We have a lot of WAYR threads, but most are fiction. I love fiction, but I've been reading a lot of non-fic lately, just wondering what everyone liked as far as that goes.

I'm part way through Gary Vaynerchuck's Crush It! because he's ridiculously inspiring (little bit of language in there).

Pro wrestling biographies are always fun reads for me. If you don't have a lot of time, Cheating Life and Stealing Death by Eddie Guerrero is a good one, as is Adam Copeland's, but I can't remember the name of it right now. If you're looking for a longer read, Hitman by Bret Hart was excellent from what I read, but I never finished.

Because of the narrative style of TSP I usually refer to it as fiction. While highly philosophical, its like the Bible. Philosophies and the such wrapped up in a pretty cool story or two. That's why I went with BGAE. Was also gonna rec. The Anti-Christ, but nah.

Yeah, I guess you're right it does walk upon the line of fiction(depends on your reason for reading) unless you take it for a strictly philosophical piece. I agree, The Anti-Christ might be a bit much some some. Rene Descartes Meditations on First Philosophy is a very good read also.

I'm a big non-fiction reader. Anything I've read from these guys was very good.

  • Michael Lewis -- The Blind Side; Moneyball; Liar's Poker
  • Jon Krakauer -- Into Thin Air; Into The Wild; Under The Banner of Heaven
  • Jared Diamond -- Collapse; Guns, Germs and Steel
  • Malcom Gladwell -- Blink; The Tipping Point; Outliers
  • David McCullough -- Truman; 1776
  • Paul Krugman -- The Return of Depression Era Economics

All of those were great reads and highly recommended.

Malcolm Gladwell - Outliershttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outliers_(book)

Interesting topics in the book includes how/why someone like Bill Gates can become rich; why certain athletes do better than others, etc...

Lowlife by Simon Eddisbury is a good book. It's the story of some middleclass kid from the burbs in england who goes to prison for a petty crime and spends his time in there investigating the "underworld" and all the crimes that go on in england. Some of the people he talks to are mindblowingly immoral and it's interesting how they justify their crimes to themselves. Also it's pretty shocking the amount of serious crimes that do go on in england- people selling hand grenades and machine guns with infrared sights! Here's the link anyway http://www.johnblakepublishing.co.uk/e-store/LowLife.html

Papillon

It is basically the memoirs of Henri Charriere when he was in captivity in the French part of South America (forget what it's actually called) It's a true story, and it's very good.

Sams Teach Yourself TCP/IP in 24 hours was the last i read, it's pretty good if you're intrested in that sort of thing. Recommendations wise Weaving the Web - Tim Burners Lee and Masters of Doom - Davd Kushner are good.

The last good non-fiction book I read was Lowlife: Life in British Prisons With Drug Dealers, Gun Runners and Murderes by Simon Eddisbury. It was written by some surburban middle class kid who ended up in prison for whatever reason and interviewed a load of different types of criminals. He talks to people who were caught selling illegal guns and all types of different weapons and a guy who smuggled drugs through about four different continents. Here's what it has to say on Amazon anyway http://www.amazon.com/LowLife-British-Dealers-Runners-Murderers/dp/1844549607/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1284309222&sr=8-1

These are good. I'm also reading None Braver by Michael Hirsch. It's about Air Force PJs in the Afghanistan. These guys' training regiment is harder than any other branch of SOCOM because they have to go into the same situations that a SEAL would be in, only their job would be to rescue the SEAL lol
