Seems like Metal Heads on OT are popping up everywhere, so for curiosity, I'm going to put a bunch of big metal genres up, and you can vote on your favorite. If you don't find Death/Glam/Prog with a twist of Industrial metal or something like that as a choice, choose the most similar genre on the list or "other" and name it in the thread. To make it easier to vote, I've put some examples up from each genre. 80's metal/Heavy Metal (early metal): Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple. Extreme Metal (Black/Death/Thrash and all inbetween): Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Slayer, Metallica, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity Nu/Industrial/Gothic Metal: Slipknot, Rammstein, Nightwish, Gothminister Prog/Folk/Viking/Power: Dream Theater, Rush, Amon Amarth, Symphony X, Dragonforce, Ensiferum Other: Anything that makes my head bang.

I like SOAD, Tool, Deftones, NIN and the like...

I guess that's Numetal/Industrial/Gothic.

I can actually enjoy most metal sub-genres, except industrial/nu/hardcore and punk inspired.
If I'd have to choose, technical death metal.

Oh, sorry about that. Pagan is pretty much the same as Folk, only with pagan lyrics.

Actually there are many Thrash metal bands better then Metallica. As for back in the 80's. Yes they were awesome. Exodus is damn good though.

The best metal is the original metal. Black Sabbath FTW.

Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward FTW!

[Ronny James Dio is not bad either]

I read in a Guitar Player magazine (I think it was) and there was a little article in it about metal. It said something to the affect of... Black Sabbath invented metal, and Metallica perfected it.

My intention was to put that under 80's, but when I think about it, it sounds pretty weird. Heavy Metal started around the 60's-70's...

I can tell if i like a band generally by how many of their songs i like. If i enjoy more songs of a band, i can probably assume that i like the band more.

I prefer Metallica's older songs from the Master of Puppets era, they've lost their touch since the Black Album though. Their songs don't seem as unique anymore.

After you perfect Metal, where else is there to go? ;)

It seems to me they just went with what worked instead of trying to make new things. "Master of Puppets" is an amazing album. "Battery" is probably one of the best album starters I have heard. :D

I don't see why people are so turned off by St. Anger. Is it because they're expectations were let down? I liked St. Anger... I thought it was a breath of fresh air for Metallica. Lighter songs... a little less noise soundings. I don't know. I just really enjoy that album as much as I enjoy Ride The Lightning or Reload.

I have not really got around to listening to Metallica's new stuff. But I highly doubt that it is as "bad" as some people make it out to be. They are great musicians.

It is very bad, when you compare it to what they are capable of. Metallica should make better albums than Load and St. Anger.

Well yeah. That may have not been the best word to use... but they sound... cleaner? I don't know. They aren't super fast and uber-overdriven like some of their other albums. *shrugs* One of my favorite songs of theirs of all time is Low Mans Lyric. I *LOVE* that song. And The Unnamed Feeling!
