a friend of mine is a neighbor of the family and says their dad was in critical condition but has survived. Their mom has passed away, though.

Also, the imam of their neighborhood mosque tweeted that he was a family friend, and never saw the twins pray with them.

The dispute was that the parents barred the twins from traveling to Syria to join ISIS. And the group brainwashed the twins into the belief that killing them was righteous (which, to note, is not permitted in Islam given any circumstance.)
