Any more help than that, and she's on her own.

feminists are psychotic sexists who want to wipe men off the face of the planet.ImpliedBunny
Not all feminists are that. However, there exists a subset of feminists who base their ideology essentially on the social inferiority of males, and this particular article is definitely a propagation of that. The idea that a man cannot say hello without having a hidden motive, either sexual or in an attempt to dominate women in some social way, is basically a statement of male inferiority.
It's painfully funny to me because it seems that in that sense that they are in agreement with very extreme conservative religious folks who have said even on these boards that women must remain completely covered because otherwise men will end up violating them in some sense, as if the mere sight of an attractive woman would be too much for them to handle. Both of these positions presume a natural inability of men to behave themselves in social settings where women are present.

I don't think the author is suggesting that the greeting "hello" is inherently aggressive or that men should never say "hello" to a woman. I think what she's saying is that although "hello" is usually perceived as an innocent greeting, it can be just as harassing (through tone, body language, whatever) as, say, a wolf whistle. This puts women in an awkward position because there is an obligation to say hello back (don't want to seem rude), even though the intent might be less than friendly.

God forbid anyone have to say hello back. Just another excuse to be anti-social.
I agree that it's polite to respond to a friendly hello from a stranger. But it's not impolite to ignore verbal harassment - and yes, saying hello (with the right tone and attitude) can be verbal harassment.
ill take your word for it tc, i know better then to read a feminist article/blog, it just makes me rage, and i dont like raging :P

Be honest, a man would never say hello to a strange woman without a sexual motive.

First day at work I raped ten or so.
Hello is just a standard greeting that most cultures have all over the world. Its a way of introducing yourself. Where I come from I'm sayin hello to folks. Its just polite. That article really has no substance and is a rant of someone who doesn't understand much.
I also realised that there were some very well hidden invisible but powerful ultra-sexual undertones when I said "hello" to the females.
I now say "welcome" to people everywhere I go.mAArdman
That's even worse!

I was being honest from the get-go. I say hello to strangers all the time -- men and women, and I have no sexual motive.
me too. I hold the door open for men and women; the only difference is, men say "thank you" more often than women and don't give me a weird look. But, I guess this is the society we live in: we don't do anything nice for people unless we want to **** them
