The reports are in Chinese, but I think you get the gist.

"The PLA of the Nanjing Military Region now introduced a indigenous first person shooter/military game to their trainig and leisure program for their servicemen.

"Glorious Mission" is a FPS in the StyIe of Call of Duty or America's Army, featuring the Chinese PLA vs. the US Army. Reportedly it also has a PvP multiplayer mode with 32-36 players max. ontop of a campaign mode, and several mission and squad/command-based multiplayer modes.

It looks like this game, the first of its kind of being officially made by the PLA in cooperation with Giant Network Technology Co. Ltd., is well received by the soldiers.
Public release dates are still unknown."

Sounds like a pretty cool game. However, I think some people might object.

Thoughts?

If I am not mistaken, in Battlefield (all of them) weren't you killing US soldiers as China, Russia, Germany, Vietcong etc?

In RE5, you kill black people.

So who cares.

I have no idea, but people seem to be getting uptight about this game the army is using to train their troops.

I see no problem with that since the majority of FPS games feature American soldiers killing others.

I just find it funny that they think this will somehow improve their troops' effectiveness in actual combat.

Not surprised, as I've heard plenty of people asking for a game like this... I really don't care, doesn't seem like anything I'd be that interested in.

If this made it to the US i expect Fox News to label it as unamerican and unpatriotic. Texas v. Johnson already established that 'unamerican' and 'unpatriotism' are constitutional

Well, it does raise some issues since it's essentially state-sponsored and endorsed. But since when does the US not do any of that against china?

inb4 American hypocrisy over spending years killing Chinese soldiers in American-made FPS games.

Also, looks like s*** and looks ripped off of Battlefield 2.

Where they state sponsored? And I'm only going by what users said here but I believe someone said it was state sponsored. That makes it a bit different. If he was wrong and this was purely private then it doesn't matter.

Well, I'm in China for a few more months. Most of the games over here end up in internet cafes, which I play at now and then. Who knows, I may give it a shot, but I doubt it.

So it's not a big deal when we make games where Americans kill Africans, Europeans, Asians, and basically people of every nationality - but it is a big deal when they make games where they kill Americans

Actually, a fair amount of games get labeled 'racist' beacuse of such killing.

That U.S. Army logo on the site for the federally funded, American-made military shooter. I personally never got past the training portion of the game, so I don't know what military conflicts are involved in the actual game... but either way, it is most definitely a state-sponsored shooter.

US military branches are given x dollars to use to advertise that does not automatically mean it's state funded. But I'm not sure what's in the game and so I can't really comment.

The entirety of the U.S. Army is state funded. And the premise of the game is that, as the player, you sign up for the army, train, and get sent into combat like any real-life person would. It was designed as a recruiting system.

VensInferno

How many Russians have you talked to about that? I've talked to a couple and they do not like being the bad guy in every other video game. There are some games like CoD WaW were you are Russian good guys and I like the fact that you got to play as Russians for once. I admit I have a lot to learn about Russia, but they are not bad people.

Yes the US Army is....that doesn't mean the feds go over every expenditure. Though I'm not getting the comparison here with being trained to be a soldier vis a vis China sponsoring a game that targets US soldiers unless there is something more to the game...doesn't seem the similar. Though there is no better training than actual training and not playing a game.

Wait, what? Those are two entirely different games.

Anyway, I don't see how this is any different morally from the heaps of American shooters in which you are encouraged to shoot tanned people with funny accents.
