Nick Cave, The Jam, Zoom, Incubus, The Clash, Ben Folds Five, Placebo, Radiohead, Muse, Editors, Interpol...Sharvie
Not a bad list...you're just missing one important ingrediant.:P
Røyksopp. A well known norweigan ambient/techno -ish band. Words don't really do them justice.
Here is a song you have probably heard:
Eple
A personal favorite: (Also, musicvideo is creepy as hell.)
What Else is There?
Also, their musicvideos are all totally sex. Check them all out!
And to balance things out, I will post some metal too.
I give you Neurosis! Experimental metal with hell of a good song-writing. Also, the vocals are awesome. Warning, long songs, though.

"What Else is There" is helped out by The Knife(an incredible band). Karin's voice is so...haunting.
Bullet for my valentine. They're my favorite band ^_^-Kirbyangel-*Looks at avatar and sig* Must...resist...urge....discrim...in.......e...m... Wait a second. They're an alright band.Till next time. B.T.W:Who's that in your sig?

That likely would be her. As in, pictures of herself.
If Bullet For My Valentine toned down the screamo vocals they'd be pretty good. They're kind of like Alexisonfire, but with guitar solos and without occasional deep lyrics.
As for recommendations:
-Explosions in the sky
-Wolf Parade
-The Knife
-The Unicorns
-Miles Davis
-The Mae Shi
-Horse the Band
-Dead Can Dance
-Broken Social Scene
-Tom Waits
Definitely Demilich. Link in my sig to dl their only album. They be technical death metal apparently
Um some others, Ensiferum, Therion, Cathedral, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Electric Wizard(start with the song Funeralopolis^_^), Lykathea Aflame, Kreator, Gorguts(album Obscura). I'll hold off more so you don't get overloaded:|

and by the way i noticed there were like 3 mars voltas...... in my personal opinion they are headache music, i got a couple of their cds cuz they were the starter band for the red hot chili peppers and after ten minutes i had to stop i just couldnt listen to them....kevster812
It took me like three months to get into TMV...it's an investment that pays off once you can appreciate their genius.

I'd hardly consider them genius. They're musically talented. Their lyrics tend to be filler for vocal texture, but whatever. Eriatarka's a hell of a song.
If you want to try something different I'd recommend checking out some IDM. Some notable artists are Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada and Squarepusher. Although pretty much anything released by Warp Records is great.
If you're checking out Autechre its best to start out with their early stuff (Amber, Incunabula, Anti EP, Tri Repetae) since their later stuff can be pretty extreme.

I love her voice. Thought she was only a guest singer. Not a whole band helping out.

Well, I think she's technically a guest singer, but I wouldn't be surprised if The Knife hung around during the production stage. There's hints here and there during the song that just sound more like the Knife than Royksopp. It could very well be the way Karin's voice contrasts with the backing music, though. Still, usually in collabs, ideas are bounced around.
Maybe I'm just really sad that the Knife is on hiatus for a while.
ISIS its metal but its for chillin out ,its fairly soft but its one of the best bands ever (similar to tool aparentlybut mutch mutch better)
or try DEFTONES it is soft mixed with heavy.
both bands are very melodic (especialy isis)and IMO acsesable by anyone who likes rock

I'd recommend Pelican to you, they are also part of Hydra Head (as is Isis), personally I think they wipe the floor with Isis.
You want something different you say? Well heres two that I think you would enjoy based on what you listed previously:
Risk-Megadeth (I know theyre metal, but give it a chance. This one's very different from the rest of their stuff.) I often play this record to friends who hate metal, and they say they like it, and them I'm like that was Megadeth. More often than not they are speechless.
Book Of Shadows-Zakk Wylde (Another metal guitarist, but this is actually a very light southern rock album)
