The Netherlands, particularly Amsterdam, has long been a place known for its lax laws on marijuana. As a result, a lot of people migrate to Amsterdam to smoke marijuana. However, recently a judge in the Netherlands has enacted a ruling which bans tourists from smoking/ consuming marijuana. What do you think of this? Here is the source.

Who cares as long as prostitution is still allowed. That's all that matters.

That sucks ass. There's been a recent conservative movement gaining some steam there, this is a big win for them. They've been saying for a while that tourists have been using pot shops as meeting places for trafficking other drugs, but calling their statistics dubious would be a compliment.

I remember when I first heard about this. I expect tourism to drop, although now that I think about it, that may be the intention of this ruling.

That's a shame, I was planning on travelling across Europe next year. Then again, it's illegal here for everybody and it's pretty easy to find so I guess it can't be too hard when it's legal for most of the people there. Would be a shame if I couldn't do it in one of those cafes though.

You'd be surprised. Think of how easy it is to go into a bar and get a drink or buy liquor at a store if you're underage. It might be easier to buy it on the street, but you can do that anywhere.

Everyone had their own rooms but he was smoking in his and starting getting knocks on the door from people who could smell it. He said by the end of the week his room was full of people from cleaners to doctors coming over to have a sesh.

This'll actually get tourists to care more about the culture and history of the Netherlands than just to use it as an opportunity to legally do drugs.

I may be wrong, but isn't marijuana also legal to use in Peru?

I never heard of this new law, mainly because I don't visit coffeeshops that often, but it seems to be true indeed. Kind of a dumb move if you ask me. But as of now we have a demissionary government in The Netherlands. We have to vote for a new cabinet in september, so there's a chance that this new law is going to be overturned :D
And it's definitely going to be overturned when the government finds out that this will be killing for our tourism. Since we are in a recession at the moment all the money is welcome.

And I think that coffeeshop owners can think up something that cheats the law. Like having temporary passes, or really cheap passes, or chaperones that buy the marijuana for you or something like that.

Spitfirer

It may be ridiculous but whether or not it actually stops tourists all depends on their methods of enforcement. For example, if they require purchasers to show a local ID or passport there's not much a tourist can legally do to get around that since using a fake ID would obviously be illegal.

People are forgetting that the current Dutch government has recently collapsed and it's still unclear whether the newly elected government will actually uphold this ban. Nonetheless if it is, it can only do damage to revenue the city will generate, while tourists will still be able to get MJ quite easily. A situation I can see happening is Dutch citizens buying the pot for tourists with their so called "weed pass". Perhaps for a price, which will lead to a black economy. Mrs. Merkel and her 3.0% budget deficit won't like that!

I've been to the Netherlands twice and Amsterdam has things just as good as weed anyway. Maastricht is a nice city/town too.

bullsh!t. Any place can be "beautiful" to visit, that's not why lots of people go to Amsterdam.
