[QUOTE="Orlando_Magic"][QUOTE="spierdalaj666"][QUOTE="WildLIkeChild"]I didn't know you could change the meaning of music to fit what you want. :) Something being classified as music is objective, not subjective.spierdalaj666
i don't think that i am. yes, one could say that dripping water may be music to some but that falls outside the broad consensus of what defines music. i was simply arguing that a drum beat is not music per se, since at least in my opinion it does not draw upon many of the tonal concepts of music. Maybe it's just the way i think or maybe i'm simply elitist, either way to each his own.
Comparing rap to dripping water is laughable. Explain what the broad consensus defines music as? Music is basically defined as having rhythm, melody, and harmony and rap songs have all of that.
Are funk, jazz, soul, and rock not music then either? Rap samples from all of them...
first, i wasn't comparing rap to dripping water, i was suggesting that to some dripping water or waves crashing against the rocks are melodic, but most people wouldn't define it as music.
when did i say that jazz, funk soul or rock are not music? And as a side point, sampling someone else's music is sort of sad don't you agree. Why can't people make their own music without "borrowing" it.
Sampling has been around for years. It's the simple act of borrowing a piece of music and remixing it, or using it in a creative way.To put it simply, it's like remaking a film or writing a book from the point of view of a different character.
