Just noticed a couple months ago (maybe I'm slow to see this-heh) but it seems like in every commercial and most sitcoms, the wife is always in charge...

like, its the woman who is always right in commercials (I know why they do this- as most shoppers are indeed female), TV shows (everybody loves raymond, friends, George Lopez, Glen Martin DDS, king of queens), etcc...

i was just wondering what would happen if this was reversed, would women be up in arms about it?

but here is an interesting article about it.

I'm not complaining- just making an observation.

oh, and is it called "reverse sexism"? or just sexism when it comes to this kinda thing?

I don't think it's meant to be sexism, seeing as how the stars are male and without the man screwing up and the woman getting pissy, it wouldn't be perceived as funny.

Besides, the female actresses from those shows can't act nearly as comedic as the males.

I'm not so sure about commercials, though.

yeah, i guess sexist is the wrong word- just seems like TV/commercials try really hard to kiss a lot of female butt to sell a product :P

this article i saw on askmen.com is what made me notice that from commercials- not that i agree completely with this list b/c i think most of these ads are just funny and are not male bashing.

its just sexism.

i notice it. in the commercials the husband is always the idiot and treated like a child. and yes it's a double standard because if they mad a commercial with the housewife behaving in the same way it would be labeled "sexist" and petitioned against, etc. and the reason no one says anything is the same as on racial issues: everyone is to afraid to be labeled a "racist" a "sexist" etc, that we constantly walk around on eggshells now.

it doesn't bother me TOO much though as long as i don't think too much about it

It's the blame of comedy writers in general they do the same thing in stand-up comedy, I myself don't find it funny most of the time since it is very hackneyed.

Edit: I would also like to add that it isnt really sexism, it's just comedy, it's supposed to be warm and funny and it's supposed to like garner an "Oh, You!" response from people in general. It's just stupid and the mark of a hack comedian in today's time.

aye... it doesn't bother me too much either, but it does make me wonder how it affects kids (b/c i think we all know we were all very impressionable at a young age)...

does it give girls a sense of entitlement to treat boys like crap? does it make boys beat up on themselves cuz they see it as the "norm" to be treated badly by the opposite sex? who knows..?

of course it does, hell look at most girls now, you should BE so lucky as to hear what they think and don't make them mad cause they'll beat your ass and you won't do **** cause you're a little ***** (and has nothing to do with the fact that you can't hit them back).

i was unfortunate enough to stop on mtv the other night and there was this reality show where a guy was getting his stuff out of his ex's place and she was punching him in the face, slapping and kicking him, the whole time begging him to hit her back. the guy just stood there like a kid in time out asking "are you done?" and i was like if this was the other way around the camera crew would have beat his ass/called the cops. then after it was over there was a "if you know anyone who's a victim of domestic violence call......" thing, and i was like "wtf?"

men aren't insecure sensitivecry babies. At least we are not supposed to be. PLUS a large fraction of shoppers as well as a large fraction of the viewing audience are woman. Soooo.

Sexism get's me in a different way. It hurts me when women look me up and down with a giddysmilelike they have found a brand new toy. It hurts me when women play with my muscles buns and male fitting like they idiolize me but then when they are not horny anymorethey treat me like a child in condescending manner.

I guess women are called momma for a reason. I guess they see all men as children. AND that's why women need help, they're sick. Having sex with children. Sure we may be 25-30-40 years old but they think of as children so that is just perverted.

Furthermore they expect us to doall of the hardwork. Work that requires engineering & technical skills. They know nothing of carpentry, plumbing or electrical. BUT they have the nerve to criticize when their is a flood, something explodes due to acircuit overload or the house falls down due to a crooked strut or two. Well if they are the experts why don't they do it.

It's all about demographics. Since women are seen as the big spenders, they're all smart, sassy and in the know. Hubby and kids are savages who only put their shoes on the correct feet through mom's patient guidance. As soon as men are deemed to be more profitable (don't hold your breath), the exact same thing will be happening in reverse. It's all just about the bottom line.

Sexism against males can be kind of frustrating. When I was working at a grocery store before, it was pretty obvious. My boss only hired guys to be stock boys, whereas girls were cashiers and deli, both of which paid more and were easier jobs.

I noticed this in OT as well. I don't quite remember the subject matter of the thread, but the vast majority where against having to pay for the woman when on a date and other such things and a few wisecracks decided that the woman was supposed to deserve both equality and great chivalry (the latter negating the former), saying that the guy should pay for the dates and what not. I just found it immensely funny as they even dared to insult the guys that don't want to pay for a woman when on a date (even when the woman earned more) and constantly proclaimed that chivalry is dead and the like.

It's just sexism. I think David Mitchell said it the best in that males are quite happy to let 'man flu' and 'men are idiots' pass as they don't mention the true facts that most rapists and violent criminals are men.

you are taking what i said completely out of context...

i never said that the world, or this country was sexist against men... i was simply talking about commercials and sitcoms... wasn't even a complaint, just an observation...

the world in general still has more men in power than women, i think we can all agree on that...

It seems like every show where there is some savant who figures everything out while all of the other people just stand around and mostly look ridiculously incompetent at everything, the savant is a male, so no, I don't see this at all. I don't really watch much in the way of sitcoms these days though.

Anyway, it would just be "sexism". Calling stuff "reverse sexism" or "reverse racism" ironically sounds sexist or racist, since it implies that the other way is somehow how it is supposed to be, unless perhaps you are talking about people discriminating against themselves. I'd still avoid using it even in that case though.

One of the most interesting articles I ever read. From my observations women have a disproportional advantage in the social world whereas men have the advantage in the business/career world. While men have a better chance to live out their dreams, women dominate in relationships and families. It makes me question whether the concept of marriage and family structure are on the verge of extinction as we know it.

There's no such thing as reverse sexism. Sexism is sexism. You're pretty much encouraging double standards by saying that.

I agree to an extent. But if you noticed in all the sitcomsthat all the husbands are average looking and the women are very pretty, that isn't very fair to say the least.

It is impossible for someoned to be "-ismed" against unless they are a victim group: Women, colored people, old people, the handicapped, aliens. Men are not a victim group, so they cannot be -ismed unless they are part of some other victim group.

Every guy who's ever been told to put the toilet seat down is a victim of reverse sexism. If women really wanted equal rights, they would be OK with everyone moving the toilet seat themselves when it's not in the needed position.

Because your sig is awesome. But anyway, the decline of men in pop culture is partially due to outside forces, but is also due to the fact that a lot of men nowadays just don't live up to the standard anymore. I knew this one individual who worked from his home, and gave himself a lot of free time, while his wife worked two jobs AND took care of the kids because he couldn't be bothered. Pretty pathetic.

There is no such thing as "reverse sexism". Sexism applies to both genders. The same applies to race and racism. There is no such thing as "reverse racism".

Men can be sexist. Women can be sexist.

Europeans (Whites) can be racist. Africans (Blacks) can be racist. Asians can be racist. Hispanics can be racist. Native Americans can be racist. Anybody can be racist.

Let's take two examples.

1. Man slaps his wife. Police are called, husband is arrested and jailed, wife gets free counseling and money from husband after divorce.

2. Women slaps her husband... So? Who cares?

Correct. It's impossible.

EDIT:

Back to reality:

Let's take two examples.

1. Man slaps his wife. Police are called, husband is arrested and jailed, wife gets free counseling and money from husband after divorce.

2. Women slaps her husband... So? Who cares?

Dtnoip28

I dunno why it's okay for women to slap men. When I say "okay," I mean it's shown all the time in film and on television. A long time ago, women weren't allowed to learn how to fight. That's not the case anymore. Women can join the armed forces, take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and work out. The assumption that any woman is physically a non-threat to any man is absurd and sexist. (And back to sarcasm) it's so sexist that my progressive brain makes me cry in my martini, and I vow revenge by handing out flyers on campus the next day.

I don't mind, it just makes it easier to understand the main character when he screws some. It's also just an archetype in sitcoms. (Idiot dad, smart mom, annoying teenage daughter, loser son, etc.)

Men are more powerful than women. So a slap is never just a slap, it usually ends up in a full-fledged beating. Whereas the wife can only do so much, unless she gets the money maker ;)

Women go to jail all the time for domestic abuse, I hear of it all the time and see it all the time.

Women are always played as angry characters on TV, men may be stupid on TV but they aren't like that in real life, theres lots of shows where women are stupid.
