Orson scott card, writer of the enders games series, apparently seems to hate J.K Rowling. I actually agree with many of what he says in the article, though some insults toward her are a bit harsh. What do you guys think?

Premier1101

Ender's Game = awesome first book, not sure bout the others

Harry= Awesome first few books, loses it towards the end, but some good parts.

Both writers are great. They are talented, and people read their books. Plus JK is more popular than OSC, so its easy to pick on someone more renown than you. :P I dont want to watch it right now though.

Orson Scott Card is more popular to book readers than Rowling. :?

as a person who has read enders game and the first harry harry potter book, I must say I agree completely with everything Orson Scott Card has said, and I found that other link in the article to be very amusing which shows exactly where most of Rowlings ideas came fromandyboiii
Why don't you try reading a little more before making judgments? I've read just about everything by both. Card is obviously very very superior, but you shouldn't talk without reading... His Alvin Journeymaker books, as a series, I'd put above the Ender's Game series, I think.

It was harsh, especially when he said she lacks a brain. That's a really childish insult. I agree that she shouldn't be suing the Lexicon guy and most of the other things as well.

[QUOTE="lobodob"]This thread should have a poll....lobodob

What would the poll be for? In support of J.K Rowling or against her?

Orson Scott Card vs. J.K. Rowling

Then this thread would turn into a battle of opinions, as a writer Orson Scott card is defiantly better but some prefer J.K Rowling for her storytelling. This thread isnt about who is better anyway.

Please don't degenerate this thread into a pointless 'Rowling's work VS. Card's work' as that was not the point of the article that Card written.

What he was criticising though, was her clear hypocrisy, and 'pick on the small guy' mentality.

My intention was the discussion of the article to begin with, unfortunatly it may turn into a Rowling vs Card thread.

Agreed, her books are cliche, have one dimensional characters and plots, yet they get nothing but praise. Even Stephen King Praises them, though mostly because they got kids reading rather than the actual books. He and a bunch on other authors sent J.K Rowling a message telling her she shouldnt kill of harry. This coming from an author who kills off his characters all the time!

Even though I am not a big fan of J.K Rowlings books I am curious to see what else she does after Harry Potter, right now that seems to be all she has. I know she wrote a few short stories, but I mean real novels.

Sorry to sound like a complete and utter nob, but I'd say that JK Rowling is far more popular to people who read books than Orson Scott Card. JK's fanbase is huge.

people do not equal book readers, in general. This is like the definition of hardcore vs. casual vs. non-gamer, lulz. Which I hate.

I'm not a reader, but I've never heard of this Orson Scott Card before. However, I have heard of J.K Rowling. Sounds like this guy is a sore loser. Whatever his books are, they can't be as popular as Harry Potter. However, if they are, I probably still haven't heard of them, but I don't ever read books anymore.

Supposedly, she is working on some sort of mystery/crime novel. Hopefully, she'll write the encyclopedia for the Harry Potter series at some point too.

I read it and this Card character sounds overly bitter that Rowling is more of a household name, even if his points are valid. If anything, the result of that article made me interested to seek out his stuff. Either way, the Harry Potter novels are all among my favorite books. I could care less if people perceive them as childish, cliche, and uncomplex.

A lot of the Harry Potter bashing seems to be coming from people who didn't even bother reading the whole series. It's fine not wanting to trudge through something that you don't take to right off the bat, but she improved dramatically after the first two books in particular.

Hehe. If you had known better you would have known that there have been many scripts for a Ender's Game movie but all of them just weren't good enough so they were scrapped. At least it will get an XBLA game. It's sad that you two have never even heared of Card or Ender's Game because it is a classic that should be read by everyone who cares about books.

Yeah, I meant most of the bashing. I kind of got the feeling that you at least read it. I don't really think the series is any more cliche than a majority of the genre and I think it is a bit deeper than some people credit it for.

I think he makes some good points too. In the end, his criticism is not going to make me suddenly want to trash Potter. I am happy I read this though because his books sound interesting too.

I'n not claiming that Harry Potter books are perfect, or that she is doing the correct course of action with this lawsuit.

I simply think that OSC is a poor writer and deeply dislike his books. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, as OSC is my enemy, lol.

Harry Potter is basically an encylopedia of fantasy cliches, and 'references' to other fantasy fiction.

And yet, it still makes a good read.

I do agree with his viewpoints, but he did seem more than a bit harsh. I never really saw the similarities between Ender's Game and Harry Potter before. But I do agree that the Lexicon should be published, and that Rowling is going a little overboard in this.

Rowling isn't that bad. I actually read the entire series and enjoyed them. However Card is a better writer and his criticism while harsh, is accurate. She should let the Lexicon be published.

IMO of course, but I wasn't a fan of the Ender's series and now he comes out bashing a successful writer in Rowling. He should stick to writing his semi-popular series and leave more successful writers alone.

Well, I read two of the Harry Potter books, fun in there own part but not too deep. It wasn't what I was looking for. Enders game just jumped right into the mind of Ender. But this isn't what he is writting about. He makes good points, she used and praised this Lexicon and is now sueing him. SHe is an attention ***** for lack of a better word and it was clear when she made dumbledore homosexual for no apperant reason. She has ran out of material and is looking for attention.

I think he is perfectly justified in critisizing her, even if it is a little harsh. J.K does seem to be a little desperate for attention since the Harry Potter books ended.

I love the harry potter books, they're easy to read and you're left feeling satisfied after finishing them. That being said this OSC guy did seem to make a fair point about the plot similarities...but IMO I think he should of toned down his ranting about Rowling, I sensed a twang of jealousy there tbh, but thats just me...

I think he is justified too, I stopped having respect for Rowling after the stupid Dumbledore is gay thing. Just a big arse publicity stunt and the fact she did it after sales so it wouldn't affect it her. I'm very glad that OSC feels the same way as I do. haha

[QUOTE="Ravirr"]Well, I read two of the Harry Potter books, fun in there own part but not too deep. Film-Guy

I think he is perfectly justified in critisizing her, even if it is a little harsh. J.K does seem to be a little desperate for attention since the Harry Potter books ended.

I think he is justified too, I stopped having respect for Rowling after the stupid Dumbledore is gay thing. Just a big arse publicity stunt and the fact she did it after sales so it wouldn't affect it her. I'm very glad that OSC feels the same way as I do. haha

Did she ever explain the dumbledoor being gay thing? I never really saw the point of making him gay was it just to look contriversial?

Probably, I never read into it too much. She tried to make some lame excuse for it. But once the book had been released for a while to come out and say he was gay was just down rediculous. I think it was just to be popular and be liek OMG she is sticking up for gay rights by making him gay or something as this was during one of the big gay rights time periods.

I still like HP though.

I just finished reading Enders game and I'm not a reader. I read maybe a book a year. I could not put this book down. I would read about 75 pages a day I read it in a week. Its amazing.

I'm reading Confession of an Economic hitman, then I'm gonna go on to Speaker for the dead, and finish up Enders story before I move on to bean.
