Yeah it's just typical mob mentality which people fall prey to all too easily especially during the modern era with all the pressures it brings. The sad part is that it's become so routine all around the world that I have to wonder if there's really any kind of reasonable solution to the problem.

Yeah, sports can be a bit... stupid. Believe me, I understand the love people have for them. Movies are a way of life for me, and sports are a way of life for others. Would I riot over movies, though? No. Is it much more likely for people to overreact to sports? Yes.

I think it's that they have very little personality outside of being a "sports fan". They have invested so much of themselves (time, identity, money, testosterone, memory, ect.) in sports that when something happens to excite/dissappoint, they go nuts. It's their lives. They ARE the Lakers, or the Jets, or the Yankees. Maybe if they had kniting or a book club or decoupage, they wouldn't riot.
I can't believe people care so much about a sport they don't play and cannot play that they'd ruin others property and drive around in their cars screaming and honking their horns.
The NBA should forbid the lakers from participating in championships anymore since their fans have proven they cannot take a win and just be happy.

I remember when there was a riot at my school after the White Sox won the world series. It really looked like a tornado had ripped through campus. In what way does destroying property display your affection for a sports team exactly?

Chicago citizens really take a lot of the fun out of the school. P.S. the White Sox riot was nothing in comparison to the Halloween riots we used to have, which was mostly locals.

EDIT: Actually none of places I have lived have rioted after a championship. Unless there were Red Wings riots I am unaware of. In my home country the soccer fans are just hooligans but that's a worldwide problem. I was at a Sparta Prague home game when they won the league and... "Please don't go on the field at the end" say the announcers. What happens as soon as the game is over and the championship is won? Storm the field anyway so at some point I was like well since nobody gives a damn anymore I will too.
It's herd behavior. When a person is in a herd, he's less intelligent than when he is alone and only listens to his emotions. So the OP does have a point, people who fight over sports are idiots.
