Reasons:
1) Poorly drawn (or traced). If you want to make it look better and more presentable, spend more time on it. Don't have time to make a good drawing? Then make time.
2) I dislike fan art. Draw something from life or from your imagination instead.
Helpful advice:
-Practice drawing more. The more you draw, the better you will get. Start out drawing things around your house. Sit down with pencil and paper, then render the **** out of whatever you're drawing. By that I mean draw what you see: Form shadows, cast shadows, highlights, etc. After doing that for some time you will start to understand how to give objects form in a 3D space. If you don't shade your drawings, they will look flat. Then later on you can go on to practice figure drawing, but let's start with objects first because that will be easier for you. Draw frequently, push your drawing skills, and you will get better with time.

1)Why is it poorly drawn?
2)OK, but your preferences hold no bearing on whether it's actually well done or not.
Do you have some examples that you have drawn, as you stated this is part of your job? I'd consider his drawing in the 7-8 range for what he's trying to acheive, but I'd like to see what you have in mind. A 1 out of 10 his is not.
6/10,your lining doesn't fit your subject,it would have been better if you had used more smooth lines.

While you did capture Shadow's image rather well, the drawing is a tad rough which is contrary to the hedgehog character design in Sonic where the characters are sleek and sharp. The drawing is hastily coloured in and shading is virtually non-existent and fanart mostly is very unoriginal, try create your own characters. Because art is truly about using your imagination.
Keep on drawing!
