hey guys...

in Singapore we have pretty strict school rules and have many punishments along with it.

punishments in most highschools her range from writing lines to getting explled.

just a brief example of how punishments are given here...

if we miss an assignment deadline we have to stay back after school to get it done before going home.

frequent offenders get detention, caning, then get suspended if it gets too out of hand...

bullying is not tolerated at all. its a sraight caning.fighting as well, caning and suspension.

i havent received any of that, but my math teacher made write 100 lines writing " I will remember to write the assignment topic in the future"
and i got detention once for coming to school late...

i was just wondering what kind of punishments are most frequent in schools from your country, or when you were in school.

and also your comments on what Seth Rogen said about Singapore...

it was a pretty big deal here...

I personally believe you should focus on school. I wish i had. Here in Canada teachers aren't allowed to hit students, and are fired/suspended for doing so. However detentions and suspensions for fights/disrespect are quite common.

Your school's punishments kinda sound like what my school's policy is, minus the writing lines part. However the difference is that it sounds like your school actually enforces its policy compared to mine's failure of management that gets nothing done.

This results in punishments mainly left to whatever the teachers want, which can range from having you sing in spanish in front of the class to the teacher instructing other students to punch you.

Oh btw this is from a redneck part of northwest america.

In Pakistan our punishments included slaps (i mean proper slaps that hurt like f***), caning, ear twisting and many more. I still remember getting slapped for writing too light with the pencil. In UK the punishments are same as yours except no caning.

Umm if you're caught doing drugs on school property you get expelled, if you cause too much **** in class you get an in school suspension and that's all that is really common, I mean if you fight you might get a detention or something but a suspension is rarely the case unless you hospitalize the kid. This is in Australia btw.

There's this cool punishment called detention/expulsion for this super cool rule for self defense.

You can't defend yourself in a fight, according to the rule. You must allow whomever it is to relentlessly pound into your face.

Yay for school! :D

They had detentions but they never really worked. Also suspensions but the people who got suspended didn't care about it, you could technically get expelled but the ammount of paper work and evidence you need meant that never actually happened, it was easier to suspend someone until the end of school.

From what i remember it was the same at my school. School policy to punish all involved equally.

You get caught doing drugs at my school you will get a detention and that is about it. However the school has gotten an exchange student deported for bringing a gallon of vodka to school with him. Also interesting is how my school deals with guns, you can bring a gun to school as long as you have the principal keep it in his office till you leave, if they find a gun in your car then you will get it detention, the only time they make a big deal about it is if you happen to bring it in and start waving it around or something.

It's very hard for an Aussie kid who is not from a farm to get a hold of a gun but a kid did get threatened with a knife once, I don't think anything was done about that.

A gallon of vodka? Dayum.

I used to have my hands beaten with a wooden plank when I misbehaved in primary school. And do you know what ? I've grown to be a decent, educated person who actively participates in community affairs, and I now have a job and a happy family - instead of some little punk who goes around painting walls with grafitti at 3.00am, and generally behaving like a monkey. Maybe we could use some good old-skool education methods with today's young people.

I did not know that ish still flies in america. Isn't the school afraid of getting sued?

Norway is so liberal it would be a national news story had a teacher caned a student. We don't even get detentions here, the worst that can happen is a bad order-grade and a strict chat with Parents/teachers/police. That's right, police get in involved in school punch-ups here. It's pretty ridiculous.

So, you guys gets caned? ...Nice. Kidding. Here, the teachers put on airs as if they don't care if a student does their work or not...but they do, since everyone failing their classes would make them look bad.

my school (and any school in my country) are not allowed to give detentions...and suspensions are really not that common...you get suspended for very bad actions like bringing alcohol to the school (thats like a 2 months suspension) and starting a fight... expelling students is extremely rare...they have to repeat a great fault many times to get expelled...but usually...if they do it 2 times, they are denied entrance the next year

It's kinda similar here in Malaysia, though I went to a Chinese private school and not a public school. Only we don't write lines, we are asked to write a 500 word report.

In elementary school (here in CA), punishments just amounted to detention, lines, suspension, or expulsion.

In high school, sometimes detention would involve either staying during the afternoon or coming in on Saturday mornings.

One memorable experience with detention came when I was at the end of my senior year of high school. I had a lot of legitimate absences over my four years there, but I had never gotten them cleared with the office, and nobody told me that those uncleared absences had resulted in my accumulating alot of hours of detention (I couldn't get my diploma until I completed all those hours of detention). So, I did a few detention hours, and then when it came time for all the seniors to go to the gym for their final clearance for graduation with the deans, I went up to the dean and got cleared. I asked about all the detention hours I still had to do. The dean just looked at me and said, "Let's just say you've been exonerated." I was well-liked among teachers, staff, and administration at my school, so I guess that familiarity paid off :)

I believe they should bring back punishments here in the U.S. So many times should a teacher be able to slap a kid, make them do manual labor, or write on a chalkboard. Sure we will have some teachers that will abuse it. But honestly in the long run it will be good for the country.

I am sure the school is afraid of being sued but their management is so screwed up they can't get any policies to actually work somewhat decently in the first place to stop it.

And there is also the attitude of the students, parents and teachers as well, no one here makes a big deal about the punishment types, but I know that if they tried the same thing at some city slicker school all hell would break loose. We had a transfer student once from bellevue which is a fancy city high school, who was appalled by the physics teacher's attitude and teaching style and complained to her parents who went to the teacher, at which point he pretty much laughed in their faces.

At our school (in Canada), we get punishments for the stupidest things, like not wearing the right colour t-shirt underneath our uniform. I get that other places are stricter and have more severe consequences, but I still think it's ridiculous because all the serious things are ignored.

Basic punishments are parents being called, detention, and suspension. You have to mess up REALLY bad to get expelled, since I know a few people that have done enough to be expelled 3 or 4 times over and are still just getting suspensions.

I agree 100%!!! This would only work though if the parents would do the same. It's so easy to tell which kids get proper discipline at home and which don't. I don't have a problem with giving the paddles back to the teachers or just the principals.

What is caning, do your teachers throw cans at you?:?

Anyway, school punishments here in the US aren't much different, actually, in my school fighting is basicly an instant expulsion so my school is a little stricter.

Here, if you cause disruption in class or piss off the teacher, they send you out of the room. They don't care what happens after that. Either you get caught by an administrator and you are given detention, or you just miss class. If you do it a lot you could get an administrator referral and the administrators do what they want. For other minor offenses, particularly being late you class, you get lunch detention (not really a punishment). For fighting, drugs, other major things, you get a suspension.

In the US, schools need to start making kids who don't do their homework stay after to do it (even if it interferes with sports) and start handing out detention for misbehaving. That would be much better than suspending students for bringing Oregano to school. As far as your school goes, I agree with all of it except the caning and 100 lines for forgetting to write the assignment topic seems a bit harsh. Normally, we'd just lose a few points off our grades for that.

What is caning, do your teachers throw cans at you?

It's where you spank someone with a large rod. You can think of it like paddling, except that instead of a giant wooden board your ass gets hit with a 1 inch thick wooden rod. Anyway, in regards to OP's question, discipline in US schools isn't too different. At least in my old high school's case, if you were late to cIass too many times or had too many unexcused absences you got in-school suspension/after-school detention. In addition, if you had too many unexcused absences the county would order your parents to go to court to find out what the hell is going on, why they're such bad parents, and probably fine them. Out of school suspensions were handed down for things like fighting (and you'd normally get arrested for that too since we had cops patrolling the school). Expulsions were rare and only got handed out to really troublesome kids, although I knew one girl who got expelled because she lost her scrap paper during a state-wide standard exam (in reality she just didn't want to hand it over because she had been writing notes to her friend with it). My school was REALLY obsessive about staying high in state rankings and an issue like "missing scrap paper" is cause for the entire school's exam results to be invalidated, so the school administration freaked out and expelled her that day.

No really, bring back punishments. So many kids need to be put in their place and teachers can't do anything about it. People really believe talking will solve anything and theres no need for "violence." I like to refer to is as solution and progress.

[QUOTE="MgamerBD"]I believe they should bring back punishments here in the U.S. So many times should a teacher be able to slap a kid, make them do manual labor, or write on a chalkboard. Sure we will have some teachers that will abuse it. But honestly in the long run it will be good for the country.ChubbyGuy40

It instills da disriprine!

No really, bring back punishments. So many kids need to be put in their place and teachers can't do anything about it. People really believe talking will solve anything and theres no need for "violence." I like to refer to is as solution and progress.

Violence doesnt help much in the long run either. If a kid is lazy/cheeky, chances are he'll stay that way.

What is caning, do your teachers throw cans at you?:?

Anyway, school punishments here in the US aren't much different, actually, in my school fighting is basicly an instant expulsion so my school is a little stricter.

My first thought was canning fruits and vegetables, for some reason.

On the topic of throwing though, my old french teacher was probably the best with discipline, since she was in the army. Not entirely legal I think, but it kept everyone in line. She threw a hole puncher at a kid once, threw someone's desk across the room and also threw an electric pencil sharpener at someone.

Why not? Show up late to a job and you eventually get fired. Basically to teach you that.

[QUOTE="jiggaleroy2nd"]I used to have my hands beaten with a wooden plank when I misbehaved in primary school.

This is a huge assumption that people act like that in school. yes there are clowns out there. but i never got anything like that and i am decent educated person with helping the commuity have a job etc... so don't sit there and compare it when your jumping to clouison big time.

school=job???

first off i want to know why he got detetion for missing school if there was a vaild reason or is just cause he also is late. secondly... if i am ususally going to be late to work i give them a call. and i am not ususally late. one day it took me 1hr and 30 minutes to get to work cause of accidents and the weather.

there are reason for people being late i don't believe if your late first two times you derseve anything. teachers have been late, buses have been late... etc.. it could of been cause of an accident, pull over, weather, not getting up on time etc... it a lot of diffrent things.

Usually the first 1 or 2 times you'd get a warning. However if you're frequently late it's an issue.

There's this cool punishment called detention/expulsion for this super cool rule for self defense.

You can't defend yourself in a fight, according to the rule. You must allow whomever it is to relentlessly pound into your face.

Yay for school! :D

Bladecutter56

ya i had that rule too when i was in school. it was lame and dumb to put nicely and to avoid getting modded. if you wanted to not get in trouble with self defense you had to get beat up and night even remotely look like you were fighting back. you might as well tell the guy hand cuff me first then start punching to ensure you didnt get in trouble.

One of my teachers in HS, who I still go back there to visit, yells at the kid infront of the entire class. I love how they try to act tough when he pokes a nerve in them verbally

Ah, this brings back memories from middle school. Horrible ones.

Gang fights happen so often. The most they get is the principal rounding up everyone in the school, forcing them into an assembly, and just ***** about the problem all day. I'm starting to imagine that the principal is corrupt herself because nothing happens. At the very most they'd put everyone into detention just because one kid wanted to be a douchebag.

My school barely enforces the rules. Most of the girls break the dress code, and when you get a detention half the time you can just talk your way out of it. That's mostly because the teacher who manages that is a big pushover though. Oh, and teachers will rarely do anything if a student is late.

but up until HS, it's mostly not the childs fault. They essentially get blamed for the parent :/

It's kinda similar here in Malaysia, though I went to a Chinese private school and not a public school. Only we don't write lines, we are asked to write a 500 word report. Lonelynight

they do that in a lot of tv shows nowadays
