I live next to a church, which i don't go to, but something i dislike are people that go door to door telling people about there religion, how wonderful, sometimes the crazy ones will even say: if you don't follow my words, then god will send you to hell. Now i dont mind a pleasant conversation, such as: "Hello sir/madden i would like to tell a bit about my personal beliefs in hope you will like them too, and will join me and my fellow believers" No thank you, i would like to stick to my current relegion, please have a nice days. but alot of them (or atleast that knock on my house) dotn leave you alone until you atleast try it or something, and thats what makes me mad, that they wont to push there beliefs down your throat. I respect your beliefs and all, but pleases don't try to force me in to your religion. Has anyone ever experienced such a thing?

Yeah. And before I start - I was raised religious, do believe in a Power greater than myself, and am fully sympathetic to nearly all beliefs I encounter (I am still iffy about Ragnarok). But I have had people jump me on the street asking "Do you think you're a good person?" straight off the bat. I simply tell them, "No, I've killed before" and they back off.

Hmm, I've had experiences with 'door-to-door' preachers, but nothing as negative in comparison to what you've experienced. In my area, they're (usually) fairly nice people that understand that you don't want to convert. The closest one has come to 'pressuring' me to convert was when he handed me a phamplet of information. Most of my conversations with them basically turn out like this.

*I open door*

"Hello, I'm here on behalf of the [Insert] Church. Would you like an information phamplet?"

"Thank you, but I'm already comfortable with my current religion."

"Okay sir, have a nice day."

"You too."

*I close door*

EDIT: I actually find Atheists trying to discredit religion much more annoying, since they tend to be incredibly arrogant and pompous to the extreme. I don't mind Atheists, but hardcore ones are even more snobby and elitist then fundamentalist theists.

now the bolded words I strongly disapprove of. But as a Christian myself I will say that most Christians witness to others because they love others and want you to find the same happiness that they have found. If you don't want to listen then you can respectfully say no. But then if they don't leave you alone, that is a problem I guess.

that depends on the person. some people are just really pushy. you cant expect everyone to share the gospel the same way. so blame the people, not the religion. thats what i say.

I wait for the bus downtown near my school, and I get all kinds of pamphlets passed to me telling me that I can go to heaven if I'll just join their church. I don't believe it's right by any means, and those who look at their religion that way are misguided for sure. It's not a person's job to indoctrinate someone as a nominal member of their religion, but for they themselves to live their religion so that they don't become just nominal "followers." You can't just join a religion as so many people believe ... and no matter how many people you get to also join your community, it's all too common for it all to amount to nothing.

What religion do you follow White_wolf_eye? I'm just curious. You have every right not to answer. If you're not a Christian, then that right there may be the reason you're harassed so often. I have noticed that street preachers tend to focus their attentions on those who follow a 'foreign' religion (as in not the standard North American Christian).

Without going too deeply into this, I would say Buddhism teaches you the importance of "right mind" and "right action" and how they reinforce one another. It deals more with how one handles daily situation rather than debating how the universal was created or if Buddha was real. Buddhism teaches you a living philosophy

I've encountered far too many pushy religious people in my time. I've learned to just deal with it respectfully and walk away. It's irritating though.

Like I said, atheists bash Christians a lot and try to convert them and say that God and Jesus are "mythology".

Thats why i dont actually say i AM Buddhist, because i dont know much about it, i still want to do a little research.

when they say "convert" its like there saying that you didnt have a religion until now. "Change" is a better word to use.

[QUOTE="White_wolf_eye"] Im sorry i forgot to place "i" between disapprove and something, it kinda changed the meaning of my post. sorry.White_wolf_eye

but you say you are Catholic, so at the moment you are sorta disapproving of your own religion?

I meant as an example: a jahabows witness(sorry if i spelled it wrong) trying to convert a catholic into one of them.

Jehovahs Witness.

If you don't want to listen then you can respectfully say no.J-man45
I can be a real jackass, so I'd probably just slam the door in their face.

No I haven't and I've had plenty of encounters with door to door and wandering recruiters. They are usually a polite bunch and if I'm too tired or busy to talk I just inform them that I'm really not interested in talking and they just leave me a piece of their literature and go off on their merry way. Sure there have been a few people who are a bit more experienced and view me as a challenge and thus want to talk a little more, but I've never had them get aggressive by any means. They're usually just people trying to spread their personal message and I don't have any ill will for them.

I don't mind if they're polite about it, but if they won't leave me alone then that's a problem.

I kinda know what you mean. I used to go to Bible Camp wayyy back whe I was like 11-13, and I used to believe, but not go to church really. But whenever I went to camp they basically do force it down your throat and try to trick you into becoming that religion and say that this is the only way to go with your life or you will end up in hell. I mean I respect it and everything, but I'd rather stick to my beliefs...

Because it WAS really fun, and I was too young to understand they were forcing us, I realized a few years after I went.

Some people just don't spread the message of Jesus in the right manner, I suppose.
