What's so bad about having a civil unity between two individual for tax purposes?

Separation of church and state; defining marriage according to church standards for state purposes is redundant. America cannot act like we are preserving moral standards, morality has nothing to do with legislation.

I'm worried about the two girls living together, falling behind in bills, needing of a tax brake. They should be allowed to temporally "marry" which would allow them to receive tax brakes married couples receive.

Not exactly married with the whole wedding, but have a contract between the two. If two individuals live together, they should have the right to file taxes jointly.

This got nothing to do with morality or gay weddings. This is about why can't some people receive the same benefits as married people.

Yeah let's not worry about the two girls living together down on their luck. I don't know how we are getting involved in the relationship of others. Do you not care that married couples get tax brakes while an unmarried couple living together does not? I'm offering a different perspective. legal marriage should be redefined, it's not like America is holding any moral standards like conservatives claim.

what do you mean ghoklebutter? I said temporally because now a days people don't like to be married for a long period of time regardless of sexual orientation. US legal marriage shouldn't be permanent anymore because too many divorces. It would cause a lot more people to receive tax brakes, which i see as a good thing. What if I'm living with my best friend and we are both guys. And we been living in an apartment for like 5 years. Then the rent expense goes up. If we could file taxes jointly we may be able to afford the rent

Nevermind - I misread what you said. I take that back. Anyway, I don't see why it should be temporary because despite the high divorce rate, a decent number of marriages don't end in divorce. I do think your idea of extending to marriage to cohabiting groups of people is interesting, though.

that's cool but does it come with marriage benefits? I know you can live with someone for 30+ years and if one of them becomes sick, the other has no right to interfere with the sick person's health or life insurance, etc. As a married couple, the spouse can talk to the health insurance firm about confidential material of the sick spouse.

yeah just wanted to clarify i didn't say temporary because the example was about two girls living together. I think temporary marriage would give many people the opportunity to take advantage of marriage tax brakes. if you could be in a "marriage" for a numbers of years, then move to a new house and have a "marriage" with who ever lives there could cause a disaster if the current legal marriage allowed married couple to divorce easier, so many brake ups if it was simple as stopping a marriage contract like a phone contract.

This is what needs to heppen. Governement shouldn't hand out marriage certificates and instead use civil unions for tax purposes.

Maybe you are right this has nothing to do with marriage. I'm thinking of a tax brake for people that live with others in the same home. Two married people are a single entity when the IRS views their tax. If two college students are living together during the school semester, they should at least be allowed to file taxes for that time period as a single entity. not the best source but here is a little article on tax benefits married people received that should be allowed to any couple. these marriage tax brakes just don't apply properly to individuals. http://money.howstuffworks.com/personal-finance/personal-income-taxes/5-tax-benefits-of-marriage.htm#page=0
