pork chop = offensive?!?!? Say what?

Here's a link to a story about a minor league baseball team that changed the name of its mascot because "pork chop" is apparently offensive to Hispanic people.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs' mascot was a large pig named PorkChop. Starting next season, the pig's name will be changed to Ferrous (derived from the latin root of iron, "ferrum").

The team's general manager says "We were really unaware of any negative connotations with the word pork chop." Me too! I had no idea it was a racial slur. When I hear "pork chop", I think of... y'know... PORK CHOPS (they're quite tasty with BBQ sauce).

How about you? Did you know it was offensive?

Pretty soon hot dogs will be offensive too.

I'm hispanic, but this is definitely news to me. When I hear pork chop, I don't think racial slur...I'm thinking dinner.

That's a different issue. I'm just surprised this was offensive in the first place. There are lots of words and phrases that some people find derogatory, but "pork chop" is a new one to me.

dammit.. i better be careful next time i order pork chops in a restarant.. the dishwasher might get pissed.

I read the article and :

1. Thought it was a group just trying to get pub for their organization.

2. Thought it was just a guy now trying to get revenge because someone picked on him when he was younger.

Anything can be offensive. People just need to wise up a little. Sure we shouldn't go around using nasty terms for people just because we feel like it, but something has to give.

Oh and you know whats funny? In Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 they censored the word "Coon" as it is apparently a racist term for asian people. Found that out when discussing getting racoon medals for a level and in my laziness I left out the ra, lol.
