The best fantasy books ever written are not the Lord of the Rings books.  There exists a set of books that literally re-defines contemporary fantasy.

George R. R. Martin's, A Song of Ice and Fire

  1. A Game of Thrones
  2. A Clash of Kings
  3. A Storm of Swords
  4. A Feast for Crows

I can't desribe how much this series completely trumps series like Harry Potter, Salvatore, and the Wheel of Time in terms of depth, complexity, humor (the books are hilarious), and creativity.

Easily the best fantasy written in the last 20 years.  If you want a very gritty, adult-themed, novel that isn't afraid to inject themes that should be in fantasy, go for it.  You won't find better.

Its not hard to be better then Salvator, the guy pumps out a book a month, no exageration.

Well... Harry Potter isn't a literary masterpiece by any means, but it's well-written and has some decent story and plot-twists. Read stuff from Asimov, Tolkien, Orwell, Vonnegut, Huxley, Bradbury, Dick and Card. Those are good authors.

The Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz is awesome, LOTR is a must, the dark tower series by Stephen King is very good.Guitarking411

Thank God someone else here knows about Odd Thomas!

The first book, Odd Thomas, is easily the best book I have ever read! The characters, especially Odd himself, are all very cool and entertaining. On top of that, the writing is great, and the story will keep you guessing!

The 2nd book, Forever Odd wasn't that great, but still worth the read.

I definitely like the 3rd book, Brother Odd, better than the 2nd, allthough I seriously doubt anything could compare to the 1st.

Oh and I must vouch for the Harry Potter series. The series just gets better and better (except I happen to like the 3rd book better than the 4th) and it has become much darker which has added to the quality of the books. The books do an excellent job of sucking you into thier world, which is probably why I like them so much!

Why is the Harry Potter series that... highly rated?

It's good but it's still aimed at a younger age, e.g the sophistication of it is.. minimal. I'm not saying it's bad, no by no means, but for an older audience there are better books (in my opinion).

If you like fantasy books, check out http://www.bestfantasybooks.com; there is a huge fantasy book recommendation list that should help you find some great fantasy books. Some person favorites I would recommend: George Martin's A Game of Thrones.

Errrr.... what types of books do you like lol? Okay, fine, I'll just list some... Oh, and, for the record, Harry Potter is not a good series-don't bother with it. My recommendations: For Whom the Bell Tolls (Ernest Hemingway), To Have and Have Not (Hemingway), Blood Meridian (Cormac McCarthy), No Country for Old Men (McCarthy), A Song of Ice and Fire series (George R. R. Martin), The Dark Tower series (Stephen King), The Shining (King), The Stand (King), Brave New World (Aldrous Huxley), Discworld series (Terry Pratchett), Great Expectations (Charles Dickens), The Count of Monte Cristo (Alexandre Dumas), The Grapes of Wrath (Steinbeck), Heart of Darkness (Joseph Conrad), The Iliad (Homer), The Odyssey (Homer), Dracula (Bram Stoker), and In Cold Blood (Truman Capote). Those should keep you going for a while :D.

You should try Ender's Game and it's sequels. The Discworld novels are always good as are the Edge Chronicles.

If you are looking for some great fantasy books, check out http://www.bestfantasybooks.com/. It's pretty much the best website you can go to get an idea about what fantasy books to read. The author has some really good fantasy book recommendation lists there.

Also, if you want to find the best science fiction books, check out http://www.bestfantasybooks.com/top10_sciencefiction.htm for a good idea.

I personally recommend George Martin's A Game of Thrones for one of the best fantasy books out there. And you can't go wrong with Fran Herbert's Dune as far as science fiction goes.

Hope that helps

Jeff

Try the Lord of the Rings series, you can't go wrong with that. You could also try the Silverwing trilogy by Kenneth Oppel:)

I remember reading Ender's game in grade 10 that was such a good book, but I would also suggest reading the Watch series (The Night Watch, The Day Watch, The Twilight Watch) its by Sergei Lukyanenko, the book was originally made in Russian so there are a couple translation mistakes but its a really good book.

I'm pretty sure that the original poster found his answer for book recommendations over a year ago. Please don't bump year old threads.
