On OT, there is usually a plethora of religion, politics, popularity, and troll threads. Most of these threads tend to be very active, with a lot of people participating. They are clearly the most popular thread-types on OT. So why does everybody complain about them? A lot of people express interest in a more regulated OT where such thread types can't be allowed to exist. I recently saw one user ask why the mods can't put a temporary ban on them (you know who you are). If we didn't have such threads, OT would be boring, consisting primarily of news threads (Clashes in Myanmar after Buddhist woman....) or lame threads such as "On cologne" or "PYD: Post Your Desktop". If some of you OT'ers had your way, the best thread (currently) would be: "Are curvy girls and fat girls the same?". Who would want that? Regardless of your political and religious views, the discussions are fun and interesting. Trolls are fun too, just don't get your panties in a knot. It's not a crime to troll, so don't get butthurt and ask for a banning. Trolls add flavor to the mundane cultural soup that is OT.

I enjoyed most of my book club thread. Both were compelling and had captivating discussions. Atheist questionnaire was another good one of mine. In short, I think we have both made bad threads, but tend to disagree with you when you say that we make generally bad threads.
If there was a ban on religion and politics threads, I wouldnt come to OT anymore. Trolls can be entertaining at times and are easily ignored if they are not. There can be some interesting discussions from time to time. Most other threads have no discussion.

When you get the same people in the same threads making the same arguments, OT gets very boring. Too few people can discuss without trolling, and too many can understand subtlety and different points of view.

The issue with OT isnt the threads or anything like that, its just that the activity has slowed down so much as a result of a lot of posters joining other forums that were created from other people not happy with the TOU here

I agree. People need to voice their discontent privately, or just grow thicker skin. If something bothers you, calling it a troll won't make the problem go away.
Well the bottom line is Trolls love attention. Give them that attention and they will keep coming back. If everyone ignored and didn't respond, they would eventually give up. There's no fun involved if everyone ignores you

Of course. With the case of Liquid_Ajax, everybody knew he was a troll. But with people like Lai, and possibly 0rbs, it's impossible to completely write them off as trolls. I don't think we should ignore them, because, however unpopular, people do have those views. OT should welcome people of all ideologies.
