i've decided to start reading more, but i'm not sure which authors to check out. is harry potter a good series to check out? i haven't seen any of the movies, but i'm kind of curious to see what all the fuss is about. i do have the fight club book, so i'm going to start with that, but i'm not sure where to turn to next. i'm 22 btw, any recommendations would be appreciated...

What kind of stuff you into to atleast narrow it down, fiction, non-fiction, religon, math, comps, and science?

if fiction than to kill a mocking bird was one that i finished although macbeth was a lil on the dry side.

if you like horror then stephen king or mabe what that other guy said before me.

Try the series from Piers Anthony called The Incarnations of Immortality or the Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway.

Everyone Poops.  Its an absolute white-knuckled, in-your-face thriller that pulls no punches. I'd give it 9 thumbs up.
The non-stop action will make you so tense you'll want to stab a panda and/or possibly punch a dolphin in his/her happy-go-lucky face.
One of the most original and enjoyable books I've read in a while is The Traveler by John Twelve Hawks.

One of the reviews in the cover sums it up pretty nicely without giving much away:

"Ferocious....An invigorating parable, with a cliff-hanger ending that cries out for future installments...There are traces of Star Wars, The Matrix, Kill Bill and Minority Report.  There are echoes of Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Joseph Campbell, Jeremy Bentham... Amazingly, this novel sustains a new voice even when is roots show."

Yeah, that's probably better than any description I would have come up with. ;)  I can't wait until he writes the second one.

The His Dark Materials series.(It doesn't have anything to do with masturbation or porn)

The Invisible Man was equally entertaining.

I think you are referring to the book Cell Anyway, Stephen King is indeed a good recommendation. I recommend The Dark Tower serie from this writer any time. 7 books, that will keep you busy for a while. :)

i strongly suggest reading anything Bukowski. he's an easy read, everyone knows him, and you can spark up an interesting conversation with people ten times smarter than you.

you should read POST OFFICE first, then branch out to his poetry. there is stuff on youtube that you can watch as well.

Depends a lot on what kind of books you like to read. Harry Potter is pretty good, they're worth a read. Mostly I read fantasy, but some authors I would recommend: C.S. Friedman, Melanie Rawn, Jacqueline Carey, Mercedes Lackey, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams. I could probably come up with more given some time to think, that's just off the top of my head. Oh, C.S. Lewis too...the Chronicles of Narnia are a must.

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, the tale of an immigrant in Chicago. It's shocking and gutwrenching. You'll look at everything differently. Just thinking about that book makes me incredibly happy to be wearing socks right now.

Also, Animal Farm by George Orwell. I found it much more enjoyable than 1984. Where Animal Farm was smart and fun to read (noting the common traits between pigs and politicians is always fun), 1984 made me feel utterly hopeless and horribly aware.

Anyways, I highly recommend those. :)

Yeah, it was an amazing book.  Have it on my shelf right now, thoroughly read and studied.  *chews on Beef Jerky*

My recommendation would go to:  Steven Erickson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series.  Great epic, brutal fantasy.

Can't go wrong with Harry Potter.

If you want a mature book try The Book of the New Sun.

Actually, Gates of Fire, Alexander: Virtues of War, Tides of War and The Last of the Amazons of Steven Pressfield.. they're masterpieces, and compared to the general crap.. They're modern Illiads.

Why is the Harry Potter series that... highly rated?

It's good but it's still aimed at a younger age, e.g the sophistication of it is.. minimal. I'm not saying it's bad, no by no means, but for an older audience there are better books (in my opinion).

i don't think it's so much that it's sophisticated writing (though the last couple i think have gone past the whole younger audience thing. could just be because the characters are older or because rowling realizes that so many older peopler read 'em, dunno). i love them because they're good books that i love reading and imagining, etc. and they definitely get people to read and i appreciate any book that does that, but i'm a future english teacher...lol

The best fantasy books ever written are not the Lord of the Rings books.  There exists a set of books that literally re-defines contemporary fantasy.

George R. R. Martin's, A Song of Ice and Fire

 1. A Game of Thrones
 2. A Clash of Kings
 3. A Storm of Swords
 4. A Feast for Crows

I can't desribe how much this series completely trumps series like Harry Potter, Salvatore, and the Wheel of Time in terms of depth, complexity, humor (the books are hilarious), and creativity.

Easily the best fantasy written in the last 20 years.  If you want a very gritty, adult-themed, novel that isn't afraid to inject themes that should be in fantasy, go for it.  You won't find better.

I read Backwood's by Tawni O'Dell recently and I liked it a lot.  It gets kinda weird near the end, though.
