People who think they're smart for watching "The Big Bang Theory"

I can't get over the number of people who think the show is so clever because it revolves around nerds and "science". These people tell you you're too simple-minded to understand the clever jokes when you call out the show for the poorly-written mess it is. 

How do so many people think this show is smart and clever?

You just don't get the jokes.

I can't believe the number of people who whine about the show and the people who watch.

As with any sitcom, it's not the premise that makes the show. It's the character development and interaction that makes it good. My parents even watch it, they think it's funny and they understand nothing about science or nerd culture.

They're about as bad as people who think they're smart for not watching The Big Bang Theory.

I don't know of anybody who thinks they're smart because they watch The Big Bang Theory. I think the intention is for the viewer to identify with Penny and laugh at the smart "nerds". The joke is that you're not as smart as they are.

Yeah, it is my grandmother's favorite show and she only made it to the 9th grade.  

The show perpetuates really misinformed nerd stereotypes. Also it's added fuel to the extremely annoying "hipster retro nerd" fad.

It's kinda like The IT Crowd. You don't have to know anything about technology to get the jokes. It's more about liking the sitcom and the way they set up the jokes. I don't think I've ever met anybody who thinks they're smart for watching it, that seems silly. I watch it occasionally because Penny is hot.

Never encountered a single person who claimed to be smart because they found The Big Bang Theory to be funny, actually I think more people complain about how bad the show is and how people wrongly think they are clever for liking it.

You're just going to have to ignore them.

Just keep telling yourself you aren't the one watching the bad and unfunny sitcom. Much better stuff on television to watch.

I think more people like to watch it because they like to laugh at the nerds and identify with Penny.  It's human nature to judge those who are a bit different, and getting into the psychological side of it, there is a certain subliminal superiority complex that comes with it.  Although I don't think this psychological aspect is the reason most people watch it.

 Like I said, they watch it and identify with Penny, but laugh because the jokes are broad and can be understood by pretty much anyone.  I think they also watch it because they've never seen an actual good comedic show before.  I've come to realize that when I watch shows with legitimately clever writing, and quality characters I realize how much worse and mediocre so many shows are.

I don't know. This is probably just me but I find The Big Bang Theory to be such a "hipster" show. Some people like it, others don't, like anything in the world. Where I live, everyone seems to talk about it. Kinda ruins for me. The more I hear about it, the less I wanna see it.

Never heard anyone going Iam smart because I watch the nig bang theroy, I watch the show since I find it funny, that is all.

The show is awful. Try watching it without the laugh track.

Indeed.I for one love slapstick and think that the Three Stoogies were a comedic treasure still unrivaled to this day. With that said, 'the Big Bang Theory' f*cking sucks.

It's not particularly smart or clever, despite all the physics references. But you know what? It's funny and I like it.

This coming from a person who is not so different than those on the show, as a PhD chemist, who has been to graduate school.

Frankly, there is much more pretention around shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development.

i don't know how anyone can think they're smart after watching that show, it's just awful. lame characters, lame writing......your typical sitcom.

Totally agree. If you are so interested in what other people watch and want to judge them, you probobaly should take time out and watch a little more TV yourself.

First few seasons were good then it went downhill when it became popular [/hypster]

It's a dumb show. I can see why it has entertainment value but nonetheless it's very simple humor.

This is the Internet. The only sitcoms you are allowed to enjoy are those that have no laugh tracks/laughing audience and are filmed with only one camera that shakes all the time. So, you can only like The Office, Arrested Development (SO UNDERRATED, BREH!) and, if you are one of thems libruhls who hate 'Murica and its core traditional values, Modern Family.

I watch the show because I find it funny, knowing full well it's not about science.
