Okay... What exactly is the point here? The Vatican feels there is a double standard between religious and political beliefs? So what?

(now if this had literally happened it would be super-big news. I would probably laugh. Maybe if Obama visits the Pope will have the Swiss guard hold him hostage unless the U.S. overturns Roe V. Wade).

Anyway Pelosi had a private meeting with His Holiness last Wednesday but the statements released by the them make it seem like they weren't even in the same room. Pelosi's statement said "had the opportunity to praise the Church's leadership in fighting poverty, hunger, and global warming, as well as the Holy Father's dedication to religious freedom and his upcoming trip and message to Israel. "

The Holy See press release said " His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural moral law and the Church's consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death which enjoin all Catholics, and especially legislators, jurists and those responsible for the common good of society, to work in co-operation with all men and women of good will in creating a just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages of its development." One wonders if Pelosi's stubbornness and hardened-heart will ever cease, leaving her to realize the only responsible answer to her support of abortion is mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

Something tells me that this is going to result in a long-winded argument about the supremacy of positions in relation to party loyalties and/or religious beliefs (with a hint of hot button political issues) that will only leave both sides exhausted, frustrated, and all the less willing to listen to the other side.

I'll make it easy and say that while I don't agree with your beliefs, I respect them as one human being to another.

*hugs* :)

Well hopefully soon we can get to a point where you do not have to proclaim your allegiance to the church in order to be elected in this country, so that we can forget about the archaic Vatican once and for all.

What, I believe your insinuation is a card game.

I suppose, or you could look up catholic history, and study the bloodthirsty nature of the beast.

-If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through. (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)

-For the land of Israel lies empty and broken after your attacks, but the LORD will restore its honor and power again. Shields flash red in the sunlight! The attack begins! See their scarlet uniforms! Watch as their glittering chariots move into position, with a forest of spears waving above them. The chariots race recklessly along the streets and through the squares, swift as lightning, flickering like torches. The king shouts to his officers; they stumble in their haste, rushing to the walls to set up their defenses. But too late! The river gates are open! The enemy has entered! The palace is about to collapse! Nineveh's exile has been decreed, and all the servant girls mourn its capture. Listen to them moan like doves; watch them beat their breasts in sorrow. Nineveh is like a leaking water reservoir! The people are slipping away. "Stop, stop!" someone shouts, but the people just keep on running. Loot the silver! Plunder the gold! There seems no end to Nineveh's many treasures – its vast, uncounted wealth. Soon the city is an empty shambles, stripped of its wealth. Hearts melt in horror, and knees shake. The people stand aghast, their faces pale and trembling. (Nahum 2:2-10 NLT)

-"I have wiped out many nations, devastating their fortress walls and towers. Their cities are now deserted; their streets are in silent ruin. There are no survivors to even tell what happened. I thought, 'Surely they will have reverence for me now! Surely they will listen to my warnings, so I won't need to strike again.' But no; however much I punish them, they continue their evil practices from dawn till dusk and dusk till dawn." So now the LORD says: "Be patient; the time is coming soon when I will stand up and accuse these evil nations. For it is my decision to gather together the kingdoms of the earth and pour out my fiercest anger and fury on them. All the earth will be devoured by the fire of my jealousy. "On that day I will purify the lips of all people, so that everyone will be able to worship the LORD together. My scattered people who live beyond the rivers of Ethiopia will come to present their offerings. (Zephaniah 3:6-10 NLT)

-"You Ethiopians will also be slaughtered by my sword," says the LORD. And the LORD will strike the lands of the north with his fist. He will destroy Assyria and make its great capital, Nineveh, a desolate wasteland, parched like a desert. The city that once was so proud will become a pasture for sheep and cattle. All sorts of wild animals will settle there. Owls of many kinds will live among the ruins of its palaces, hooting from the gaping windows. Rubble will block all the doorways, and the cedar paneling will lie open to the wind and weather. This is the fate of that boisterous city, once so secure. "In all the world there is no city as great as I," it boasted. But now, look how it has become an utter ruin, a place where animals live! Everyone passing that way will laugh in derision or shake a defiant fist. (Zephaniah 2:12-15 NLT) -"I will sweep away everything in all your land," says the LORD. "I will sweep away both people and animals alike. Even the birds of the air and the fish in the sea will die. I will reduce the wicked to heaps of rubble, along with the rest of humanity," says the LORD. "I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist and destroy every last trace of their Baal worship. I will put an end to all the idolatrous priests, so that even the memory of them will disappear. For they go up to their roofs and bow to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the LORD, but then they worship Molech, too. So now I will destroy them! And I will destroy those who used to worship me but now no longer do. They no longer ask for the LORD's guidance or seek my blessings." (Zephaniah 1:2-6 NLT)

-After Joshua died, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Which tribe should attack the Canaanites first?" The LORD answered, "Judah, for I have given them victory over the land." The leaders of Judah said to their relatives from the tribe of Simeon, "Join with us to fight against the Canaanites living in the territory allotted to us. Then we will help you conquer your territory." So the men of Simeon went with Judah. When the men of Judah attacked, the LORD gave them victory over the Canaanites and Perizzites, and they killed ten thousand enemy warriors at the town of Bezek. While at Bezek they encountered King Adoni-bezek and fought against him, and the Canaanites and Perizzites were defeated. Adoni-bezek escaped, but the Israelites soon captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes. Adoni-bezek said, "I once had seventy kings with thumbs and big toes cut off, eating scraps from under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them." They took him to Jerusalem, and he died there. The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and captured it, killing all its people and setting the city on fire. (Judges 1:1-8 NLT)

Need more? It's ironic that a group with a book that demands so much blood is so against first trimester abortion.

abortion is not a punishment, so guilt has nothing to do with the issue. Its simply a solution to what is often a huge problem.

Be specific please, because I'm not quite sure what you mean here? I wonder what Barack has to say about the fact that the U.S. got to where it is today is because of all the bad things it did: Slavery, Slaughtering the Indians, Invading Mexico, Invading Hawaii, Invading the Philipines, exploiting the cheap labor of immigrants.

Nothing, however, the brain doesn't even start development until long after the first trimester, therefore an abortion is not punitive, it's protective. Punitive would be to force a victim of rape to give birth to a child born of non-consensual intercourse, and to carry those horrid memories for 9 months before it.

Need more? It's ironic that a group with a book that demands so much blood is so against first trimester abortion.

mrbojangles25

The Israelites had to defend themselves against the Canaanites and others. Besides, these people are guilty of something, what is an unborn child guilty of?

abortion is not a punishment, so guilt has nothing to do with the issue. Its simply a solution to what is often a huge problem.

Is life this "huge problem" of which you speak? abortion is not a solution to a problem, abortion is a problem.

Nothing, however, the brain doesn't even start development until long after the first trimester, therefore an abortion is not punitive, it's protective. Punitive would be to force a victim of rape to give birth to a child born of non-consensual intercourse, and to carry those horrid memories for 9 months before it.

what does abortion protect except for Planned Parenthood's wallet and Cecile Richard's Mansion? Punitive would be to subject a woman to such an excruciating surgery and to allow her to be exploited by greedy abortion clinics and left with Post abortion syndrome.

[QUOTE="SpaceMoose"]I wonder what Pope Benedict XVI has to say about the fact that the reason the Catholic church got to where it is today is by all of the messed up crap it did throughout history.JoeRatz16

Obama is black, he is well aware of what horrible things the US has done, not to mention he is old enough to have lived through civil rights and discrimination violations.

But the simple fact is that the US is so very young, and our history is relatively gentle when compared to the Church's. So, in short, a man that heads an institution that has hundreds of years of violence, oppression, and war under its belt needs to be a little bit more modest.

I mean, for example, what is the aborting of a pregnancy compared to all the wholesale slaughter and oppression the church has done? Nothing.

Greedy? Abortions, like all medical treatments, are covered by OHIP here.

Here's greedy:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/4308456/Florida-Catholic-priests-stole-millions-from-collection-plate.html

As per post-abortion system, it's been proven to be LESS prevelent than postpartum depression, and is therefore not really adding to your case.

First trimester surgery is not painful.

Yes, gee, I wonder what Obama would say about slavery. Seriously, you cannot be that freaking stupid, so stop pretending.

Exploited? It is the woman's choice, remember? And it is not necessarily an "excruciating surgery". Oftentimes you can do it with a pill nowadays. And claims of "post-abortion syndrome" are overstated, and often short-lived or non-existent.

Are you really that naive?

Children are a blessing, when they can be. Otherwise, they are doom. A child is not only a huge responsibility most people are not ready for, but a huge burden financially and in other ways.

If my girlfriend (well, ex girlfriend) got pregnant, she would A.) have to quit her job in a few months, B.) start seeing a doctor, which would cost a lot of money due to the fact neither of us have health insurance, and C.) inconvenience our lives. Not to mention I would problably be guilted into getting married to her, since her family is traditional and conservative.

And that is only during the pregnancy. Once the baby is born, we need to feed it, clothe it, shelter it, educate it...for EIGHTEEN YEARS! And, of course, because we had this child when we were unpreparedour careers would be hindered, so we would not have the financial support needed.

As for planned parenthood, they are providing a service. They deserve to get paid, and they would not be necessary if people did not want abortions. And instances of post abortion syndrome are far fewer than the mental illnesses suffered by women that actually give birth, believe it or not.

Let me just end with this: for those that plan having a child, its a blessing. For those that do not plan it and are practicing safe sex, abortion is a blessing.

To be fair, the Catholic church is also against premarital sex, although I have to wonder how many "Catholics" actually follow that rule. They seem more interested in following easy ones like not eating meat during one seventh of the week during a particular time of the year, and apparently if something spends most of its life swimming that makes it not "meat." :P

Yes, they may preach that, but their practice is different. After all, what cant you do when all is forgiven with a simple confessional. Or is that another christian religion that tries to distinguish itself from another christian religion despite being christian in the end and worshipping christ...

[QUOTE="xaos"][QUOTE="JoeRatz16"] Hyperbole isn't very convincing, but I realize that you have no interest in convincing people but rather in rolling around in moral certitude.JoeRatz16
Convincing Foo's is hard work, and some people are just impossible to convince there mr. Xaos

I'm sure, particularly when your arguments are based on appeal to an authority that is only recognized by people who already agree with you. Perhaps you noticed from other folks' responses that your arguments have not been very persuasive to folks who are not already ardent Catholics?
(what is a Xaos, how do you pronounce Xaos does it rhyme with mouse or Mayos).JoeRatz16
It's a transcription of the Greek root word Χ Α Ο Σ, meaning (and pronounced) "chaos."
