[QUOTE="Sajedene"]Did anyone else feel a little bad for James Cameron though? He/Avatar was the butt of jokes the whole night. I get that comparing to the other nominations, I wouldn't put Avatar in the same caliber and would have hated for it to win, but at the same time, I will not fail to recognize the technological achievements he's done for the industry.Sajedene
I rooted against Avatar - but I would never go as far as making it the butt of every joke because the name James Cameron is attached to it. He may be rich, he may be an ass, but he did not make the movie alone and I find it quite distasteful to all the other people who worked hard on the movie that has and will revolutionize film making to make the movie the butt of the jokes all of last night.
Does this apply for every movie, or just the ones good enough to get nominated for an oscar?
this is why i dont watch the oscars. its nothing but them trying to push their agenda. its never about the best movie. thats aight tho, james cameron turned that movie to a money printer. and hurt locker was plagerized and will probobly loose their shirts to the soldier they unlawfully based the movie on.Trollsters
While I love Avatar and think it's better than what its haters say it is I knew it wasn't going to win. It's not even in the top 3 for me. The Oscars are voted on by actors, directors, editors, producers, and the members of the Academy who make films. The public do not vote. You people have The People's Choice and MTV Movie Awards for that.
I know people in the industry who enjoyed Cameron's film and wished they were part of that 2.5billion blockbuster but even they don't see it as being the best because of that moneymaker.
The Oscars is less about politics and agenda and more about insiders patting each other in the back.
Also, what's with average actress Sandra Bullock winning Best Female Lead for a glorified Disney film? Bullock is charming, but she's in no way some amazing actress. If you were the lead in All About Steve you shouldn't win Best Actress a few months later. That's pretty weak.
Yeah because he made the movie all by himself and having the money invalidates everything else.[QUOTE="Sajedene"]

he's still a disgustingly rich man.MrGeezer

Don't know her answer to this but my answer would be to every film. While I hate certain filmmakers for having no talent and not even trying to improve (Boll) I don't hate on the film they make since I know there's hundreds working hard to make something even if in the end it ends up being crap. Now producers I hate since most rarely have any sense of what makes a good film.
I can understand people not liking a film and/or some who work in it, but to hate it like the flm or those people involved in it committed murder against their loved ones baffles me.
Wel, I have to say, she totally won me over with cameo on the short-lived series ActionAlso, what's with average actress Sandra Bullock winning Best Female Lead for a glorified Disney film? While the guy above's reason for hating Reitman is bordering on irrational there is a growing resentment in the film industry about Reitman. What really brought it out in the open was his attempt to take full credit for the adapted screenplay for Up in the Air when he actually used an earlier draft of the screenplay for that film to make the final draft. Sheldn Turner was the original screenwriter whose adaptation of the novel the film was based on Reitman used to finally make the final script.
He'd tried to use his background and lineage to first bully Turner off from taking any form of credit for the screenplay and when that failed just tried to ignore the man even though the WGA acknowledged that Turner deserved credit. Yeah, Reitman is not the golden boy his fans and he himself make him out to be. He's been on spin and damage control mode since The golden Globes. I'm not surprised his film didn't win any awards.
Buck_Hotep
That's disappointing. He seemed to me like a genuinely humble guy who wasn't full of himself.
[QUOTE="Pirate700"]
Or the Voters realized Avatar was an average movie at best.
sSubZerOo
Except many top critics like Ebert gave the movie 4 out of 4 stars.. If it were really mediocre it wouldn't get rated so high, it would get rated.. YOU KNOW.. MEDIOCRE :|
pshh i take critic reviews with a grain of salt
edit: forgot to congratulate the hurt locker it deserved it

This. In this case, it is no secret the contempt and dislike the academy has for James Cameron. But that doesn't mean they can go on and on all night in insulting (because its one thing to make fun of its another to just go on and on and on) a movie that someone they dislike made - forgetting that other people are also affected by it.I am still shocked that Avatar won best cinematography.Jazz_Fan
That win I was told sent a major shift in how voters in the cinematography camp now sees computer-assisted cinematography. Don't be surprised if future Academy nominations for cinematography has more films like Avatar and CGI-heavy films in it.
That's good. Avatar was an average film besides the shiny graphics. But I think District 9 deserves to be the winner.
Assassin1349
As much as I liked Close Encounters meets apartheid meets The Fly meets Blair Witch (very entertaining piece of sci-fi), it was nowhere near as original as everyone said it was and didn't deserve best picture.
And though I loved Avatar, it didn't have a chance. :(
I am still shocked that Avatar won best cinematography.Jazz_FanI said before, it's in a 3D space. They still have to make right camera choices.
Although I'm glad that the Hurt Locker beated Avatar I still think the Hurt Locker is a little overrated movie. There were some parts in the movie that really drag on while there are also some parts that great. I don't even know what to choose to for Best Picture because I don't think District 9 qualify as the Best Picture either.
Did anyone else feel a little bad for James Cameron though? He/Avatar was the butt of jokes the whole night. I get that comparing to the other nominations, I wouldn't put Avatar in the same caliber and would have hated for it to win, but at the same time, I will not fail to recognize the technological achievements he's done for the industry.Sajedenenot at all.. i was SOO happy when even after he (avatar) won a few awards he wasn't able to accept anything himself. he was probably the person who was on camera the most even though tarantino and clooney were far more entertaining when they were on camera. quite frankly i don't see a more undeserving movie than avatar this year.
I thought the award ceremony was very tacky and cheesy. The dance at the start was fun, but the rest of the show was awful. The presenters were mostly mediocre, and that stupid dancing to the best scores was painful to watch. Especially when they started doing that dumb flipping to the Hurt locker score. Steve Martin, and Alec Baldwin were decent but their material was crap. They should have somebody funny host like Eddie Izzard. Even though I wanted to see A Serious man win something I am glad to see Hurt Locker beat Avatar. Sandra Bullock winning best actress though was a terrible choice. Carey Mulligan should have won. I also found her short hair look oddly adorable:oops:
As those in my Oscar party said last night, they should've just hired Joss Whedon to produce and direct the show and give the hosting duties to NPH. Problem solved.
Hurt locker was an okay movie, i do think Avatar should have gotten more awards though. District 9 was very bland, i could tell what could happen before it actually did. That's good. Avatar was an average film besides the shiny graphics. But I think District 9 deserves to be the winner.

Avatar was just as predictable if not more. At least District 9 had a much better main character who wasn't one dimensional. Wikus was awesome.
Film-Guy, were you at the oscars?Jazz_Fan
I was indeed. The award show wasn't great but the free food afterward was since they had chicken pot pie and a chocolate bar:D Plus I got to talk to Jeff Bridges, James Cameron, and Scott Cooper. I found Cameron to be a bit cold though, cant explain why. He had some advice though when I told him I was a director. Jeff was the nicest guy there though. I talked to him for about 10 minutes and he gave some great advice too. I also talked to Michael Giaccino, who I think gave the best speach by far. He is also a really awesome guy, My mum works with him on the show Lost.

Does anyone remember the speech for that fashion girl that won the costume award or something? It seemed really forced/insincere.MousetachesI liked that speech, she made an really great point that period pieces more often than not get all the attention and praise when it comes to the costume category at the Oscars and she just wanted to gives some recognition no those non period piece costume designers that get over looked.

She came off as full of herself. "Well, I already have two of these"...and she just sounded like she thought she was too good to be there.

I didn't watch the Oscars, but from someone's description of the movie, it hardly sounds as if they were mocking it.
Anyway, as long as you're consistent about this. It would be sort of hypocritical if you had a problem with people mocking Avatar, and then didn't have a problem with people mocking a Uwe Boll film (as people tend to do with his films).
How did you start a conversation with these people? lol I'm just curious.cpo335
I just walked up to Jeff Bridges and congratulated him on his Oscar, then I asked about how he prefers to be directed as an actor. It just went from there. He is a really easy guy to talk to.
Sci-Fi movies don't win best picture. Aside from that presumption, Avatar wasn't deserving of best picture. Sure it looked pretty, but had an average story and average acting.
Foolio1
In all fairness, I think it's pretty rare for science fiction films to even be worthy of consideration.
I love science fiction films. But sadly, most of them just aren't very good.

I'm extremely jealous! He seems like such a laid-back kind of guy, I enjoyed hearing his acceptance speech because he sounded just a relaxed an individual as I pictured him to be after seeing him perform in films like The Big Lebowski and Men who Stare at Goats.[QUOTE="MrGeezer"]

same here, i loved avatar, simple as that. it did what movies are SUPPOSED to do, to entertain me and take me to a whole new world where i dont have to deal with all the crap of the real one.
Exactly. Ah well, its not as though I will enjoy the film any less for it losing.

While that's certainly a valid purpose for a movie to be made, I think it's a bit limiting to say that that's somehow "what movies are SUPPOSED to do".
Escapism is fine, but that's not what everyone wants in a movie. Pure entertainment is fine, but that's not what everyone wants in a movie.
