I really am not sure at all why either side of the debate is so hellbent on calling or being called a specific term. Honestly, No black person has ever asked me to refer to them as "African-American." But if one was to do so, I wouldn't mind. Why does it really matter to you what they wish to be called? I never really understood either side of this argument.
It just stuck me walking home today, isn't it a little weird that it's considered a sort of cultural taboo to call somebody not in africa african or black, yet we call whites whites, asians asians, and white's european. not european american, asian american, australian american or anything like that. i suppose it's some sort of lingering reminder of slavery and all that, but it seems like with slavery and racism mostly gone we shouldn't be yelled at for saying african or black....

You better call me, Germanic American! That's what I tell all non "whites" to call me. Two can play at that game.
Well i'm Serbian, so i'd prefer to be called Serbian rather then Serbian American or something if i ever came to the United States. So i never found anything wrong with the term black, i have black friends who'd prefer to be called by it.
I personally think it is an improper term. There are white people from Africa. Vandalvideothere was actually a story a while ago about a white african-american applying to an african-american college where he was declined. he took it to court and won since they declined him for being white. he met the all the criteria of an african-american for the school tho :P
