Honestly, heres how it is.

Document creation:

Microsoft office has this locked down, period. Macs productivity software that was meant to match up to it couldn't hold a candle to it. MO is powerful when it comes to everything from typing an essay, to using excel to keep track of the stock market. And with Microsoft office + Outlook + Blackberry = Your Business matters all set, can't get that done with a Mac it's not even in the same catagory and open office just blows.

Video Editing:

Once again, best done on a PC. Almost every movie you watch was edited in Sony Vegas, and touched up for DVD in adobe after effects and special effects done in Alias Maya. Sure that built in webcam, mic & iMovie are good for the **** podcast that flood itunes and basic home movie editing but even Windows Movie Maker HD > iMovie.

Graphic Desgin:

Probably the only thing the Mac has a "slight" edge in, and I only say this cause Mac is the lead platform and it processes images faster, nothing else, nothing more. But even then most stuff you see what edited with the Windows version, even the games you play are done on Windows, and programmed for Mac ON WINDOWS. Oh wow the User can multitask, obviously if you've neverd heard of shrinking the damn window than why do you even need too?

I worked in graphic design for 6 months and saw no huge differences that justified the fact someone would spend 2000 on a base Macbook, ibook, or whatever fancy name they are giving laptop and desktop that makes there users feel special. There is absolutely no reason to own a computer that expensive.

Since CS3 works with wine, i'd take this laptop install ubuntu, a mac gnome theme and CS3 and not having spend a dime on a disgrace to the consumer electronic industry that is a "Mac."

Music Production:

This is probably the only area Mac outshines PC...but not for long, more and more studios are beginning to use PCs with Sony Acid, and various other programs to avoid the high cost of the Logic + Protools combo. So enjoy the only win you'll ever have, but don't enjoy it for too long.

Gaming:

Need I say more?

haven't heard about 'the edge' befor

FUBAR24

Well, overall the design of Macbook isn't energonomic enough, nowadays very few laptops have sharp edge in the place you put your wrists on, it's not a problem if you do normal usage of it, but I'm quite often forced to do long writting sessions (even up to 8-10 hours) and if you do that the sharp edge is a big problem. I've heard some people actualy bruised themselves so much blood showed.

It's funny, first the edge, then the big heat (which makes it problematic to keep it on your lap) and finally the Steven Job's quote that "people don't read anymore".. I'm beggining to think Jobs has some kind of personal vendetta against writers ;)

yet he made the Macbook Air which is marketed to journalists :?

It's marketed at journalists? :) That's pretty small market to market to :D Not to mention AIR isn't exacly journalists friendly with it's huge size and lack of removable battery

Altough AIR did loose the edge :)

Mac users have no arguments against Windows like they had in the past. Gone are the days the Mac users would talk about Blue Screens and stuff like that.

ahhh the macbook air, one of the biggest rip offs I have ever seen.

ya one USB one Firewire, and the only way to get a CD drive is buying the external one made by mac which would take up the one USB port. and the hardware isnt that great

i'm pretty sue you can use the dvd drive of another mac wirelessly.

dj_pulserfan

funny because it's not how it is.

Microsoft office has been on macs for like 8 years.

for video editing Macs have final cut pro 2. which comes with professional level grading with the colour program. It is an industry standard and in my mind the best, I edit video for a living, but don't take my word it, take everyone else's as well!

you've already conceded on graphic design and music.

and gaming - well, bootcamp, imacs come with 8800GTs.

[QUOTE="Def_Jef88"][QUOTE="moptopskate"]Yeah anyone who says that they like PC has never owned a Mac and I am positive on that. I got a Mac because I am into graphic design and I realized how dumb I was for using a PC before and not getting a Mac earlier.moptopskate
Yeah anyone who says that they like mac has never learned how to properly use a pc and I am positive on that.

I say this because I have never heard of anyone saying how fed up they were with a Mac and how they were so grateful to switch back to a PC. For business purposes Windows is easier to gain access to programs because you can just go to any store basically and buy microsoft office. Mac wouldnt be good for the average businessman because the programs are harder to find and a busy man doesnt have time to look for all that stuff. Overall if I were to place an iMac G5 in front of you then I am positive that you would want a mac after 30 minutes of messing around with it.

Your logic is flawed. I'm a proud owner of both a quad-core dell with Vista Home Premium and a G4 Powerbook running the latest OS X. They both have their pro's and con's. You sir are just spouting fanboyism and biased opinion. Both systems are capable of the same thing, but Mac try to gear their platform to seem that they do exactly what you want when in actuallity both systems have practically the same software set for designing and can pull of the same thing.

Its not the viruses that are annoying, its the stupid windows that come up every minute or so asking you if you want to give something access or if you want to run a virus scan

moptopskate

Seeing that Windows has a higher market share then Mac, I say Windows did a good job implementing that. Because the fact that people are incompetent to not read directions and click NEXT or ACCEPT for every screen they see, who wouldn't get issues after that. Anti-Virus and Firewall programs tried to do this, but failed, cause people just ignored it. IF you actually had Vista, you would've known that this feature can be turned off easily.

The main reason why Mac's actually work better then Windows, is the fact that Apple works with a strict line of hardware. They don't have to worry about 3rd party vendors like Abit, Asus or Intel, because their software was engineered around the core of their own systems. Why do you think it's so easy to install OS X on a old G4 computer? Because Apple selected the hardware and wrote the software... Now go to x86project.org and download OS X for x86 custom built PC's, and you'll see how it's a bit more difficult to get your system to run without proper hacked drivers.

Windows on the other hand, have to develop their system for a broad range of technology, thus also the reason why Windows is on almost every PC desktop (except for Linux too).

I love both OS's, I'm just tired of people putting in biased opinions.

I like mac just because they seem more simple and I don't get stupid little error messages like I did on my desktop. Computers all do the same thing so it does not really matter that much to me.

I do like the style of macbooks, I love my ipod, and itunes is alright. I can't however see myself purchasing a mac computer any time in the near future. I use my computer mostly for gaming, and I have a second pc that is used for gaming. Network gaming between a PC and Mac is impossible to do. So theirfore since I already own multiple pc's and intend to game on them, I'll continue to buy pc's.

It all comes down to personal preferences, budget and needs...what are you getting the Mac/Pc for ?
