worked his way up to a payscale of around $130,000-ish, if I recall. He was ALWAYS working. In the office, at home, on holiday...he always had to have his PDA and laptop, and he had to spend Christmas day one year in his office room at home because of it, and away from the regular celebrations. Sure, he had money, and he bought a lot of stuff, but he never had time to use it, or cherish it. It'd just be stuff he'd splurge on to make himself feel like he's accomplished something to make up for the lost time.
So he quit and became a teacher. Lower salary, but a good one nonetheless, and with summers partially off so he gets more time with the family. Also, *gasp* he's much happier than he was while making 65% or so of what he used to be making.
Also, some people don't have kids, and aren't materialistic.
Money can't buy me true happiness......just things to fill in the void.martialbullet

Of course I do, just, not forever. On a related note, this is why I fear getting a girlfriend. I know for a fact that later in the relationship will start taking her for granted, even...looking at other woman. I know for a fact that inevitably, I will hurt her some way that I couldn't imagine myself doing..but it sucks even more that I can't even talk to my crush who I had a crush on for 5 years :( sorry for expressing that lol :([QUOTE="hrmuffnstuff"][QUOTE="xboxplayer1990"]This theory fails and here's why. This is pretty much it. With the exception of medical procedures of course(and other vital/necessary services like that). I mean, money can also pay for those things, which are pretty important.

Look at celebrities closely. I mean not being rich/famous has its virtues too. I mean look at them, they don't have a "normal life". They have to do so many things, like travel constantly, press, deal with paparazzi. A lot of them have troubled personal lives, ex having multiple wives ect. There's probably alot more. On the top, sure they are rich, but money can't solve all of their problems.Article based on a study that was done:
Why Money Doesn't Buy Happiness
I admit it's kind of weird to ask people to quantify their own happiness, but it's not like there is really much of a better alternative method.

Many. Why do you think so many destitute Americans vote Republican? Because they think that bogus dream could one day be theirs.
I am financially well-endowed, yet I am smart enough to know that money cannot buy happiness. I am also an academic, so I don't see life in terms of dollar signs, because I know better. Money just makes you a more "facilitated" turd, if you were a turd in the first place, and it's likely you were if your primary goal was to get "rich" (monetarily) in life.
Meh, too many variables.
Right now I make about 14k a year after taxes. Its enough to pay rent and go drinking with friends a few times a month. I have a fun job, good friends, and I am the happiest I've ever been...yet I am also at my least financially stable. If I am careful, I might have an extra 60 dollars a month to throw into my savings.
Compared with my youth, and my college career where my parents supported my housing and bills sitution, I am poor but I am happy.
So, its varies.
Its funny, though, because I was talking to my parents about how little I make for being a college grad and my dad was like "dont worry, once you get a job you get with your degree and you start making real money, going from 14k a year to 40k a year will make it seem like its raining money."
Thats was very comforting.

Those three things are the most important things in the world. You are absolutely right...
If I say that my family, my career, and my education are the three most important things in the world -- I am sure with money, is a huge factor in satisfying the needs of those three which results in my (and my family's) happiness.
It may not directly buy it, but with it, can fuel that happiness. Otherwise, couples will not divorce due to financial troubles, people will not kill themselves (and their family) over it, and wars will not be fought because of it.
This is also the perfect time to say -- it is also the root of all evil as money brings about greed and envy and all the other deadly sins.

Well, money can't buy emotions. It cant buy happiness, sadness, love etc.rom11
Why would you want sadness?

People who think Education is boring...probably won't have smart or motivated kids.

The only people who have a goal of "being rich" are the ones who are not. If you already are, and also have everything else around you going well... then how can you NOT be happy?
And why do you say you know many and then follow it with why many destitute Americans vote republican?

If I was rich and smart... I would.
How does it NOT buy you happiness?
ALL people like financial security.
If there are two guys of comprable looks. One is a bartender the other is a lawyer. Which one would the girl be more inclined to go towards?
I'm not saying love doesn't mean more than money...but money is important.
You can buy a better education for your kids. Knowing your kids are getting the best education they can = happiness
More money = more financial security = less stress = happiness
More cars, more clothes, more vacations, more everything.
Someone tell me how money doesn't buy happiness.HardcoreGamer84
Cause that girl who goes to the lawyer will go to the next best thing soon enough. You bought the chance to bang her, and once she is done, she moves on. Of course when you get a terminal disease or something I am sure all the love by the ladies to get into your will shall be worth it.
Sure, giving your kids the best education is wonderful. However what is to say they would care? Cause the money is back home. So you can buy it all you want but unless your able to motivate them to not CARE about the security behind them they wont get past it and truely succeed on their own.
Your confused over that money does. It allows you to do more things that are already important to you. Money doesnt make something important to you. If anything, it makes things you obtain with it have less meaning because all of it can be easily replaced.
Money supports your happiness with options to do something on the whim. However it dosent make it. You can have everything in the world but if your so paranoid that every girl is only after your money..
I knew a guy way back. Played the stocks. Made alittle over 3 million dollars. He is LONELY as hell because he sees everyone wanting to be with him only wanting his money. It is hard, sometimes impossible, to tell the difference. He has nothing to spent the money on. Hes a rather humble guy. But everytime he came over to play cards he would talk and talk and talk and talk about every single thing.
Sometimes it is the ones who have the money, who lose somebody to a disease or accident that money cant buy/repair that take it the hardest because they realize that regardless of how much money you got it only counts on how happy you already were.
Money supports. Money dosent make happiness.
