Should there be a seperation of church and state? There pretty much already is, but there is definitely plenty of people trying to change that. I was just watching a CNN segment by Anderson Cooper, called "God's Country". There are people who want Christianity to pretty much decide and dictate the laws.

How can they justify themselves? Religion should play zero part in the law. If you want to believe in a religion, then that's great. That's awesome. But that is YOUR greatness, and YOUR awesomeness... and YOURS alone. Not everyone is a Christian, and certainly not every is even religious.

So why should we listen to only Christian values, as some people clearly want that?

Thoughts?

Can relegion play a part in the government? Sure, it does everyday. It's part of the person you elected. But that's not what seperation of church and state is, which most people don't understand.

Yes, because any rational-thinking society cannot base itself upon the doctrine of a single religion, as doing so would effectively hamper free speech and social progress.

Yes seperation is good. Why is your poll the exact opposite of the topic title?

However, if the majority of a country follows a certain religion and there is a vote based upon what the majority of people believe to be right, then I can't fault them for what they vote. This is a semi-democratic-republic, so the votes of the population do matter, whether they are religious or not.

As for myself, I try to seperate myself from my own opinion and decide what is best for the country as a whole. I know a lot of people don't do that, but that is their right, and I'm not going to be an ass and tell other people what they should think.

There should be complete freedom of religion...period, unless said religion directly harms human beings, through rituals like human sacrifice.

No of course not.. Look at the numerous countries through out history that had a national religion.. All of them were brutal theocracies/Monarchs.. Ironically enough when religion is in power, it seems to do the exact opposite thing from all those good attentions that is claimed to come from them.. On the contrary it has caused quite a few atrocities in history.. Not to say religion is bad, but it certainly seems that the fanatics get in to power instead of a rational person. Not to mention we would be doing exactly the opposite thing the Founding Fathers wanted.

Also I don't understand how Christainity would work.. Think about it, there are uncountable amounts of sects in Christanity as varied as they are many...

I did the same thing, i voted yes but meant no so this poll is off. The topic is the opposite of what the thread says. I think it's very wrong for someones religion to ever interfere with any laws but it's gonna happen no matter what because of the politicians beliefs.. :/ A perfect example is stem cell reseach, it's ok to throw them away in the garbage which is what happens now but it's immoral to use them to cure disease... very flawed thinking if you ask me, what ever happened to using common sense..

Crap I did it too. The thread question and the poll question don't match. I vote for "no" on the poll question and "yes" to the topic question.
