Does anybody agree that all the talent, emotion and quality of music has been on the decline since the 1980-1990's?

Overall music isn't dying but, mainstream is utter crap. Prime Examples: Slipknot, Disturbed, Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, *insert mainstream rap and hip hop artists here*

Slipknot never really made it to the radio so they ain't mainstream. They do suck tho. Disturbed is a great band. And there's alot of mainstream music out there that's good. I listen to rap rock and country and there's stuff out right now in all genres I like.

They are both mainstream and I'd like to flip things and give Slipknot the nod while kicking Disturbed in the teeth

No. You can only kick one band in the teeth. You can only kick the other one in the mask.

Not if you're open-minded. There's a lot of crap being released, but that's nothing new. Dig a little, there's bound to be something you like, even if it's not mainstream friendly.

Nifty_Shark

So are you saying that I have to move on regardless of if I like that type of music or not? Thats why theres a decline, general society just "moves on through" music without saying what they think of musicand everyone just accepts it.

Also, everyone is just saying that I gotta "look in the right places". Thats what im saying is that when you have to look that hard to find decent music, somethings wrong.

That's the thing: you don't need to look that hard to find decent music. Just turn off the radio and check out last.fm for some recommendations of bands that you might actually like.

What I mean by "move on" is just a general thing. You know how there are people who love their Boston, Journey and such? Well they are left in the dust when it comes to that type of music today. So by "move on" I mean you can't expect a specific sound to be around for very long. If you want to keep enjoying music that is released to day you can't get lost in the past and just wish it would last forever.

Just look at your parents. Chances are they don't care for music today. In most cases they just halt at some decade and everything after means nothing to them.

I'm confused. Is Phil Collins supposed to be good or bad? I dig his stuff but when people talk about him it's very black and white.

In the mainstream, certainly, but there are lots of gems if you look hard enough.

Of course something wrong, but it deals with how the music industry is run these days. They gobble up young, appealing kids...market them up the yin-yang, give them songs to sing along to, and milk them for money until they dry up. The acts they throw away never had any potential to rise on their own, so there's no loss in letting them go, because they still own the song rights and can release greatest hits albums a few years down the road to capitalize on nostalgia. Same spiel for mainstream rock bands, except you just modify the formula and approach a little bit. If the RIAA didn't have such a stranglehold on all commercialized media, the field would be more open like it was way back in the day, but it's not like that anymore. It's harder to find bands the big labels aren't explicitly pushing, and it sucks because people tend to think that having to scour around to find them means they're not good enough to rise to the top on their own(when the real reason is that it's proven that creativity is expensive to keep a hold on and give orders to regarding songwriting and track selections).

Phil Collins is good, he re-invented Genesis and released many hits both in the band and by himself.

BTNH did a Hip-hop cover of one of his songs "Home" which was pretty bad but it was funny to see Phil Collins himself boppin along in the vid.

I feel rather alienated from this current music scene. But I think that's more of an issue of not being exposed to it as much, rather than just an overall decline in the quality of the said popular music.

As times change, new generations are born, people's tastes in music change I guess. Our (for the most part) generation most likely just prefer the older artists.

Not all mainstream is horrible. Sure most of it is that garbage hip hop or generic pop artists, but there are some great mainstream bands. The Killers, Muse, Kings of Leon, Pearl Jam,etc...

Searching through mainstream music looking for something audible is like searching through faeces looking for something edible.

Is the fruit of either search worth what's endured in the process?
