It was the best thing to do. Those tumours would only have caused her pain and discomfort. I've had a dog put down, it'sa horrible experience, but it's the best thing you can do for the animal, as watching them suffer is devastating to.

[QUOTE="Zyrokin"]A question of ethics. Really... You seem like Hitler if you say "I'm willing to kill my own mother, if she lives in pain by the time she's 80", but it's alright to put your dog to sleep when its dog years are adding up to about the same. You're playing God with human lives, who can speak and fend for themselves, so that's why a lot of people see it as wrong. Personally, I'd have a hard time doing it to my family, but if it was their wish..I've often wondered why we don't do the same for humans that are in the same kind of shape. Merely curious.

Oh yea, I meant if a human chose to be put to sleep. If they were in extreme pain, and were terminal. Why hop em up full of drugs that probably will only make them mildly comfortable at best. I don't think we can actually put a person to sleep per say at all.
I guess it was for the best, but I can't help but feel like I'm a murderer, but it's whatever. Nothing can be done so I guess I need to hope for a doggy heaven. It's hard being agnostic in these times, but I hope all dogs do go to heaven and that it exist.

I wish we could. My grandmother could have been spared from having a slow and painful death that we only could watch and do nothing about.

Dogs get reincarnated into other animals or even humans.
It's tough losing a friend and a family member, even if they were an animal. I lived for nearly thirteen years with my dog, and I miss him every day. My parents were so grief-stricken they got him burned, and we got his ashes in the backyard now. We have a new puppy who is very similar in nature and character like my old dog, so I like to think he's a reincarnation. They even share coat colour :lol:I guess it was for the best, but I can't help but feel like I'm a murderer, but it's whatever. Nothing can be done so I guess I need to hope for a doggy heaven. My parents have some friends, where one of their parents is dying slowly of cancer. She's so healthy, but the cancer just won't go away. It's spread to most of her body, and she's in constant pain. All the doctors can do for her is take the pain away with medication... In a case like hers, I'd say its best to 'put her down'.As for putting animals to sleep, I would use a bullet instead, maybe have someone else do it if it's been in the family for a while. Cheap and effective.
I'm sorry for your loss. Pets are more than just pets. They become a part of your family. You and your family did the right thing. She could have started having seizures, loss of bowels and serious pain from the tumors. I know it's hard, but you will always have your memories of her.

If the person wants to be, I don't know if I see the problem.

definately not a murderer, if one of my cats were in alot of pain and no vet could prevent an agonising death without putting them to sleep well...honestly i'd chose to put them alseep...but a moment of having to do that would rip me to pieces.
eventually you will want to get another dog, not just to replace the one you had to put asleep but you obviously were pashionate about caring for her, so eventually a puppy can lift the spirit:)
sorry man, this is why i don't wanna own a pet really, you get so attached to it, it becomes like your son or your brother or best friend then when it gets to that old age which is way quicker for animals then us humans, it hurts to see them in pain because you grew up with them

That's like saying don't make friends because they'll die one day, or don't try to find a girlfriend because she might dump you. You need to add all the positives and the negatives.
It sure is terrible, to be killing animals but some need to be put out of there misery. What if you were suffering from some incurable sickness and it would be a slow, painful death, would you live through the pain till your death, or be put out of your misery?

I concur. Plus, I would rather have those millions of enjoyable memories with a pet and a have to go through their death, rather than never experience them at all. I guess if you have never tried it, you don't know what you are missing.
I have been through this twice in my life and it was not easy either time.
The first dog we had to put down had been there with me since I was a year old. He unfortunately got to the point where he was blind and almost completely deaf and began walking into walls at times. We went and gave him a last meal the night before the euthanization where we sat him up in a chair and gave him a steak meal on one of those living room trays. We took pictures but I don't have them in digital form.
Anyways, they went and gave him a dose strong enough to bring a dog 3 times his size down and IT DIDN'T WORK! They had to give him a second shot for him to finally go to sleep. We actually brought his body home and our other two dogs got very somber when they saw the body. We buried him in the backyard at our old house in a casket.
About 5 years ago we had to put down another dog of ours. That was the last time I cried actually. Her situation was much more sudden. We woke up one day to find our dog unable to walk. Her back legs had completely gone out on her. She had already been pretty obese too because of a thyroid condition she had and her size really made it impossible for her to move around. Definitely wasn't any easier going through it a second time...
I still think it is the humane thing to do though. There are things worse than death after all.
As for euthanasia on humans, I can actually understand the practice of assisted suicide but it is very touchy. People need to be in a clear state of mind to make such a decision and also need to be kept from making any rash decisions to get out of temporary pain.
Thing is though most people have NO IDEA the condition some people are kept alive in. I work at a nursing home and it is flat out depressing seing the condition some people are in. To have to be hooked up to a bunch of machines just to live out an extremely painful, bed-ridden existence in some health facility. I just couldn't imagine living like that....
You killed your dog and I'm sorry for your loss. It was the humane thing to do though. So you should feel good about that at least.
It's funny, because we can put animals to sleep without their consent yet we can't do the same for humans WITH their consent. Meh I don't care though, live a slow painful death or kill it quickly? I think I'll just let it live till it dies on its own.

depends on what country you live in. In my country you can under some circumstances.

Sorry for your loss. But you did the right thing. If you are going to have a dog in your life, you must accept that you will most likely be required to do them that last big favor and send them on to their next life, whatever that may be.
Give yourself some time to heal then go to the pound and rescue another pup from meeting its fate for no other reason than no one wants it.
I think it was Will Rogers who said "If dogs don't go to heaven, then I don't want to go there either. I want to go where the dogs go when I die."
Your cat got the HIV....did it share needles?I had to to it about 18 months ago. My kitten was diagnosed with FIP (HIV for cats), and there was really nothing I could do. You look at the animal, and see how uncomfortable they are, and it sucks. You did the right thing. As stated above, they don't know that you're helping them out, but you're doing them a huge favor. And, you're saving yourself more grief down the road.
