Your kanji is incorrect, unless you are purposely not making any sense.

I don't think you understand what that says. Your response isn't appropriate for that post.

how long were you in japan. And then something else

Actually, I made a typo. For the second question, I meant to type: 何で行っていたのか。

In Japanese, the "te" (て)and "ta" (た)forms of the verbs for go (行く)and say(言う)are similar in pronunciation and writing (when written in Kana). So, when I typed out itte ita (いって いた), I mistakingly selected the Kanji for the verb say. I meant to select the Kanji for the verb go. Anyhow, the second question, as corrected above, says Why did you go? It literally means Why were you in the state which results from having gone to Japan?

Both of you are confusing me . What he said is that it's the number one cause of death for people below 30, and you said probably most people die after 30 (?).

I was talking about overall death rate

Well..Yeah, I don't think he'd be denying that.

I think it's a mixture of pressure to get the best grades and get the best job combined with overall daily stress. If anything the Japanese demand nearly sheer perfection from both themselves but also family, when they for instance lose their job then they also get a huge emotional loss too which for some makes them depressive and eventually suicidal.

You're Korean? If so, does the Korean language use Chinese characters in its writing system? This may seem like a foolish question, but I ask because Japanese uses Chinese characters in its writing system.

East Asian societies are very fast-paced; so it's easy for people to get all stressed out. High population also means tougher competition in the workforce and at school; perhaps that's where the demanding Asian parent stereotype comes from.

I guess the average person doesn't have enough gismos and doodads to keep them occupied. People weren't meant be without stimulation. People are machines that break down when they are not busy.

But being that it's a different culture maybe that's the way they react when they see a bad movie. Maybe japan has a lot of awful films. I don't know. I'm usually depressed and I find a reason to function. Depressed as in lazy, no energy. I got over the life has no purpose junk several years ago.

Not surprised. Being an Asian myself high standards are common throughout the culture. Asian parents always want their kids to have the best jobs with the highest income (doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc) because it's both a status symbol and reason of wealth.

Not to mention there's always the notion of "striving for the best is a must otherwise your future is good as cooked."

Yeah, because I suppose you can't be carpenter, tiler, truck driver or within some other intermediate profession that are the reasons society is what it is and make decent living do it.

I can see unrealistic expectations and the desire for approval could push them to the extreme when things just don't work out the way they hoped. You'll drive yourself insane if you live to impress others.

Personally I think anyone who pushes someone into something they don't have the knack or talent for is just hoping for success. But it's just an inevitable failure.

Well, happiness doesn't exist if you're striving to be the best, according to my parents when I was younger. If you have money and status, happiness doesn't matter because you've got the necessities to survive. That's what my grandparents always said before they passed.

But I don't understand the whole "striving to be the best" thing, especially since many Asians end up being doctors, engineers, etc.. at the end. How is that the best? Many people who enjoy their early lives, play sports, etc.. Also end up being successful business people, doctors, and engineers. It is essentially saying being an average person who makes a decent amount of money will give you money and status. It doesn't make any sence..:?

Not all Asians are geniuses at math and science. In fact, few of them have the talent to get through post secondary education and move on to get a job in the medical, law, or engineering field. I don't know why, but having a job title like that is like a status symbol in Asian culture. It makes the parents feel proud that their kid is an aerospace engineer or a surgeon.

I went to a school that was full of Asians, and not a single one of them took the time to enjoy themselves with sports or any leisure activity. It was study, study, and study some more. I guess that's their notion of fun.

It's a shame really. I'm Asian too (Well..Indian, the forgotten Asians >_>), and it's a bit like that with Indians too, but definitely not to the extent that I see with Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese kids.

I played sports all through high school, play the guitar, enjoy music, and have many other hobbies. I still have a motivation to study though, and I got myself into a great college, especially for my major. The thing is though..I built up that motivation personally myself, and not have it forced onto me.

From what I see from where I go though, the Asians here are very chill, and after talking to them, it's because they were pressured so much in HS from their parents. After they got into the dorms to live by themselves, they started enjoying a lot of other stuff.

The pressure from my high school was ridiculous, but I guess it's because it's full of Asians and the teachers expect us to work our fullest. There were some fun times, but hell, it was misery most of the time. Our sports teams were only like 15% Asian, and note that the school is 95% Asian. It's just beyond unbelievable.

But yeah, after everyone graduated, people started going out more often. Back then no one would go out and now everyone hangs out for a movie or dinner occasionally during the summer.

It's not suppose to make sense honestly. Thats the way we are raised(i'm asian) and that's the way it is. I sure as hell won't be passing that "tradition" to my children(thats if I have any)

I understand, the fact is that it doesn't make any sence at all :P. But on that last part you said, I heard that from a lot of my Asian friends too (except for the doubt on having childen haha).

Heh, I'm sure it'll end sooner or later as the older generations lose their influence.

Not to offend or insult anyone but anyone who wouldsays thriving and success is more important than everything else is either manipulating you or they are stupid. Others would like to live and enjoy their lives. Status is fool's gold. The only thing that comes out ofspending all of your time working hard for status and wealth is high maintenance and all sorts new friends that need money. Mecenaries are never very good at what they do anyway, because they persue money. They're not motivated by what they can do for others or society it's always about how much they can get for their selves.

[QUOTE="weezyfb"]i guess it has to do with their culturemeconate
...I don't quite understand what you mean... I think you're taking Kamikaze a little too seriously. :P

lol maybe, maybe not

Bushido code really didnt phase out until after WWII. Suicide in Japan is not as honorable as it once was, but it has only been a few short decades since it has been that way. Compared to the west and our attitude towards suicide, Japan might as well have suicide booths

Isn't there a declining birth rate in Japan too? Both do not go well together...Flame_Blade88
There's a declining birth rate in pretty much every western country. They only have stable populations due to immigrants. Asia in general tends to have higher standards for people, goes for everything from work ethic to manners. Also i think the more interesting question is whether a higher suicide rate is worth a higher achieving population; if a raise of 1 suicide per 100,000 means the cure for lung cancer is found 10 years earlier is it worth it?

As long as they still have enough people to keep creating cool electronics and video games my view of Japan will not change.

Stress breads suicide.

Japan culture is one that pushes for maximum success and informality.

Being forced to succeed and get straight A's by working your @$$ off at school, then cram school by parents. Only to be bullied by kids for standing out, and paying bribes to them while teachers watch and do nothing.

Those kind of conditions breed stress, and stress breeds suicide.
