[QUOTE="WildLIkeChild"]I didn't know you could change the meaning of music to fit what you want. :) Something being classified as music is objective, not subjective.spierdalaj666

i don't think that i am. yes, one could say that dripping water may be music to some but that falls outside the broad consensus of what defines music. i was simply arguing that a drum beat is not music per se, since at least in my opinion it does not draw upon many of the tonal concepts of music. Maybe it's just the way i think or maybe i'm simply elitist, either way to each his own.

Comparing rap to dripping water is laughable. Explain what the broad consensus defines music as? Music is basically defined as having rhythm, melody, and harmony and rap songs have all of that.

Are funk, jazz, soul, and rock not music then either? Rap samples from all of them...

first, i wasn't comparing rap to dripping water, i was suggesting that to some dripping water or waves crashing against the rocks are melodic, but most people wouldn't define it as music.

when did i say that jazz, funk soul or rock are not music? And as a side point, sampling someone else's music is sort of sad don't you agree. Why can't people make their own music without "borrowing" it.

Sampling has been around for years. It's the simple act of borrowing a piece of music and remixing it, or using it in a creative way.

To put it simply, it's like remaking a film or writing a book from the point of view of a different character.

[QUOTE="TallicaFan2005"]The only music thta sucks is metal. Metal is the worst piece of crap invented (Metallica sucks too...don't ask..) I enjoy hip hop....Lil' Wayne is my favorite...Love the new T.I. song too. makaveli2344

that just proves my point about how little you know, i don't think anyone would actually consider metalica to be metal.

i know that you're envious of people whose music actually requires skill to play, but it's ok.

Metallica is metal. I'm not sure either of you know much about music.

maybe in the 80s, sure.

TallicaFan2005. It Stirikes me as irony, how you say Metallica Sucks, yet, your username is TallicaFan. You Confuse me, dude.

Have you people never heard of sarcasm?

I dislike rap, and I honestly can't stand the new rap garbage. I don't think the new artists have any talent for what they do, but hey, just my opinion ^^

If you say rap isn't music, then you are saying that jazz, funk, soul, and rock aren't music because rap samples things from all of those genres.... put two and two together buddy, it's simple thinking.

You can be just as creative with a sample as you can with an instrument. Why should someone limit music to just playing on instruments, when there are others ways to achieve organized sound? You limit creativity when you confine the ways you can be creative. And it's not like rap doesn't use live instruments either, many producers like Dr. Dre, RZA, Dilla, and Black Milk play various instruments and you have groups like the Roots out as well....

all good points. If you look at my original comments, i was simply implying that a drum beat per se is not music. i do not recall stating that putting samples on top of of a drum beat isn't music.

as for sampling itself, i think that it's a bit foolish since it truly stymies creativity by reusing musical lines that have already been invented by someone else. what is so hard about writing a novel piece of music, i don't get it.

in any case, please let's not make this into an argument, i was simply expressing my opinion.

I can't stand rap. I think a great deal of it is mindless, stuff like "Pop Lock and Drop It," just to name one.

i used to like rap too but as i grew older my taste changed alot and now my favorite genre is metal and its been that way for years. i dont hate rap entirely though, i do listen to some rap like i enjoy project pat, bonecrusher, executioners, and a few others. i especially like it when rappers mix rock into thier music because it really sounds good then.

I'm a fan, but I can tell the majority of it has been going downhill for awhile. Now, there's some new guy Hurricane Chris taking over the radio with that stupid Ay Bay Bay song. I need to get my iPod fixed.

I don't hate it, but it's not for me. I don't know why so many people hate it when metal seems to be a much worse genre.
