I thought it was pretty good. I just wish we saw less talking and more paranormal activity. I'm glad this wasn't based off a true story. If it was...*gulps*
I think there was a perfect amount of scares and dialouge, the beginning was slow but it did a great job setting everything up, and got us interested in what was happening and teh characters. The film would have been a lot less chilling if we did care or know anything about the characters.I thought it was pretty good. I just wish we saw less talking and more paranormal activity. Well I just saw Paranormal Activity and wrote my review. Read/comment on it here.Nerd_Man
Great review, but I am curious what do you think could have improved the film? I thought the ending, while good, was a tad cheesy. The body being thrown at the camera looked a bit cheesy, but its a low budget film so I can forgive that.

I didn't have a problem with that, but with her staring at the camera in a demented fashion was probably the only thing in the entire movie that I just thought, "Oh, seen something like that before." I loved how after that part, the film just went into a very long silence. You realize that there are no credits... So you wonder if it really ended or not. I thought that was pretty cool.

Well I just saw Paranormal Activity and wrote my review. Read/comment on it here.Nerd_Man

I would give it a 9 personally rather than an 8.5. I cant see what could have been done to make it better. Speaking of horror films though have you seen Kairo? its probably one of my favorite ghost films.

Yeah don't take my ratings for granted. It's really what I have to say about the film that matters. Having read my review, you can tell I have nothing but praise for Paranormal Activity. Usually my ratings could change after a while. The creepiest part for me was probably...
The attic scene. It really put me at the edge of my seat. Scenes like this make you realize you're on the same level as the characters. Neither of them want to go up there, but they do anyways just to be sure. Of course nothing happened when Micah went up there, but it's the suspense that the scene had that really got most people. Much of the film was like this. Like I said in my review, I'm happy that the film really focused on the more quiet moments, such as the attic scene, rather than going all out on over-the-topic horror cliches that we're used to. I think the quiet moments, the moments that we expect the worst things to happen, is most effective because we can relate to them the most. I think some of the other creepy parts was when Katie got up in the middle of the night and just stood there for a few hours. It really was disturbing when the film fast-forwards and you see her shaking around in the same spot for a long period of time.

I didn't have a problem with that, but with her staring at the camera in a demented fashion was probably the only thing in the entire movie that I just thought, "Oh, seen something like that before." What makes this film work so well to me was the characters. The film would have failed without them, but the actors played them perfectly. It didnt even feel like acting, they felt like real people so I felt sorry for them. Not many horror films can do that well. I have seen so many horror films with bad characters. They had chemistry too so I really wanted them to do well. Its one of my favorite films of the year so far next to In The Loop.

The handle held camera work is done sooooooo much better in this then Cloverfield.SaintLeonidas
Thats good to hear because Cloverfield made my head hurt and it also did get annoying.
Yeah thats mainly because in Cloverfield Im pretty sure the guy was having a seisure the whole time :P They were running a lot. And in the kind of situation in which there is a huge monster roaming about the city, I am sure you would be shaking too.

Well I just saw Paranormal Activity and wrote my review. I loved the characters too. I thought Micah was a naturally funny character... Yes, there's some laughs in this movie. None of it was tacked on either (I had such a huge problem with that in Trick r' Treat). The ongoing joke of Mikah's obsession with capturing everything on camera was just funny. Like that part when Katie screams over a spider, Mikah jumps up and goes halfway out of the room only to come back after realizing he forgot to grab the camera was hilarious.
Moments like that help seperate this film from the generic horror crowd. I see what you mean about Trick r treat, even though i liked it I did find the humor a bit forced at times. This was so natural, these were just normal people trying to cope with a very strange situation. Their interactions and chemistry made them so likeable and real. It made their fate much more effective than a normal horror film.
I watched it and I thought it was great, the way it makes you so used to the house and the characters is really something, the scenes between the bedroom scenes are done so well to build the tension and the characters which adds so much more to the moments. I was planning on writing a little rambling write-up in FAU, but I found myself spoiling every aspect of the film. >__> I did not like the final frame of the film though, it was very gimmicky. But, everything was very well done. So clever how it does so little and with the silence makes you feel there is something deeper into the surface and the scene where it takes you into the attic after getting so comfortable with the house was very creepy...... I find it funny that right when it ends I heard about four people asking if it was real. :PJazz_Fan
Was it just the final frame? Did you like the ending aside from that? I liked how it didnt have credits, but I do think the girl's face was a bit cheesy compared to the rest of the film. I still loved it though.

I thought the fact that it had no credits, but a few minutes of complete silence just added more to the film. I guess it's kinda spoiling to tell everyone that on here, but if you go in not expecting that, it really makes you nervous and wonder if it's really over or not.
I watched it and I thought it was great, the way it makes you so used to the house and the characters is really something, the scenes between the bedroom scenes are done so well to build the tension and the characters which adds so much more to the moments. Same. I love seeing these indie film makers start out and wondering what they will do next. This film kinda reminded me of The Poughkeepsie tapes, but much better. I dont know if Poughkeepsie tapes even came out in wide release.

I thought it fit mainly because everything built up, each event getting more and more intense until that final climax which you could say is over the top but I think it built it up enough for it to be a good finale.

I was fine with it. but I would have liked it a lot better if
It ended with him running down the stairs and you hear a huge thump and it is over. Its totally different, there is no narrator talking about whats going on, there is no people talking about what they experiences as random people dramatize it. It is set up like a documentary, it is essentially as if this couple video taped about a month worth of handle held video of them around the house including at night when paranormal events are taking place which was cut down as an hour and a half documentary.
