Caliber is only part of the equation. The powder determines the force fired at.

Alot more than caliber has to be taken into consideration, such as what Luke said, the amount of gunpowder and the type of round used.

It is the power behind the projectile more than the size of it. I would venture to guess that a revolver shoots at a much faster fps than a colt, and a magnum even faster.

Isn't the .45 Colt a blackpowder cartridge? The .45ACP is the traditional cartridge adopted for the 1911 and the Thompson submachine gun. ACP stands for Automatic Colt Pistol. Also, there's been the .45 GAP - Glock Automatic Pistol which is considered to be about the same as the .45ACP but with a shorter casing to make it slightly more compact thus allowing it to fit into a smaller magazine, and therefore into a smaller grip. You need to look at diameter, mass, and muzzle velocity.

Another one is that the .50BMG is currently an amazingly powerful firearm, and it even owes its origins to the old German anti-tank rifles of World War I.  John Browning was supposedly inspired by that round and it remains one of the most powerful cartridges to not be considered a cannon.  However, many old military muskets were much larger than .50 caliber; however the bullets were not that massive and the propellents were primitive and could not accelerate the bullet to the speeds capable in the 20th century by the invention of smokeless powder.

The .45 acp round is hardly a "piece of crap." It has incredible stopping power for a handgun round. That said, the reason a .45 magnum round is more powerful has to do with the amount of powder behind it, which gives the projectile more velocity. Since force is a factor of mass, but velocity SQUARED, ultimately the velocity of a bullet plays a larger role in its stopping power than its size. This is why rifle rounds have more stopping power even though many are smaller in diameter than handgun projectiles.

Look at this picture for some context. Everythign above the seam is the bullet/projectile. Everything below that is the cartridge, which houses all the powder/propellant.

This is why the world (including me) is sometimes a little scared of the great and fabulous USA. Do they teach this in school.
