We should tax them on every dollar (other than those accounted directly going to charity costs).

[QUOTE="PrimordialMeme"][QUOTE="rimnet00"]Since when have churches made a profit? :|

Ever since they existed!
I should rephrase that to an economic profit.
You are confused. They make an economic profit, but you are equating their privately run business with a public corporation wherein profits are shared and fully disclosed. These people aren't taxed and get plates of cash and checks every weekend with no solid accounting of it, its a total racket.

Look no further than Telavangelists and the evangelical megachurches. They make GOOD money.

Really? I didn't know. I don't really know about those two categories to be completely honest. I'm thinking of traditional places of worship.
Thankfully, unlike you, our politicians in Washington at least have respect for religion, something that billions of people hold dear. That is why you will never be making public policy...intollerance and lack of respect. Just because you happen to believe churches and religion are a "racket" does not make it ok for you to impose that belief on the vast religious majority in this country. And by the way, since you people are always ranting and raving about this, taxing churches would be violation of separation between church and state in its purest form. It works both ways, kid.

You just contradicted yourself. Separation of Church and State was an ideal meant to keep religion out of policy making or politics. That means there shouldn't be any tax exemptions. Churches make money, more money than they need, and that is a profit the US government should be able to tax, just like any other business.

How about some proof to this major profit.

Exactly...it also means policy should not be made regarding churches, like tax policy. Separation of church and state is also to keep the churches free from the affairs of the state, but people often forget that part. Taxes are something that are instated as policy, therefore churches are left out of them. Argue whatever you want though.

Jerry Falwell.
I can't speak for other religions, but I know Catholocism goes by donations to the church. The priests live off barely any money at all, they have virtually no worldly possesions. Why take more away from them? (again, I'm only speaking of the Catholic Church)RiSkyBiZ-13
Isn't the Vatican state one of the richest countries in the world?
