I've been a vegetarian for 2 years, but now I'm thinking about including fish in my diet to make more practical in addition to being healthy. The proper name for a person on this diet is a pescetarian, but many of these people call themselves "vegetarian" since not many people know what a pescetarian is. Is there anyone else here who is on that diet or thinking about it?

Doesn't that go against the entire concept of vegetarianism? If I just ate beef would I be a bovinarian?

I never eat red meat or pork. Rarely poultry. Sometimes fish.

If you think it'll allow you to be more healthy and doesn't go against your reasons for being vegetarian in the first place, go for it. Though I think artificially constraining items a person can eat is unhealthy, as there's nothing wrong with meat in moderation.

I guess it depends on your reasons. At least fish are raised and harvested humanly so that seems like a reason to justify eating fish. Healthwise I'm not sure. But personally I eat all meat, it's actually my prefered food.

That's part of the problem, though - they're not. A lot of shellfish and fish species are harvested in such a way that do significant damage to other creatures and their habitat (especially groundfish like flounder and warm water shrimp/crabs). It just gets less attention when, environmentally speaking, it's legitimately bad compared to slaughterhouses that are just personally offensive to some people. I think a lot of vegetarians just eat fish because they don't idenfying it as being cute and cuddly like a full mammal or bird.

There are huge environmental problems for factory farming cows and pigs. You have to choose your battles I guess.

As true as this may be most people are unaware of this and they think the consumption of cheap meat products on a daily basis is a good thing. Unfortunately.. they'd be wrong.

That's true. I think I've just found it easier to identify where my meat comes from than where my fish comes from, as it's much harder to track through the supply chain. I end up just limiting myself to locally caught fish as I know it was managed well. Same goes for meat, I suppose, but in some areas it's probably much harder to buy from smaller and free-range farms.

The way that I see it is that when it comes to environmental concerns, with fish it is a sustainability issue. You have to eat fish from fisheries that abide by laws concerning overfishing and not disrupting the natural balance in the ocean. With land-based meat, it is more of an emmissions and efficiency issue, as there really is no risk of us running out of cows or pigs. The other issues - like compassion, that is much harder to quantify without bringing emotion into the equation (whether there is a difference between killing a fish and killing a pig, for example).

Fish are animals. If you eat fish, you aren't a vegetarian. But I love how some people have the gall to still try and justify it.

No offence but to me eating a animal while being a vegetarian is pretty hypocritical in my eyes.

Anyway if you really do need the extra nutrients I'd probably go for some dairy which comes from cows that live comfortably and are well treated.

I'm aware that a true vegetarian doesn't eat fish. As I said before, I have been a vegetarian for 2 years. But now, I feel that it would be better for me to include fish in my diet.

I'd recommend eating fish as it does contain OMEGA 3 fatty acids, protein etc. Because seeing as you don't have morality issues with it I don't see why not.

I am pescetarian. It is often mistaken as vegetarians that eat fish. This is incorrect. Vegetarians don't eat fish.

I love Salmon, Tuna, Cod, King prawns, prawns. That is what I eat + vegetables and milk and eggs.

oils, and protein are high in Fish and its important for the body. You can usually replenish those nutrients with olive oil and nuts. Which are also rich in protein. But I do suggest you intake fish.

Meat is Yummy :D

I'm a Seventh Day Adventist. Our dietary laws are similar to the Jewish kosher laws. Only fish that have fins and scales are biblically clean or kosher.

I'm aware of that, and that was kind of my point - a lot of vegetarians use the definition loosely. Even pescetarian itself is basically 'vegetarian that eats fish.' Or at least most of them identify themselves that way as they think it sounds better than 'fish is the only meat I consume.'

Pescetarianism is stupid. If you're doing it for environmental or humane reasons making an exception for fish is ridiculous seeing as our oceans are in more danger of being depleted than our stock of cows. For health reasons is slightly more understandable, but still hypocritical.

Agreed. White meat chicken and lean pork (tenderloin, etc) are just as healthy as fish, cost less, and contribute less damage to the environment.

Depends, there's a lot of mercury content in a lot of fish/seafood nowadays. You have to watch your mercury intake too.

I don't like titles, but if I had to label my diet, it would be that of a pescetarian.

I don't consider myself a vegetarian because on rare, rare occasions I'll eat curry pork or something similar, but my regular diet consists of mainly fish, rice and certain roots and vegetables.
