I can think of plenty of 3/10 movies, and this one wasn't even close. Each to his own I guess.3/10 It bored me and it was way too long.

Those scenes where they're taught how to beg are more grounded than the others. Like the scene where the kids eye is burnt out are not done with the hyperkinetic styIe. The humour from the earlier scenes has nothing to do with them. If anything it probably makes them more powerful because you're not expecting it. Its styIe adds a dream-like/fantasy quality to a lot of scenes, which I suspect is complimented by how artificial the game show is.
It shows how society shapes it reality by comparing and contrasting their upbringings and their fates - like being covered in feces, escaping fanatical attacks or forced to beg - with their later lives and goals, such as how Salim authority in his life by becoming a criminal and standing over others through physical force. Or how with Jamal he was just willing to take a chance for something he believed, even though people look down on him (working in a call center, by interrogated by the police, everyone believes he must be cheating)Even the city itself changes from a slum to a high rise metropolis.
Think of it as like a Dickens story of sorts.biggest_loser
Okay, but right after that "powerful" scene it goes back to its hyper and cheery style disdaining any effect it could have had and because of that, it seems to only to be added to give a thinly-veiled idea of importance and relevance in a rather simple story of a man's path to accomplishment; it touches up on these things but never seems to be effected by them. The characters' main strides and ideas of their positions never being changed or giving a hint of doubt, this diminishes a sense of humanity and the fall-back is a generic fairy tale told in modern times with a few tricks. It has been a while since I've seen so I am fuzzy on the finer points but I think I could sum it up easily: It's not my cup of tea.

I was also talking about the brother and other archetypes. I suppose all of them were suppose to be a bulldozer of a character for a certain mindset or position, but that didn't make for a compelling watch for me when put the overall style and progression by Boyle into account and the political allegory it overshadows. Though I should also add that I did find it to be a pretty enjoyable film, just nothing I would like to re-watch or discuss further.
[QUOTE="Nerd_Man"]9/10. I don't understand why so many people bash the film. I'm assuming because it is a Best Picture winner, it gives everyone a reason to call it overrated.ssj4_2004

Many films aren't one's cup of tea, but you won't hear as much hate for them. Why is it that Slumdog Millionaire in particular, and most other Best Picture films, seem to get so much hate?[QUOTE="Nerd_Man"]

I disliked the film before it was cool to dislike it. :P
Actually I did see it in theaters in mid/late December before it really took off/got the Oscar/Golden Globe nominations/wins.
