Also make sure to drink water when you are weightlifting or doing cardio, or working out in general. It makes me cringe when I see people working out, without a water bottle, you need to be hydrated. If you want something to help you regain electrolytes during a workout as well, there is a powder you can put in your water called Emergen-C, I have one packet in my water every workout because it keeps me going and hydrated.

http://www.emergenc.com/

Here is there main site, make sure to not put the packet in too much water or it will taste bad, the emergen-c tastes better if it is in a smaller ammount of water. You also don't have to do my full workout plan all at once, just work your way up to it.

jpph

sounds like a BS scam. all you need is water. natural foods are the best, steroids, protein shakes etc are pretty much all bad i believe.

I drink that stuff all the time when I'm sick. It really boosts my immune system.

I would say my info is pretty proper right now.

I also forgot to add that it is best to start weightlifting before you are ino 20 or so because the muscle you put on between ages 18-20 is more apt to stick with you and you will get better results for working out later in your life. Mainly due to the high amount of Testosterone you will have at those ages and you want your body used to building muscle and working out.

If you want a good book on exercise in General check for Bill Pearls book "Getting Stronger" it has huge exercise plans for tons of sports and a countless number of great exercises.

a matter of preference i suppose. i took cytogainer for about a month and noticed a change in muscle mass, but i also started getting some love handles, so i stopped with that, lol. eating more meat (lean meats) throughout the day will give you the same result as protein shakes. bruce lee also experimented with protein shakes, but stopped taking them later on in life. me, personally, i can't stand the taste.:P

True, but you won't get near as much from weightlifting without doing protein drinks. As far as the taste goes I know what you mean, but my muscles come first. :D Although the champion nutrition protein doesn't taste bad, just put it in milk or some sort of juice or blend it into a shake. I personally put it into "Green Machine", it is made by the company "Naked Juice." You can find it at healthfood stores. Protein shakes aren't what make you lose muscle, they just give you the protein for your muscle when you weightlift. The reason I have Whey Protein before my workout is because it goes straight to the muscle to help it build. Sure eating healthy helps you lose weight and get lean, but combine that with weightlifting and proteins before/after your workout and you will speed up the process and build muscle.

You are forgetting that a lot of the people in the military especially any of the special forces do a lot of weightlifting. Weightlifting gives endurance, burns fat by replacing it with muscle, all the fat just feeds the muscles growth. Cardio won't be abel to beat the results of weightlifting.

VisigothSaxon

"Cadio won't be able to beat the results of weightlifting." In what sense? The Army puts a heavy emphasis on cardio, because that's more important to what the Army does.

You will not gain any real muscle by doing pushups. You will burn fat and tone up though. Start lifting weights. Buy your own though. It's wildly cheaper than a gym membership.

Pirate700
I agree with this, except I'd phrase it differently. You make it sound like pushups don't do anything. You won't get ridiculously large muscles by doing pushups, but you'll gain a significant amount of muscle mass from it. You'll hit a limit where it won't make you gain any more muscle at a point, but it's not like it hardly has any effect.

In the sense that Weightlifting gives you muscle, cardio doesn't really, Weightlifting gives you endurance as well as cardio(especially doing high reps like me), Weightlifting burns fat as well as cardio. Cardio is really just for endurance and fat burning, but weightlifting gives you more strength and muscle. I am not against cardio, I said for cardio I do Kick-Boxing and Jump Roping.

So true. $1000 weight set >>>> 1 year gym membership

Except you don't need to spend no where near that amount..

you make some good points. protein shakes will definitely help you build muscle faster, though slow and steady is also good. i eat 6 meals through out the day, but rarely eat any red meats. perhaps once a week. i eat a lot of fish, and drink a lot of milk. it's also important which type of exercises you do. bench press, deadlift, and squats build mass around the body, rather then isolated muscle exercises such as bicep curls.

I'm sure it's been said, but cardio would be best to lose fat. Incorporate some weight lifty/body weight workouts with that and you'll start slimming down/buffing up.

I do all those execpt for squats because they compress your spine and stunt your growth. I make sure to workout every muscle each week, thus making your muscles proportioned. For example, if your sholders are stronger than your back you will kind of hunch over and look like a nuckle dragger, but if they are proportioned you will stand nice and straight.

Thats a good point, without iron you are going to have trouble building blood along with many other things. Unless if you are drinking iron supplement type stuff.

VisigothSaxon

So, weightlighting does the things that weightlifting does better than cardio does the things weightlifting does? That doesn't really justify a "lifting beats cardio" statement.

You aren't getting it, Weightlifting does everything cardio does, but more, and depending on how intense or hard your workouts are, it will also be more beneficial than just cardio. Did I ever say don't do cardio, I simply said Weightlifting has more benefits and it does. Again a couple good cardio exercises is Kick-Boxing, Martial Arts, Jump Rope, and so on.

You can also get more cardio type benefits when weightlifting if you give yourself about 10 seconds of rest inbetween exercises and by doing high reps such as 25.

If somebody all ready said this before hand sorry but I have a question concerning push ups to. Is there any problem doing them every day or should you take a day off? I have always heard that doing them every day is fine but I looked on the internet and some people said to have a every other day routine.

Push-ups and other own bodyweight type stuff is fine for every day. Abdominals can also be worked out every day as well, even if you are doing weighted crunches or cable crunches. If you are extremely sore, it is up to you to give yourself a day of rest. Handstand push-ups, and one handed push-ups are the hardest for push-ups, but will give you the best results. If you want to just do push-ups, make an effort to work up to doing those.

Push ups and pull ups are probably the 2 best exercises to do to build up some strength and stamina in your upper body. O and also try to vary the push ups, wide grip, diamonds etc.. you can even use a chair for some leverage to work out your top portion more.

I have some doubts that just lifting is healthier for your than just cardio.

EDIT: If somebody's heart rate is going much of anywhere from lifting, then they're in really bad shape.

I saw a special on steroids and they talked about how anyone can make their own "supplement". The guy filled pills with flour and made his own labels and starting selling it, they say you don't need FDA approval so most of them are BS. IDK my brother still drinks some of those and he is also on roids :?

If you are trying to lose weight the best option is running. You don't really need weights for anything unless you want to become huge. Tons of exercises you can do at home to get toned up and in shape.

Your kidding right, on that edit? It doesn't make sense, but are you saying that you can't raise your heartrate or become fatigued from weightlifting? You have obviously never done what I am talking about, where you don't give you body rest to catch your breath. I would like to see you try that without raising your heartrate, do reps of 25 heavy or reps of 10 heavy as possible with minimal cheating. I bet you wouldn't be able to keep up with me in the Gym, you probably couldn't even make it through my workout with a normal amount of rest. Again, I never said to do just lifting, If I had the option of the two I would pick weightlifting because I believe it is surperior. I think mostly weightlifting with cardio thrown in, is the best set up.

The problem I have with running is that it is hard on the joints. Thats why I do kick-boxing and jump roping instead, because I can be lighter on my feet and it is less impact.

Drinks some of what.

Champion Nutrition is legit and really good, so someone who is serious about weightlifting would probably use it, steriods have nothing to do with it.

Emergen-C is also legit and really good for any type of exercise because it gives you back electrolytes as you lose them from sweating.

I don't think sprinting is bad. Jogging, however, can be taxing on the joints (I learned that the hard way).

Maybe if you are eating fatty, poor qaulity red meat. I personally eat more turkey rather than chicken since a lot of chicken has all that horrible stuff added to the meat or the meat is of poor quality in general. Anyway, you aren't getting iron from chicken and fish, iron comes from the red meat, like lamb and beef.

I wouldn't say it is a myth. The only way to have it not do this is by changing the form of the squat so it doesn't compress the spine and not going down all the way and doing what is called a Half-Squat, doing less weight also helps, but anyone that does squats does a lot of weight, goes all the way down, and uses a form that compresses the spine. For example if you have the weight rest on your chest it help protects the spine, if the weight rests on your shoulders it will compress the spine. I still don't do squats because of this, I do a leg press machine instead, that doesn't compress the spine.

I think most meat is okay as long as you prepare it by yourself. Store brand stuff is iffy.

Of course. However, if you had to do one or the other, it seems cardio would be better for you, like, you'd live longer. I'll have to get some more educated opinions on this.

I think most meat is okay as long as you prepare it by yourself. Store brand stuff is iffy.

I get my meats from Jimbo's, Wholefoods, and Trader Joes

All of them sell mostly healthy and organic foods.

I have some doubts that just lifting is healthier for your than just cardio.

Palantas

The best thing to do is to have a mix of both.

Of course. However, if you had to do one or the other, it seems cardio would be better for you, like, you'd live longer. I'll have to get some more educated opinions on this.

I'd be inclined to agree actually. However, building muscles and consequently, becoming stronger also helps you live longer.

You are still missing the fact that you naturally get cardio when weightlifting. If you do a minimal rest workout or a high rep workout you are going to get some insane edurance and cardio. Most importantly Weightlifting builds a nice powerful healthy heart.l I am going to live nice and long thank you, sticking to my Weightlifting and my cardio on the side such as jump roping and kick boxing.

Edit: I also will often do 10 minutes of jumproping before I start my weightlifting workout.

If somebody's heart rate is going much of anywhere from lifting, then they're in really bad shape.

VisigothSaxon

It doesn't make sense, but are you saying that you can't raise your heartrate or become fatigued from weightlifting? You have obviously never done what I am talking about, where you don't give you body rest to catch your breath. I would like to see you try that without raising your heartrate, do reps of 25 heavy or reps of 10 heavy as possible with minimal cheating.

It'll go up a little, but not enough to matter. The increase from my heartrate while lifting is insignificant when compared to my heartrate while running. Are you telling me you do get winded while lifting?

I bet you wouldn't be able to keep up with me in the Gym, you probably couldn't even make it through my workout with a normal amount of rest.

VisigothSaxon

And I bet I'd lose you on a five mile run, or leave you way behind on a 25-mile ruck march. Oh wait, I don't bet any of that, because I've never met you.

Yeah, you're going to live nice and long doing both. That doesn't exactly make you a viable control group, does it?

EDIT:

Guys who just lift can't run or endure long movements for crap. I've seen this for years. It's great that you have a well-rounded workout, but don't pretend you can just sit in the gym lifting, and you'll be able to even come close in endurance to a guy who runs recreationally.

eating excessive amounts of red meat is bad for the heart. i get my protein from chicken and fish. from time to time though i'll eat a cheeseburger.

VisigothSaxon

Maybe if you are eating fatty, poor qaulity red meat. I personally eat more turkey rather than chicken since a lot of chicken has all that horrible stuff added to the meat or the meat is of poor quality in general. Anyway, you aren't getting iron from chicken and fish, iron comes from the red meat, like lamb and beef.

all red meat is high in fat. ask any doctor, they'll tell you eating red meat everyday is detrimental to your health.

Lol you still aren't getting it. Yes you can get winded during a weightlifting workout along with your muscles getting generally burned out, heres how. You give yourself about 10 seconds in between exercises this means your heart rate doesn't have time to slow down, thus you continue to breath more, and if you keep it up your muscles will be burning and you will be pretty winded. Take note, you must also be doing challenging weight as well or high reps or low reps as well. You aren't getting more benefits than me, by raising your heartrate really high. I have an insane ammount of endurance from my weightlifting alone, along with a ton of muscle endurance due to the high reps(a lot of people can't do reps of 25 heavy), plus I get the extra endurance from jump roping and kick-boxing.

Problem solved, you can eat everything if you burn it off weightlifting.

Lol, you are wrong to believe that people that do mostly weightlifting have no endurance at anything else, I can run just fine, I choose not to, because it is hard on the joints. I used to be in Track and Field and I was a really good long distance runner.

Before we go any further, let me ask you this...

I have an insane ammount of endurance from my weightlifting alone...plus I get the extra endurance from jump roping and kick-boxing.

VisigothSaxon

How do you know you have an insane amount of endurance from your weightlighting, when you also do dedicated cardio and martial arts? Have you ever tried cutting out one or the other for six months or a year and evaluated how your fitness changed?

EDIT: Formatting. Let me also say, that I agree with most of the stuff you've said in this thread, just not the part about lifting turning you into a cross country runner.
