I'm sorry, but Stevel Seagal does Aikido, and he's in movies, so it must be effective.

Actually, Steven Seagal is very good. I find it great to read people's posts on how Aikido is ineffective when Steven Seagal, a 7th degree black belt in Aikido, has taught UFC fighters. I guess some part of that martial art is effective.

He didn't teach them anything, but give some hints how to perform a kick better they already knew better. Steven Seagal doesn't have any legit fighting record either. At least Jean Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris have a legit full contact background. If you open up a book about Karate or Aikido, it assumes that the attacker will attack you a certain way or that the one assaulting you is a moron. In the early days of the UFC where clothes were allowed and were there was almost no rules, the Karate and Kung Fu guys were getting their butts handed to them by wrestlers, kickboxers and Sambo practitioners. Being in films is not an indication on how effective it is. Judokas generally perform very well in MMA bouts and Vale Tudo. Yet when was the last time you saw an action film with Judo?

Clearly, you and I watched different videos.

Against machineguns, I would recommend mortars.

Sound plan. After all, infantry win firefights, tanks win battles, and artillery wins wars. As for the OP. Don't take defensive based martial arts. Letting your opponent dictate what you're doing is a surefire way to lose. You should take a martial art that focuses on the offensive.

Do you think it's impossible to use a defense offensively?

Goldfinger.

So one film where Judo is just there in a short scene and not an entire film based on it? If you take Kickboxer it's mostly entirely centered around Muay Thai. Flashy kicks sells tickets a Judo throw doesn't.

The Bourne movies definitely have Judo, although it tends to be informal and in the context of its common use in Krav Maga.

If you have bad eyesight, I dont think anything style of martial arts will help you. Get a bodyguard or just deal with.

It won't help you if you want to get into a street fight, but it can still help if you just want to break the arm that grabs you and run.

Learn how to use echolocation. There are some totally blind mountain bikers who ride that way.

go with judo...aikido is mostly for exhibitions...seriously you wouldnt believe me if I tell you how many "aikido experts" tried to knock me down...its just a fantasy martial art, it relies on the other person standing completly still as the attacker makes his move...and we all know there will be no thief (or anyone trying to attack you) who will sit still as you grab his hand. really, aikido doesnt work for self defense unless its heavily modified.

I don't have them. I just came across them a while ago. I'm sure they're still on the net, somewhere.

I doubt it. There are some people here who are fitness nerds and martial arts nerds. Seagal is like, 60. Hard to Kill he is not. :D
