Maybe because the guy was stabbing the man in a robotic manner? Maybe because any normal person who saw someone being stabbed would automatically think to run away from them, in an enclosed space?

How could they've helped him? His throat was cut and there was a big guy with a knife in between the kid and all the other people. Even if they would've somehow killed the big guy with the knife, there would've been very little chance for the kid who was at that point probably passed out and extremely close to death.

That's not how peoples minds work... If something extremely violent happens like that, you will be afraid, and you will automatically want to run. I doubt they'd be thinking of organising an attack to save him while he was being stabbed... the bus would have been thrown into a state of confusion and hysteria.
