So, I find it personally hard to understand why it is that people are so frantic over calling people by certain names.

I am white, however, I have a multitude of various racial friends, so in no way am I racist.

It annoys me however, when people consider it racist to call someone the derogatory form of negro, or to call a pakistani a 'paki'.

Why is it that these words are so frowned upon. It is okay to call british people 'brits' or americans 'yanks', but calling a pakistani person by the above way is considered highly offensive...why is that? The word itself is derived from the country from which those certain people are from, just like people from afghanistan are called 'afghans'...

Is it purely that certain words for some reasons have developed connatations of animosity towards others of different racial backgrounds?

The whole 'name calling' thing is made worse when, for example, a black person is well within their right to call another black person a negro, but if a white person says it, its highly racist; these words are thrown around so casually, that the meaning behind them is gone. Calling someone a negro(in its more offensive way) was the ultimate insult, whereas now, it's deemed to be acceptable by so many.

Racial problems just confuse me, as sometimes, within a race, the very name calling that can be considered so offensive from another race, is deemed to be acceptable from within...

/rant.

wow. you obviously don't know the history of the n word. the reason that yanks isn't offensive, is the same reason krauts(or jerry) for the germans isn't offensive.

It is not acceptable at all. It is alright for one black person to say to another as friends but you cannot call someone that otherwise.

Oh really? I fail to see where I've racially insulted anyone. I have friends from ethnic backgrounds, and it doesnt matter what colour skin they are.

Id just like to know how racial slurs have progressed SO fast.

That's what I mean! A black person can use that term to another without any regards as to what it means - its acceptable within that race to do so.

Personally, Id never think to use it.

Being in a school where the majority of people are white, I cant say I have learned these kinds of things. The UK outer city schools are nowhere near as racially diverse as some.

Its a shame if you cant talk about that sort've thing then; racism is a touchy subject, but not THAT touchy that you shouldnt be able to talk about it in order to understand it better.

It's because whitey is pretty much backed into a corner in America's case. If you're white and you say black, you're racist. Even if you're talking about coffee or an ink cartridge, it's racist. The irony: white people are the ones who have invented that overly racism thing in an attempt to redeem their ancestors's sins. How about we all just forget what happened, shut up, and try to make this a better place to live, OK? I'm sure we can agree on that as a species.

But the majority of the time, if a black person says it, from personal experience, its almost as if they say it for the sake of saying it. Granted, there are so many people that think (within that race) that it is unacceptable to say that as they understand what it really means and know that it shouldnt be used regardless or who you are or what race you fall into.

Yeah, I agree. I do think that racism has been escalated by whites also. Remembering the past is okay, but to dwell on it is pathetic. Whats done is done, and cant be changed.

Just because they are deemed a racist doesn't make it so. Words are poweless unless you give them power. Instead of trying to control language they should concentrate on real racial issues in the community. And not bring the heat done on some white girl who sings the "N word" is some some song on TV.

Exactly. I'm biracial: half black and half white, and I don't think you understand black history all that well. It's not who says it, it's the intentions of who says it. Some kids at my school pop off the N word at me just because they think they can get my goat with their immature view of the black population. I personally don't think anyone should be concerned with using the N word. I'm part black and I have never used the N word around anyone. I have lots of interacial relationships, and I can carry a conversation without resorting to derogatory language. Why are you so concerned anyway? Did you call someone the N word and upset them? Did someone call you something negative and come to the conclusion that you are racist? The N word is just like the F word. If you're among friends and just joking around, it isn't going to offend you. But the same word from someone who you don't like, or vice versa, could spark . Bottom line, don't use the N word. It's not necessary to continue relationships with "minorities". I have established and held solid relationships with people of all races, and I haven't bothered my friends and they haven't bothered me about it. Like I said, I'm part black, I don't find it offensive to use such derogatory terms, I find it STUPID to use such terms. Do a little research on Dr. King, Malcom X, etc. Anyway, that's my two-cents. Peace!

how are double standards stupid?

for instance, you wouldn't put a woman on the front lines of a battle ground. for the vast majority, that's just plain wrong.

men and women and different races ARE DIFFERENT.

some things about the double standard are bad, i agree, but on a whole it's a necessary thing.

Like I said, I'm part black, I don't find it offensive to use such derogatory terms, I find it STUPID to use such terms. Do a little research on Dr. King, Malcom X, etc. Anyway, that's my two-cents. Peace!

Im assuming youre talking to me; hard to tell with quotes.

It is bad when words can in one context be somewhat harmless yet in another be malicious, but I guess thats just human nature.

There is a difference between calling someone something because of WHERE they come from, and Calling someone something because of WHAt there nationality. When a Person of African desent takes a once-rasist term, and uses it to indicate other African Desendants, i look at it as calling that person "oppressed" or "mistreated" or to use the N-word as reverse empowernment, taking a bad thing, and using it in a non-bad way. Respect, Brother, Respect.

It is not acceptable at all. It is alright for one black person to say to another as friends but you cannot call someone that otherwise.

how are double standards stupid?

for instance, you wouldn't put a woman on the front lines of a battle ground. for the vast majority, that's just plain wrong.

men and women and different races ARE DIFFERENT.

some things about the double standard are bad, i agree, but on a whole it's a necessary thing.

mistervengeance

Double standards encourage inequality. That's what's wrong with them. Like the sexual double standard. I can tell my friends at work of the hot ass I got last night, but as soon as a woman enters the conversation, I'm suddenly at no-sex-camp. Equality has its downsides, you know. Choosing what you want to be equal in and what you want an advantage in is f*cked up.

That's what I mean! A black person can use that term to another without any regards as to what it means - its acceptable within that race to do so.

Personally, Id never think to use it.

Actually, that would be an ignorant black man.

nah i would have to disagree as a black person in this country i believe that NO one should use this word NOT EVEN BLACK PEOPLE im black and i don't use this word neither should any1 else and for all those black people who thinks its ok to use it because we have "reclaimed" it is simply wrong if they could look in the dictionary and the historical factor of this word they would never use it

i think it was right to get her out because it should not be tolerated, people always say well if black people use it why cant i say it well the reason is those black people eg rappers thugs etc dont REPRESENT all of our views as black people and most black people dont use it the only ones you see using it are the "thugs in the ghetto"

this is what i wrote in the UK dicussion board on the topic of racism in BB and the N word

Well said, Eragon_11. This is a known double standard both true and firm. I'm asian and me and my friends are always joking around with asain people jokes. I say abouthalf the jokes.I just think that some people just have to learn to be looser. Don't take everything to heart otherwise you will not be able to survive in this world.

It use to but I don't really think it has the same meaning today, although it is still a stupid word. But technically anyone can be classified as a N word.
