Have you ever had it, where you get one partner and you get matched up with the worst person possible?

Well, just on Friday we had to pick partners and take part in a small assignment. We had to write a letter to eachother pretending to be one of the two characters in the book.

So, one person writes to that person and the other person writes back. My teacher puts me with the dumbest girl in class who doesn't talk at all.

But, I didn't really care about that. It's the fact that I say, okay so what are we doing?

*shrug*

Uhm, how about this?

*shrug*

Would not work with me at all.

Now, I asked for her to write her part of the letter as homework (even told her what to write) as she is doing the initial letter/email and I need hers first to write mine. (The entire class finished except for us). But even better, she's not even gonna do it. We also get to present it tomorrow. I mean, this is completely unfair.

Should I go complain to my teacher or something? She won't do anything. She is absolutely useless...

I've tried as much as I can. Only thing I can really do is write both parts myself now. I really don't deserve my mark to go down because of this.

What should I do? Also, have you had any similar experiences?

I'm in the same situation now. I've got a group with four other people. Each of us have to write something and it's due Tuesday. I said 'send me your part by Saturday so I have time to put them together and print it out.' So of course it's Sunday, I don't have anybody's stuff and I don't see them until the day it's due.

I would tell the teacher about it. Though, you think she may seem useless, but she could help you solve your problems and maybe get her to actually work with you better. This happened to me many times, like recently I was with a group of about 5 people. All 5 of these people were worthless and were slackers and literally refused to do any of the work. I tried to do all of it basically myself, but it wasn't enough and we failed the group grade. So this made me learn I should of probably told the teacher about it instead of letting it go and making me fail the assignment.

Yeah. I had a pretty big project in college and the girl in my group had to go to work when this guy in our group wanted to do the work. So, him and I were working on it that night and he gets a cal and looks at me and says "So, what we have here is like a B Plus, right?" We weren't even halfway done. He wanted to go to a party and so he rushed the entire thing, forced me to just conclude right there so he could print it off and leave. And we got a 55 :P

I hate group projects.

Yeah, I guess I'll tell the teacher. It's just really annoying. Like, I don't deserve getting a bad mark and having to get embarassed infront of my class because of her.

Talk to your teacher. Do any amount of the work you can do by yourself though. It'll show them that you at least tried.

Yeah I don't like group projects most of the time. I'd rather work solo so I can do everything the way I want it done and work at my own pace.

You need to inform your teacher about this. There is no need for you to go down along with her.

Happens to me often. Thankfully now in High School, my teachers trust us to pick our own partners. Most of my friends have the same work ethic as me so we get stuff done.

Hated it. Like 60% of my class didn't give a crap about school and grades so it was kinda tough at times.

Situations like these suck, but experience in group work is important. In your situation, you just ended up with a lazy do-nothing partner, who in the real world would probably get fired. In a school setting, I'm assuming you get individually marked so a lazy partner shouldn't be too much of an issue, but you apparently need something from her to get started. Do not write her part though, just write your part, making assumptions about whatever her letter would have said, and then keep that incase your teacher still expects you to present. Also, since I don't know the girl as well as you do, I can't really say, but I wouldn't be overly angry with her. It could be possible that she's been through some rough things and is still on the verge of returning to a normal life.

I think every time I've ever had to work with a partner or in groups in school I've always gotten the worst partner(s) possible! There's always someone who doesn't care about anything and doesn't do any work, someone who doesn't show up, or someonw who has really bad ideas and want to be the leader. Being forced to work with someone you don't know is the worst idea in school. I'd always complain to the teacher though. I don't want a bad mark because of someone else.

Oddly, the same thing happened to me last friday. Thankfully it was a quick assignment. I actually had a lab partner like that last year. As much as I enjoyed talking to her, sometimes she was absolutly useless in labs.

At least at the college level, these types of projects are typically exercises in leadership/group relations. Asking your teacher to step in and be a mediator is defeating the purpose.

You know what'll get her to talk? Ask her out on a date. See if she actually says something now. Joking aside, I would tell the teacher. Can you make her at least talk? Maybe make her laugh or something? I had plenty of group projects in college where at least one person was a massive slacker and we had to tell the professor about him/her. We ended up splitting the entire project, which wasn't bad for us but more work for him or her. I hate the types that say they have to go to a party and excuse themselves in the middle of working.

I had the opposite happen to me In Freshman year, we had a bio project, and our teacher paired us with someone who lives in the same neighborhood as me

So I got this girl who I had to work with. I'm a senior and the details are fuzzy, but I remember enjoying my weekend and working on it on the Monday we had break (we had a week vacation, and this takes a day or two tops.) When I IM'ed her about where we are going to meet for the project on Monday, she said that she did the whole thing by herself, which made me feel guilty. I asked if there was anything I could've done for the project since I didn't do anything. She said no. I kept on asking her, but she kept on refusing. At the end, I just gave in and felt weird that now I had no Bio Project to do. Then friday rolls around and she IM's me saying that she can't put my name in because I didn't do any work.
So during the weekend, I had to get construction paper and work out everything on Sunday (when I had all my supplies). That girl had a 95, while I had a 70 :|

EDIT: I think I made a thread on Gamespot about this too, but only got 1 response

I generally enjoy working in groups, but it's a double-edged sword. You can get a group that actually gets work done that you feel proud of after or get a group that either barely squeaks by or just utterly fails. I only had 3 groups like in 3 years of university so far.

Oh man, that stinks. This is why I like to have an initial planning session when starting a big project with others - gets everyone on the same page and sets expectations.

She really should have spoken with you first instead of just assuming you weren't going to do any of the work.

yeah I literally just had a project where two others and I did absolutely nothing. Not by choice but because I got matched up with two girls who were already friends I got pushed to the side and didn't really care.

I end up getting credit for literally doing absolutely nothing. So in this instance it was great, but I've had the other one as well.

It happens to everyone at least once. This is why I love high school. Only AP and Honors classes separates me from the ****wits that were in my classes all through middle school!

Or you could do what my friend used to do in situations like these... take command and during the presentation, belittle the useless partner in front of the class at every turn. If they don't know what they're doing, it's their own fault.

Are you serious? Might wanna read that part on how she's not doing ANY WORK AT ALL. I was counting on her to email me her part, but now I'm screwed. Busy enough with the essay.
