This thread does not advocate putting images in this thread. That is against the TOS. You will be reported if you do.

This thread is to discuss the appropriateness or lack thereof of this event.

So, apparently there is a 'Everyone Draw Holocaust Day' facebook page that has been put up. I don't believe it is appropriate, however given the way 'Everyone Draw Muhammad Day' was acceptable, it makes it harder to justify against this. I am against both days because neither is truely about 'free speech'.

However, what I want to observe now is how this situation will be handled. On one hand, it will be interesting to see whether the media covers this. It will in turn be interesting to see how they react to it. In short, I want to see how closely this is looked at in comparision to the Muhammad one.

What are you thoughts?

who is the genius who came up with this idea? Lets see what is going to happen. According to freedom of speech and the arguments I heard about the Muhammad day, this should be 100% legal which is quiet disgusting if this is how things are. "I may not like it, but I can't stop you", lets see how this argument will hold.

anyway is this just on FB? is so then this topic is so fail.

People are allowed to draw images of the holocaust. Dozens of movies have been made about it - so it is obviously in the protected realm of free speech. As long as it doesn't advocate violence it is fine.

These people are just trying to create some heat. Draw Muhammad Day went nowhere, and I doubt this will go anywhere either, but it just shows how childish their ideals are if this is the best they can come up with to advocate free speech. I bet half of those numbskulls couldn't properly draw the holocaust if their mommy helped them.

I'm not sure you understand. They are not going to draw sympathetic pictures of the holocaust, which is what all these dozens of movies do. They will be mocking the holocaust.

I disagree. The event was covered quite significantly by the media and there was an underlining message that was trying to be drawn. Also, there are already plenty of images on there.

Draw Muhammad day was an act for the freedom of speech, this group is just missing the point entirely and just trying to be funny. This is actually disgusting.

The "mocking" of historic events is not prohibited, regardless of the number of people who died.

So is this under the exact context. In both cases you have people who are mocking what others consider to be sacred. This is just as much as an act of freedom of speech as the muhammad one was... under the same logic.

I never said it was. However, since you make the point, I disagree. Mocking or denying the holocaust gets you arrested and thrown in jail in Europe. Here, it can ruin you career.

Afaik, Facebook is a US domain. It is up to the posters to determine the impact it could have on their career. It is still protected speech. That said, we have to remember that Facebook is a private domain, and as such, they can remove whatever content they choose. First Amendment rights protect freedom of speech in regards to what the government dictates you can and can't say, not a private entity.

Ok. If this is a counter-argument to something I said, I don't see it. However, yes, what you said is true... but I don't get the relevance. Facebook is just the meeting point...

It's not protected. I used Europe as an example. Once again, you can get arrested there for mocking the Holocaust or if you deny it. Here there is a social prohibition of it. So yes, I still disagree. You're arguing that Facebook can do whatever it wants within the bounds of US law. However if a European is caught on facebook writing holocaust stuff, they can get in trouble. Also Facebook is the meeting point, just like the Muhammad page was. What facebook removes or does not remove is irrelevant, since just as the Muhammad page, it can be recreated.

I'm not sure why you keep missing my point. The fact that facebook is an American site is irrelevant given that it is only a meeting point. Yes, we are legally protected to protest the Holocaust in the USA. However, outside of that exact statement, no... "it is not protected" in general.

People can draw whatever they want, wether you like it or not really, just gotta deal with it like a mature adult and don't let it bother you..

There are more things going on than a drawing in this world.

People can't have it both ways

Either you support everything or you attack everything, you cannot pick and choose what's acceptable and what is not

There's no way to say "what is worse" when it comes to these things, they're both offensive and at the same time they're also ripe for criticism and mockery.

The way you deal with it is to view the ones you agree with and not view the ones you don't, any steps beyond that is wrong and then you're the bad person

This is in reaction to Draw Mohammed Day, obviously. But I don't get it... everyone's religion is mocked. But somehow one religion gets a super special protection that prevents anyone from mocking it? And so, when people do mock it, they mock a genocide out of retaliation? It's disgusting and in bad taste.

Depends if it was funny or not

If they're able to find humor in it and I see that humor too then by all means, go right ahead. Even if I didn't find the humor in it they still have a right to say whatever they want.

My Mom's dying of terminal cancer right now and some of the cancer jokes I've heard have cracked me up because they're honestly funny and make me laugh

It is legal. If someone wants to make light of the holocaust, then that is his or her right. On the flip side, one could draw images of the holocaust in order to draw attention to its horrors in the hope that such an event never happens again.

Freedom of speech is great. Someone can make a joke out of something while someone else can use it to make a statement.

Honestly, this whole "draw the whatever thing" sounds like a fight between 4 year olds. You'd think that adults would behave in a more mature fashion.

Firstly, I shall point out that as an American citizen, I am immune to European law as long as I am physically located in the United States of America.

Secondly, not all of Europe has the same laws. In Spain, for example, the holocaust does not get a special status under the law that overrides free speech. Don't paint Europe with overly broad brushstrokes. Not all of Europe has Germany's or France's laws.

They may not have been drawing supremely vile or offensive pictures of him, it's just that any picture of mohammed is considered offensive to muslims. You are not supposed to draw or portray him as that suggest idolatry.

Ummm no. The drawing originated from the Danish drawer who drew a picture Prophet Muhammad, clearly stating "Prophet". This was a direct dig at Prophet Muhammad. Funny how people are now sugar coating the situation

Prophet Muhammad has passed on and that didnt stop people drawing supremely vile and offensive pictures, why should this stop anyone drawing any offensive pictures of the holocaust? Tic for Tac

What hypocrisy? Every day is draw whatever you want day to me.

You see, I have the unlimited and ABSOLUTE right to draw whatever I want to draw. That is my right as an American.

If someone doesn't like that Americans have such absolute freedom of expression, then they should not frequent websites where many Americans express themselves.

I have freedom of expression and speech, and there isn't anything that you can do about it.

I wasn't sugar coating anything. . . . . I wasn't saying that it was something I agreed with. I think the whole draw whoever thing is ridiculous and the response is even more ridiculous. Sounds like 4 year olds fighting.

Actually we do not have absolutely freedom of expression and speech. There are certainly laws we are bound by, and you can be legally prosecuted. Try to destroy money or burn the flag in public, or even on your front lawn and put it on youtube. Let me know what happens.

Ok, so why are we debating? Let them draw the horrific pictures of the holocaust.

I dont agree with it either, i think its the stupidest thing of the decade, and its even more stupid that they made this a public thing too. Im not a supporter of neither the drawings and i certainly wont be a part of it. It is a bunch of wussies fighting over this "freedom of speech" and literally pushing the bounderies to insult each other. Its pathetic.

Agreed. The only thing I find interesting about this is the hypocrisy that is, quite frankly, blatant.

What are you talking about? Burning the American flag is, as a matter of fact, protected free speech.

As for destroying money...the actual money is property of the Federal Reserve, and you can't burn property that doesn't belong to you.
